Greg,
Did Steve or Butch write all those Nirvana songs? Guess I missed it if he did. Good producers are supposed to improve a band’s sound for album – but that doesn’t take away from the band itself, unless the band doesn’t play its own instruments or write its own songs. Saying Butch and Steve did a great job of producing Nirvana as a diss on Nirvana reflects ignorance of almost all of rock ‘n roll. See Eno (u2) or Martin (Beatles) for easy examples. I like Pearl Jam too….
All you naysayers have never heard Pearl Jam live. Yes Nirvana is great, agreed. Pearl Jam is an amazing band, both live and in the studio, they might just be the last great american rock band. As for everything sounding “hookless” after Yield, listen to Binaural (the album after yield) with the volume up or with headphones, its truly a great album.
at the end of the day, nickleback is not gonna be in the rock n roll hall of fame, and guess who’s there? Pearl Jam!!
you can’t decide who is a better band, nirvana or pearl jam b/c it is a musical preference. It just depends on what you like. I personally like nirvana better because to me, nirvana sound more like the wierd punk/alt bands that inspired them. Pearl Jam is great in their own right, all talented musicians who have more of a classic rock sound. As for the originators of grunge, it can’t be green river. The members of Green River even admitted they ripped of blag flag, black sabbath and many other acts and said that they should be given credit. Nirvana copied off of the pixies, meat puppets, black flag, the vaselines, wipers and created a very marketable sound. As for nickelback i think they are just posers, it seems they care nothing about the actual music as nirvana and pearl jam did and i have yet to hear an original sounding nickelback tune.

Pearl Jam and Nirvana serve two distinct purposes. One brings you up and the other brings you down. Which one you want is up to you.
