Rap does not belong in the ROCK AND ROLL hall of fame because it’s not rock and roll. Artists like Run DMC do deserve recognition but for there work in the field of hip hop and rap, not rock and roll. It is true that Rock and Roll has no set boundaries, but I think it is pretty clear to nearly every moron that van halen is rock while Run DMC is hip hop. Let the Rock and Roll hall of fame honor rock and roll and have your hip hop hall fame somewhere else.

First of all, the term ‘hip hop artist” is an oxymoron.

Rock music requires a modicum of talent in the art of playing music. This disqualifies Run DMC and the like. Ask a hip hop artist what a scale is? They’ll probably tell you it’s for weighing drugs.

My god, rock bands with enormous amounts of talent, bands that have actually contributed to the musical lexicon such as Yes, Rush, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant and Emerson, Lake and Palmer will never get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but Run DMC deserves this dubious honor? Being a dedicated musician, this makes me want to puke.

Also, you just accept anything that the power elite feeds you? Good sheep.

I am a musician. I have played in rock bands and taught guitar for 30 years. I love everything from Yes to Louie Armstrong to Metallica to Bach. Rap is not music. Well, if you want to call some semi-literate street thug pressing the play button on a drum machine and proceeding to babble about booty and guns in broken english music, than that’s your constitutional right. Unfortunately, it once again proves how the elite have completely dumbed-down the masses.

The problem that I have is that artists that have been eligible for YEARS, meet the criteria, and are EXTREMELY deserving are being passed up and probably will never get in. These bands should be in before artists after are inducted. The selection process is not fair and should be restructured with Jann Werner removed from the committee. As long as this man is involved many artists, especially those of progressive rock will never be allowed because of his bias towards many groups. This includes The Moody Blues, Rush, The Alan Parsons Project, (Alan Parsons should be in not only for his own music but his involvement with Pink Floyd, Al Stewart and other bands that he produced for.), Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, Genesis, the list goes on and on……

Yes, Meat Loaf deserves to be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame as well. Not taking anything away from Run DMC who were pioneers, of sorts, for rap music, certainly bringing it into the mainstream. So yea, I understand their nomination. But Meat Loaf deserves it too. His first album – Bat Out of Hell, has gone Platinum 14x & continues to sell approximately 200,000 albums (CDs) per year. Not bad for an album that was released in 1977, eh?? So absolutely, I agree with Carole, Meat Loaf should be inducted as well!

No these guys arent rock and roll the very definition of rock and roll is a pumping piano like jerry lee lewis loud guitars like jimi henderix and footstomping anthems like highway to hell that is rock and roll alice cooper DESERVES to get into the rock and roll hof there should be a completely other hall of fame for rap and hip hop i like both hip hop and rap.

The HOF is so off base…and single minded (the Rolling Stone publisher’s mind). Where are the Moody Blues, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Billy Fury, Cliff Richard…it’s a shame! It used to just be Atlantic records people who got put in the so-called ‘Hall of Fame’…now that they’ve inducted all the Atlantic people, it’s time to move on and induct deserving people regardless of nationality!
