It’s simple. Rap artists are not musicians. They do not create there own music. as you mentioned the beats are looped and in 90% of the cases they were NOT created by that so called artist. To say that a rap artist should grace the same halls of real musicians is an afront to the industry. Now let me ask a question….if there was a hip hop of rap hall of fame, would a bank like Linkin park, rage against the machine of 311 be honored by the rap community? NO they would not. So instead of asking why we shouldn’t honor a rap artist you should be asking why fans of rock music are being FORCED into honoring rap artists??? THAT is what does not make sence
“Rock and roll” means whatever any artist wants it to mean.”
Now that you said that ask yourself how many rappers or better yet ask any rapper what kind of music they make. They won’t say Rock-N-Roll.
My only issue is that Hip-Hop is not Rock. I don’t like using labels for anything, but it is the Rock hall of fame. You have to draw the line somewhere. If it was the Music Hall of fame I would have not any problem with it.
Artists such as Madonna and Run DMC might be worthy of honor, but not at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If the organizers wish to honor these artists too, they should change their name to the “Pop Music Hall of Fame.”
Contrary to what the author of this article writes, rock and roll music *can* be fit into well established boundaries. Rock and roll is usually played with one or two electric guitars (one lead, one rhythm), a string bass or (after the mid-1950s) an electric bass guitar, and a drum kit.
Simon..the fact that you even have to ask anyone to explain this to you makes me question your intellect. I understand some people classify music as a whole and I don’t have an issue with that. What I do mind is the fact that most “Rap” artists like being defined as such. They do not go around saying they are “Rap/Rock” or even say they play “Rock”. With that being said, why would they be inducted into the RRHOF when they don’t even consider themselves in the same genre? It seems a bit hypocritical to say the very least.
So many people missing the point here. It’s not about whether rap is music(It so definitely is, a lot of it is really good if you know where to look), it’s the simple fact that rap and rock are two entirely different genres of musiPr
The Dave Clark Five’s induction to the Hall was postponed so that Grandmaster Flash- NOT a rock artist- could be inducted first. Mike Smith of the DC5 died the day before their postponed induction date. Had it occurred on schedule, Mike would have been there to accept the induction. This is why people like me hate the fact that rappers are included. They take opportunities away from hardworking rock bands, and they’re not even part of the genre. It’s ridiculous, and so is Jann Wenner.
Music is music. Anyone who doesn’t believe that rap can be entertaining live without the use of a looped beat needs to really check out The Roots. The live acoustical accompaniement and lyrics can change your mind. People like what they like but in the end labeling music rock and rap only benefits the people selling the stuff. I have heard plenty of hard rock that gets my mind “right” in the gym as well as some that just grates on my nerves. I am sure alot of people feel the same way about rap, but to paint any music with a broad brush is not beneficial to anyone looking to expand thier horizons.
Who really cares? All of you should get a hobby. That’s all everyone seems to want to do anymore is complain about something. Go find something else to do. If Run DMC made it into the Hall of Fame, good for him. If not who really cares?
I grew up with RDMC and I think they deserve the honor for a lot of different reasons. However, Nickey is right rap is a genre, just as rock, pop, jazz, R&B Christian and adult and it is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame not the R&B or Pop or Rap or Music Hall of Fame. If anyone genre can get in, they should change the name. Just some food for thought.
If you hit 500 home runs, get 3,000 hits or win 300 games, absent terrible behavoir, you get in the baseball hall of fame. What are the standards for the rock and roll hall of fame? Neil Young gets in on his own, in as part of Buffalo Springfield, but not in as part of CSNY. He made them worse?
It’s the basic problem of rock criticism: it’s three guys getting stoned in a dorm room in 1967, and their tastes continue to dominate. You get Frank Zappa instead of Warren Zevon, ’cause they like Zappa more. Richie Valens and Brenda Lee seem like token picks; Why Valens and not Bobby Fuller?
The worst though, if this thing is to mean anything is that real-life rock musicians can’t get in while Hank Williams, Miles Davis and Run-DMC can. I love Miles Davis, but seriously, he’s not a rock and roll musician. A boy band that sells tens of millions of records to teenage girls can’t get in, unless they’re the Beatles, or a boy band like the Sex Pistols, built for the critics
Ok…20 years ago I would have said Rap…crap, Now I actually listen to some of it and have some on my ipod. Who cares if they are in the Rock ‘n’ Roll hall of fame? I do believe we have a huge list of Rock groups that should be given consideration first though.
As always, too many rock fans are stuck on the paradigm of “guitar-bass-drums” when it comes to rock. Rock (and ROLL – it’s not just RAWK, Dude!) is drawn from so many sources and has inspired so many more. Like rap. It may be hard to hear how Run-DMC is related to Chuck Berry, but I could say the same thing about Yes (and, yes, I think they should be in the Hall of Fame, too). Much of what passes for r’n'r is a joke – I remember back in the ’80′s when Prince and Tina Turner put out records that were more rock and roll then most of those pathetic “hair-metal” bands that all looked and sounded alike. Run-DMC belongs in the Hall of Fame; I’d be more offended if Motley Crue made it in!
This is a good thing for the RRHOF because they need a variety of rock’n'roll. They’re remake of Aerosmith is legendary and needs to be noticed.I’m glad they are getting inducted.
Put aside all the previous (good)reasons why rap shouldn’t be in the rock hall…The R&R HOF has already shown itself to be a JOKE. I went there during a business trip. Britney Spears had a costume on display. Britney F-ing Spears. Game over.
