Nothing says summer like bands on the road, and 2009 is shaping up to pretty stellar in that department. If anything makes me want to get Midwestern-roadtrip-sweaty, it’s the lineup for this year’s Pitchfork Festival, happening July 17-19 in Chicago’s Union Park—and now confirmed to be closing out three days of indie excellence with the Flaming Lips.
Honestly, they had me at Friday’s “Built to Spill plays a by-request setlist,” but now they’ve announced the Lips on Sunday night, as well as Yo La Tengo, Tortoise, the Jesus Lizard, Grizzly Bear, and the Walkmen, plus young buzz bands like the Vivian Girls and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Long-running prog-thrash outfit Tool, meanwhile, has just announced a headlining gig at Denver’s Mile High Festival (July 18-19), where they will undoubtedly be the burliest band on a bill that also includes Widespread Panic, the Fray, Ben Harper and Ani DiFranco. The full lineup and ticket info for Pfork is available at here, and Tool says you’ll be able to find full summer dates soon on their website. so tell me, Mixers, what’s on your request setlist for BtS, the Lips, Tengo, and the rest? Are you dreaming of Denver? And who wants to rent a van with me? Tinted windows!UPDATE (by request): The lineup for Bonnaroo, June 11-14 in Manchester, Tennessee, also looks pretty stellar: Bruce Springsteen, Phish, the Beastie Boys, NIN, Wilco, and Public Enemy, just to start, plus a heavy load of comedy, including Jimmy Fallon, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, and “An Evening with The Daily Show.

you made me really sad

I actually thought that radiohead, kanye, etc were playing this year, but if you look on the website, that’s last year’s lineup. I thought it looked kinda familiar
…and not a single word about Bonnaroo??
NIN, Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, Public Enemy, Phish…. its got something for eveybody
Pitchfork updates listing, Flaming Lips will not be playing requests.
“The Flaming Lips will not be part of the “Write the Night” series, as was previously reported. We apologize for any confusion. Any problems regarding tickets purchased due to what was previously reported can be addressed with TicketWeb for reimbursement at info@ticketweb.com. The incorrect story reported earlier today is after the jump. Thanks, and we hope to see you in July.”

WTF?
Great article. I can¡¯t wait to hear more about your research tool. If it is as good as your other products, then you will have another winner. Your article pretty much summed up what I have been seeing too. Great to see some hard data.
