Green Day: Back in Black (Eyeliner, that is)

Tags: , News

Greenday_lNearly five years after the release of their 2004 blockbuster American Idiot—it sold some 12 million copies worldwide, and yielded five singles—the boys from Berkeley return this spring with their eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown (not including, lest we forget, a little 2007 side project). And now we have an official release date! It’s May 15, though you can get lead single “Know Your Enemy” digitally sooner, on a soon-to-be-announced day in April.

A few EW staffers were given a sneak peak last month (you can read about it here), and basically, it’s not a huge departure for the band. Fans of Idiot will appreciate the trio’s continued three-chord raging-against-the-machine and rock-opera flourishes, like dividing the album into three parts: “Heroes and Cons,” “Charlatans and Saints,” and “Horseshoes and Handgrenades.”

As we’ve reported, they’re not the only returning late ’90s/early ’00s pop-punk icons returning this year (see No Doubt, Blink 182, et al). Which one has you feeling most pogo-y in your old Dickies, readers?

Definetly looking forward to Blink 182′s reunion more than this new album. Never was a huge Green Day fan, and they became too radio friendly but try so hard to look like bad asses.

Remember when Stone Temple Pilots were Nirvana lite, and Bush was Nirvana zero, and you thought to yourself, how much lamer could “punk” get, and then Green Day came along and made Bush look like the freakin’ Sex Pistols by comparison… I feel sorry for kids today, with this suckage as the best they can hope for.

I’m freaking tired of people comparing Green Day to Blink. Its dumb because the bands do not stack up to each other. Blink is a joke band. You go out of your way to find a blog about Green Day and you try to make Blink sound way better than they are while trying to discredit Green Day, even though Green Day has had way more success. Blink was only in and out for a couple of years and to boot they put on a horrible live show.I can say this because i’ve seen them both Blink and Green Day live. Green Day played for over two hours and I don’t think Blink even filled up an hour. Oh and whats up with Blink not giving any encores? At sixty bucks a ticket I expect an encore. Oh and that “DollaBill” tour was probably just Blink feeling sorry they ripped their fans off. At least with Green Day I get what i’m paying for. Lets see whos new album will be bigger with less filler. If you don’t believe me compare the amount of MTV Awards, Grammy’s, AMA’s each band took home. ‘Nuff said.

seriously, Bink is and was a teenybooper band. Cute n stuff, but pretty lite. Green Day is awesome rockin.

Tamburlaine, I wanted to say that that I’m a product of the 90′s and kinda like the bands you mentioned as lame but oddly, as I laughed about “Bush like Sex Pistols”, I realized that I agree with you. As the 90′s evolved these bands turned soft and mushy and not fun! Now the “suckage” part i think is a little harsh. “the times they are changing” man…

so please don’t mention blink in the same breath as those bands, especially green day, who honestly have like 30 singles by now, most of them strong-to-classic.

I hated Green Day up until American Idiot came out which was, in my opinion, the best album of the year. So I am hoping that this one will be just as good.
