The Grateful Dead have certainly done some odd TV appearances (check out this 1969 clip with Hugh Hefner on Playboy After Dark), but this morning’s drop-by on The View had the makings of a particularly bizarre encounter. Would Elizabeth Hasselbeck hurl anti-drug invective at the famously substance-friendly troupe? Would today’s main guest, Bill O’Reilly, get all red and furious about those dirty hippies and their destruction of society’s moral fabric over the past 40-plus years? Well…no. Things started off a little strange when, after a supremely cheesy voice over intro ("You’re not having a flashback, man…"), Whoopi unexpectedly proclaimed that "I love me some Dead!" But otherwise this seemed like a pretty typical music-guest affair. The band (now officially known as the Dead) didn’t interact with O’Reilly or Hasselbeck at all, instead answering a few standard questions from Whoopi and Joy Behar, then launching into a muted version of "Friend of the Devil" (below) with Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Warren Haynes trading verses in place of Jerry Garcia. The somewhat uneven vocal performance (which has always been part of the band’s charm) probably wasn’t the greatest super-mainstream showcase of the band’s still-vital onstage chops, but it’s nice to see them getting some big-time attention even after Garcia’s death has made them a strictly for-the-faithful proposition. Meanwhile, the Dead’s spring tour kicks off April 12 in North Carolina.

I was at work, passed by a TV and thought I was hallucinating. The End of the World As We Know It…….The Dead on the View….
Dear Bob and Phil: Was The Bonnie Hunt Show and Ellen booked?
So What?! In this youth-obsessed culture, they are lucky to get invited!
I still love these guys, and the “faithful” are apparently still out there as their spring tour is doing big business (although I’m passing because the near $100 tickets are a big turn-off). But c’mon… THE VIEW?? Ugh. They should’ve at least mocked O’Lielly.
I’m going to see The Dead when they play in Colorado in May…and I can’t wait! $100 for a ticket is nothing when parents are shelling out thousands for Hannah Montana and the like. The old and the faithful are still around and very excited to see them all play together. Go Dead!
Unbelievable Jerry is rolling over in his grave. I love The Dead but come on what is next they are gonna play for Obama( oh wait they did that too)
Ahhh the good ole days when The Dead didn’t care if the Politicians or TV shows on the main stream media didn’t like them hell do you think Jerry would ever let them charge a $100 for a ticket. All you deadheads that always talked trash about PHISH well guess what it $49.50 to see them and all their members are still alive. Now The Dead are playing Inaugural Balls. Ahhh those good ole’ days when hippies hated the government and now they are best friends. Now I have seen everything.
