I think Stevie Wonder’s “lately” could have made the list –but I think it’s still waiting for a great cover to make it classic.

    Without you, by Harry Nilsson
“No, I can’t forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that’s just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
    Yes, it shows
    No, I can’t forget tomorrow
When I think of all my sorrow
When I had you there but then I let you go
And now it’s only fair that I should let you know
    What you should know
I can’t live if living is without you
    I can’t live, I can’t give any more
I can’t live if living is without you
    I can’t give, I can’t give any more”

I’m thinking that maybe these were left out because they’re more than heartbreaking, they’re devastating:
    Bruce Springsteen’s You’re Missing and The Verve’s The Drugs Don’t Work…

  • Ryan

This list does not have “Goodnight Lover” by Songs Ohia and that is not okay

This is crap… where is Tori Amos??? “China” “Hey Jupiter” “Baker Baker” “Northern Lad” “1000 Oceans” “Putting The Damage On” “A Sorta Fairytale” Hello… these are the saddest songs ever written.
And “Mary Jane” or “That Particualar Time” by Alanis Morissette should be here too…

    A few left out~
IRVINE – Kelly Clarkson (brilliant plea to God)
JUST A DREAM – Carrie Underwood (a soldiers wife looses her husband at war)
DON’T TAKE THE GIRL – Tim McGraw (sad tragic love story)
THE BABY – Blake Shelton (a mother dies w/o saying bye to her baby)
TOP OF THE WORLD – Dixie Chicks (about a husband who never let his wife be)
STAY – Sugarland (about an affair)

How could you forget Sia’s “Breathe Me”????

  • Scott

It is a travesty that Radiohead’s “Creep” isn’t on this list!

  • billy

dixie chicks – top of the world.

  • Charstin

Several Patsy Cline songs .. ‘Crazy’ ‘Sweet Dreams’ ‘I Fall to Pieces’ ‘She’s Got You’ …

  • ALEX

WALKING ON A WIRE by RICHARD AND LINDA THOMPSON.
Most underrated song OF ALL TIME.

  • Me

“Last Goodbye” by Jeff Buckley. This is made even sadder by his untimely death just a couple years later.
For Canadian music fans out there, I’d add “Lost Together” by Blue Rodeo, “Apparitions” by Matthew Good Band and “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” by Bruce Cockburn (covered by Barenaked Ladies).

What – no Hallelujah or Dust in the Wind? Boo.

Um, how about ” My Heart will go on”, “In the arms of the Angels”, ” Alyssa Lies” ” Christmas Shoes”, ” Eagles Wings” ” God Bless the USA”, “Amazing Grace”

Warren Zevon’s “Keep Me In Your Heart” always gets to me .. in part because he knew he was dying from lung cancer when he wrote/recorded his last album .. and this song was written for his loved ones. Gets me every time I hear it.
