The pop jams on NOW That’s What I Call Music! 30 are technically closer to "five minutes ago" than "NOW" — a little "Just Dance" here, some "I’m Yours" there — but they still managed to outsell all the brand-new offerings in this debut-heavy week, landing at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 146,000 units moved. Second place went to Miley Cyrus’ Hannah Montana: The Movie soundtrack, with 139,000 copies sold. That’s a far cry from the 371,000 her previous studio album notched in its first week, but considering that this one was a multi-artist set cobbled together for a movie, it’s probably nothing to be too ashamed of.

Other debuts in the Top 20 this week included R&B songwriter Keri Hilson’s In a Perfect World… at No. 4 with 94,000; hard rockers Papa Roach’s Metamorphosis at No. 8 with 44,000; Harlem rapper Jim Jones’ Pray IV Reign at No. 9 with 43,000; country vet Martina McBride’s Shine at No. 10 with 41,000; subtle metalheads Mastodon’s Crack the Skye at No. 11 with 41,000; Stephenie Meyer faves Blue October’s Approaching Normal at No. 13 with 37,000; Houston tough Slim Thug’s Boss of All Bosses at No. 15 with 32,000; Nashville gent John Rich’s Son of a Preacher Man at No. 16 with 31,000; and, last but not least, the inimitable Yanni’s Voices at No. 20 with 26,000.

Whew! That’s 12 debuts out of the Top 20. Any bets on how many of them will be sticking around for next week’s chart?

Man, if only the record industry could recover the way that the film industry has over this recession.

I love that Now 30 album! It has all those hits–Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Ne-Yo and others in one set. I think that people recognized their favorites and bought this album. But I saw a LOT of those new releases in the store on Mar. 24th. So that was expected.

Go Mastodon! Nice to see them up there, and yet at the same time, it doesn’t make much sense…oh well…
