Justin Timberlake exclusive: The singer on his new album (or lack thereof) and current iPod favorites

Justintimberlake_lJustin Timberlake fans, don’t hold your breath waiting for a new album. Timberlake, whose last disc, FutureSex/LoveSounds, came out in 2006, tells EW that he’s "not working" on new music right now. The singer — who’s executive producing a new MTV reality competition series called The Phone (premiering April 21) — has been hitting the studio lately, but only to produce tracks for other artists, like T.I. ("Dead and Gone") and Ciara ("Love Sex Magic"). "Right now, I like the idea that things can just kind of pop up and if they feel right I can do them," says Timberlake. "Committing to my own sort of project, that’s like, ‘Okay, let me block out two years of my life and do it.’ I was heavily fulfilled with the last one and I always have this thing with myself that if I can’t sleep because I need to do it, then I’m gonna do it. But if I’m not losing sleep over it then…"

When he does finally get to work on his new disc, what might it sound like? Timberlake isn’t saying, but if his current iPod listening is any indication, it might have more of a rock sound. "I mean, I listen to everything," he says. "I’ve been going back and forth between Kings of Leon’s latest album and the Black Keys. I really love their Attack and Release. I thought that was a really great record. And of course Radiohead. It’s a constant. I enjoy In Rainbows in the morning. You throw it on in the iPod dock and get ready to leave the house and go on about your day. That album seems to put me in a pretty decent mood."

What do you think, Music Mixers? Should JT get back into the studio, already? And would you be into hearing a Timberlake rock album?

Hey why would he make an album now? When he can make video love to beautiful chocolate women then fly home to snow board with his gorgeous vanilla girlfriend? Luckiest. Man. Alive.

The Beatles used to put out two records a year, and Justin takes five years for one. Really, that’s pretty easy to explain: Justin isn’t a songwriter, he’s a producer. Or I suppose it could mean he’s ten times better than the Beatles.

Justins the type of guy that could get the itch tomorrow and start working on his next album. I’m expecting one next year from him.

AMANDA BURNETT – So despite the fact that Edward and I have still never made it onto the blog :sigh: I keep lokoing over all the new pictures over and over! Justin went four years inbetween his first and second albums so I expect too next year some time we’ll get an album. I think he should release an album like he does his live shows. He always turns his R&B songs into R&B with heavy guitars sounding more like a combo of the two. He needs to do an album like that.

Um, so whose songs are those I keep finding? Or were those scrapped ones that got leaked?

Ok. So here I am thinking I’m such the hipster, but JT is listening to literally the same cds as I am. My world is crushed! Actually, I’m pretty jazzed that he listens to good music.

Take his sweet time if he needs too as long as he does some other stuff to occupy us in the meantime. I mean, no rush if the itch has struck and I’ll always take quality JT over quantity JT. I’m glad he’s taking his time.

Why are all these no talent ass clowns throwing down love for Radiohead? Bizarro! Justin is a huge tool. He’s a year or two away from county fair circuit. His occassional role on SNL or celebrity golf tournament is all the evidence you need. Jonas Brother have destroyed him!

In Rainbows puts him in a good mood in the morning? I always thought that album was really depressing…
To each their own, I guess :)

Although I crave new JT material, I have no doubt that he’ll scratch that itch soon enough. Until then he can make occasional, hilarious appearances on SNL to keep me happy.

Yep, I agree next year justin will release another album. On the plus side he’ll be hosting SNL again on May 9th. Rumor is ciara will be the performer and they will do Love Sex Magic. He’s diffinitely been confirmed though by Bill Hader. Seth Rogan, Zac Efron, justin, and Will Farrell will be the last four hosts for the season.

Radiohead’s In Rainbows puts him in a good mood? Talk about poseur.

Timberlake knows everything about pretty much every genre of music. He’s always been a lover of rock. This guy though knows more about music then guys that have been in the business alot longer then him. People in the business are always amazed by him and his knowlege of music when they meet him. Can’t wait for his appearance on SNL.

  • laura

I trust Justin’s talent and will be excited to listen to anything he does. Can’t wait for his next musical venture. I just ask that he stay true to himself.

  • Laurie

I am really ready for another J.T. album. I hear him with all these other artists and he’s so great I just want to hear HIM again!
