T.I.'s prison sentence: Did he get a cushy deal?

Categories: T.I.

Ti_lOne thing is now certain: T.I. is going to prison. A federal judge today approved a negotiated plea for one year plus a day in federal prison for trying to buy machine guns and ammo from undercover agents in 2007. As part of the deal, the rapper was also sentenced to 1,500 hours of community service, a $100,000 fine, and one year of home confinement (much of which he has already served). T.I. could reduce his time behind bars to about 10 months with good behavior. He is scheduled to voluntarily report to prison some time afterMay 19.

But is he getting off too easy? Given that federal sentencing guidelines recommend that a person who pleads guilty to these charges should serve four years and nine months in prison, some Atlanta defense attorneys have suggested that the megastar was able to use his celebrity to reduce the punishment. "This has been an unusual plea from the very beginning," says Page Pate, a criminal defense attorney with the Atlanta firm Pate & Brody and former chairman of the Criminal Law Section of the Atlanta Bar Association. "But they [apparently] felt he was in the unique position because of the things he could dowith his celebrity that other people couldn’t do. Is it right or wrong? I won’tget into that. But is it fair? No. Joe Smith isn’t going to get this deal."

But David E. Nahmias, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, who approved the deal, tells EW he believes the good that will come out of T.I.’s assigned community service — 1,030 hours of which he has already served — is more important than time tacked onto his sentence. Over the past year, T.I. has made 262 appearances speaking to thousands of kids about crime, drugs, and gangs (his MTV reality show did not count towards his community service requirement, though Nahmias says his office viewed it as "a good thing"), and he has another 470 hours of service to go once he is released. Nahmias says though there is no way to measure the impact those appearances might have on preventing crime, T.I. has shown he has the ability to reach a demographic that isn’t always willing to listen to adults telling them what’s right and wrong. "We didn’t do this to benefit him," Nahmias says. "He’s the defendant. If it winds up making him a better person, that’s a nice side effect. But we did this to benefit [the community]. He’s in the unique position as a celebrity with the communication skills and the life story that is powerful when he talks to kids."

So what do you think? Is it worth granting a convicted celebrity like T.I. some leniency if it can wind up benefiting the greater good? Or should he do the same time as anyone else?

American Idol's Motown Recordings, Judged

Categories: American Idol, Motown

Idoltop9_lAs part of the celebration of American Idol‘s Motown Week, the legendary label has—for the first time!—opened its vaults and allowed outsiders to sing over the original Motown studio tracks. For contestants, this is both good and bad. On one hand, there’s no risk that a singer will be dragged down by a middling arrangement. On the other…no excuses! And while a singer covering this material will always suffer next to giants like Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, and Stevie Wonder, those comparisons are heightened when their voices are surrounded by the very drum fills, finger snaps, and guitar obligattos that are on the original hit records. So how did they do? Here’s a rundown of all the tracks, which you can hear and purchase right now on iTunes

Caveat: I’m not an American Idol watcher, so I haven’t had the opportunity to be charmed by the contestants’ winning personalities. And because they have a Mission: Impossible kind of task here, they’ll be graded on a curve.

1. Adam Lambert, "The Tracks of My Tears"
"People say I’m the life of the party" is the opening line, but Lambert is moaning before the song even starts. Smokey Robinson’s vocal had a little ambiguity, a little buoyancy (listen to the hint of the smiling embouchure when he sings the word "joke"). At no time in this song does Adam sound like he’s attended any party; you will not need to take a good look at his face. Still: pleasant enough, and emotionally dedicated without going overboard. B+

2. Allison Iraheta, "Papa Was A Rolling Stone"
Sung by a lady, so gone are the Freudian overtones in the tribute to mom-loving and dad-hating. And because it’s the Temptations on backup vocals, Iraheta gets to actually sing with the marquee names! Sassy and bluesy inflections, so I suspect that she owns Bonnie Raitt records. B

3. Anoop Desai, "Ooo Baby Baby"
Falsettos are kind of like whispers — everyone sounds a little bit more alike. Which means that Desai sounds a little more like Smokey Robinson, and the narcotic arrangement means that he gets a major assist from the Miracles, who envelop his lead with a cozy gauze. A-

4. Danny Gokey, "Get Ready"
He’s going for that Michael Bolton thing, I guess? At 1:04 you can hear him spitting on the microphone. I don’t recall that being one of Eddie Kendricks’ tricks. C-

5. Kris Allen, "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)"
What a great arrangement this is, with those buttery female vocals! Allen’s ad-libs are bizarre, although I like the weird la-la-las at the two-minute mark, right before he sounds like he’s getting angry and freaks me out a little bit. He’s putting in a lot more effort than James Taylor did. But sometimes effortlessness has its advantages. B-

6. Lil Rounds, "Heatwave"
Martha Reeves had one of the most powerful voices of all Motown singers, so much respect to Ms. Rounds. The second verse soars! If this song didn’t already exist in perfect form, I would listen to this. A

7. Matt Giraud, "Let’s Get It On"
The "Unforgettable"-ish singing-with-the-voices-of-the-past finally gets super-creepy, when he and Marvin Gaye trade "my body wants you"s. There’s a picture of Matt that pops up on my iTunes, but thankfully no Marvin Gaye hologram. C

8. Megan Joy, "For Once In My Life"
She sounds like Nelly Furtado on a bender. Stevie Wonder’s harmonica solo is intact, which gives us a too-brief respite. D+

9. Scott MacIntyre, "You Can’t Hurry Love"
Bizarrely, whoever mixed this put the backing vocals much further up in the mix than they are in the original, which lends a heretofore unrealized "traffic jam" effect to the song. Quality-wise, MacIntyre’s rendition falls somewhere between Phil Collins’ take recorded in 1982, and Kenneth the Page’s version, which only exists in my mind. It’s closer, alas, to the latter. D

What do you think of these new Motown tracks? Did the Idol hopefuls do them justice?

Flaming Lips, Tool confirmed for summer fests

Flaminglips_lNothing says summer like bands on the road, and 2009 is shaping up to pretty stellar in that department. If anything makes me want to get Midwestern-roadtrip-sweaty, it’s the lineup for this year’s Pitchfork Festival, happening July 17-19 in Chicago’s Union Park—and now confirmed to be closing out three days of indie excellence with the Flaming Lips.

Honestly, they had me at Friday’s “Built to Spill plays a by-request setlist,” but now they’ve announced the Lips on Sunday night, as well as Yo La Tengo, Tortoise, the Jesus Lizard, Grizzly Bear, and the Walkmen, plus young buzz bands like the Vivian Girls and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Long-running prog-thrash outfit Tool, meanwhile, has just announced a headlining gig at Denver’s Mile High Festival (July 18-19), where they will undoubtedly be the burliest band on a bill that also includes Widespread Panic, the Fray, Ben Harper and Ani DiFranco. The full lineup and ticket info for Pfork is available at here, and Tool says you’ll be able to find full summer dates soon on their website. so tell me, Mixers, what’s on your request setlist for BtS, the Lips, Tengo, and the rest? Are you dreaming of Denver? And who wants to rent a van with me? Tinted windows!UPDATE (by request): The lineup for Bonnaroo, June 11-14 in Manchester, Tennessee, also looks pretty stellar: Bruce Springsteen, Phish, the Beastie Boys, NIN, Wilco, and Public Enemy, just to start, plus a heavy load of comedy, including Jimmy Fallon, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, and “An Evening with The Daily Show.

'Iron Man' exclusive! Watch Rooney's clip for their new Tony Stark theme song

Categories: An EW Exclusive!

We’ve always said there are a lot of similarities between LA rockers Rooney and metal-clad superhero Iron Man. Okay we’ve never said that. But that hasn’t stopped the band from recording a track called "Iron Man: Armored Adventures Theme Song." The number, appropriately enough, actually is the theme song for a new animated show called Iron Man: Armored Adventures that debuts April 24 on the Nicktoons Network. And we’ve got our hands on the accompanying video! The clip features both Rooney and Tony Stark’s alter ego. Check it out and tell us what you think.

The Hold Steady's concert DVD: An exclusive full-song preview

On April 7th, The Hold Steady (aka my favorite band of the last five years) will be releasing their first live DVD/CD, A Positive Rage, and we’ve got the exclusive full-song premiere here on the Music Mix. Combining documentary and concert footage from 2006 gigs in London and Minneapolis, Rage is sure to be a handy conversion tool for anyone bent upon spreading the gospel of Craig Finn’s madly poetical antics to those in need. But that’s enough from me — like the man says to his hometown crowd in "Stuck Between Stations," below, "words won’t save your life." The Hold Steady, on the other hand, just might. Stay positive!

What's the most heartbreaking song of all time?

Categories:

Heartbreaksongs_lOn the heels of the news today that our friends at Blender were shutting their doors, my pal Amanda, who was more than a little saddened by it, said that she’d turned to her iTunes in this time of need, and sent me an email asking me if I’d ever heard the song “Poke” by Frightened Rabbit. “Nope. Why?” She said it is the “most brutal” heartbreaking song of all time. She sent it over, and I listened. It’s sad for sure (if a bit weird: “And now we’re unrelated and rid of all the s— we hated/But I hate when I feel like this and I never hated you” — sad and creepy and mean but still sad!).

For my money, though — and I won’t get into specifics as to why, but no, it doesn’t have anything to do with it being on the High Fidelity soundtrack, thank you — it’s gotta be Smog’s “Cold Blooded Old Times.” Sample gut-punching lyric: “Though how can I stand/And laugh with the man/Who redefined your body?” Now whose rabbit is frightened, Amanda?!

Take a listen for yourself — and if this isn’t the most heartbreaking song of all time, Music Mix friends, then what is? (My colleague Leah Greenblatt insists it is either Love’s “Always See Your Face,” Spiritualized’s “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space,” or Elliott Smith’s entire catalog, but especially “A Fond Farewell.”)

New Band Alert: Mannequin Men

Categories: New Stuff

Today’s been a rough one, readers (you know how Garfield feels about Mondays? That’s me right now). It’s the kind of day, in fact, that makes me crave the sweet release of no-bullsheet garage-rock fuzzbombs like the Mannequin Men.

The Chicago foursome’s love for the Replacements is all over their MySpace page, but in their fast-and-loose playing and shambolic, shouty vocals, I’m hearing something messier: maybe onetime tourmates the Black Lips. Also, some classic sloppy Stooges vibes, and, naturally, the Pixies (predictable, c’est moi). They’ve got a new record due this summer on Flameshovel, but in the meantime, please enjoy this low-quality but very satisfying blast; my brain feels cleaner already:

Kanye, Santigold, and Lykke Li in the new N.A.S.A. video: I can't stop watching

Kanye West, Santigold, and Lykke Li made three of my favorite songs of last year: "Heartless," "L.E.S. Artistes", and "I’m Good, I’m Gone." So when I say "Gifted," a track the trio recorded together on the recent N.A.S.A. album The Spirit of Apollo, is a dream-team collaboration, I mean it — in a butterflies-in-the-stomach, having-trouble breathing kind of way. Naturally, the hyperactive synth-based track does not disappoint. And while the brand-new animated video sadly doesn’t feature any of them in the flesh, it fits within the N.A.S.A project’s collaborative nature. (N.A.S.A. is comprised of dozens of DJ’s in both North and South America.) Five years in the making, Spirit of the Apollo also features Tom Waits, Karen O, Method Man, and a posthumous appearance from ODB. But I’d say "Gifted" is the album’s go-to track. Watch the video below.

What (late night music) To Watch: Chicago on the Chris Isaak Hour

Chicagochrisisaac_lThere will be slim pickings for music lovers on late-night TV this evening. Instead of making Prince the default choice (though dude was pretty suave last night on his first of three Leno performances), I’m going with a left-field pick: Chicago on the Chris Isaak Hour (10 p.m., Biography Channel). I’ve only been able to catch one episode of Isaak’s new hour-long talk show, but what I saw, I liked. That man has no shortage of awkward charm. Plus, it seems like he will ask Chicago why they haven’t been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yet, which should yield an interesting response from the venerable rock stars. And they’re playing "You’re the Inspiration." I know, I know, you can’t resist, either. Be sure to tune in.

Also scheduled for tonight:

Prince (part deux) on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
Jon Rich on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
U2 on the Late Show with David Letterman (repeat)
Nico Vega on Last Call with Carson Daly
