Today’s been a rough one, readers (you know how Garfield feels about Mondays? That’s me right now). It’s the kind of day, in fact, that makes me crave the sweet release of no-bullsheet garage-rock fuzzbombs like the Mannequin Men.
The Chicago foursome’s love for the Replacements is all over their MySpace page, but in their fast-and-loose playing and shambolic, shouty vocals, I’m hearing something messier: maybe onetime tourmates the Black Lips. Also, some classic sloppy Stooges vibes, and, naturally, the Pixies (predictable, c’est moi). They’ve got a new record due this summer on Flameshovel, but in the meantime, please enjoy this low-quality but very satisfying blast; my brain feels cleaner already:
