Sugarland is known for their genre-bending covers — "Life in a Northern Town," "Irreplaceable" — and on Friday in Minneapolis, they tried out this gorgeous take on one song I’m pretty sure no other mainstream country band would have touched. I think it’s kinda cool. But is it "country"? And does that "matter"? What do you think, Mixers?

I love Sugarland! This is beautiful.
I’m a huge KOL fan and I don’t think it was all that bad. It’s just a bit odd hearing such a… rough song made so much more ballad-y.
I think Jennifer Nettles could sing anything…
Sugarland is awesome! Jennifer Nettles is ridiculously awesome! That voice! I want to see someone on American Idol cover a Sugarland song… I’m pretty sure it hasn’t been done.
It’s not “country” sounding, at least according to traditionalists. There’s a reason that Sugarland is successful…its things like this…no one else in Country Music would risk it, but no one else could pull it off either! BTW, of everyone at the ACMs, Sugarland had the greatest sales increases: more than Taylor Swift, more than Miley Cyrus, more than Kenny Chesney, and their CD has been out the longest of the others.
Sugarland can seriously do no wrong.
Absolutely wonderful. I would KILL for a studio cut of this or even a remastered recording of this performance. Loved the original, adored this one! Goosebumps, baby!
Whitney, you left out their cover of Matt Nathanson’s ‘Come On Get Higher,’ which is the best one Sugarland’s done. This is pretty good, but I’d rank it behind their ‘Come On Get Higher’ cover. Jen oversings it a little IMO. I can’t say I’ve ever preferred a Sugarland cover to the original but they have awesome taste in music and they keep it interesting.
It doesn’t matter that it’s not country. Jennifer’s got a soulful voice and she and Kristian have got the musical intelligence to make great choices. Even though there are other voices I prefer I don’t think there are 2 better live acts than Keith Urban and Sugarland. Can’t wait until they roll into my town together!
This song is so haunting and beautiful that I couldn’t NOT post it to the interweb. It brought me back to the one of the first times I saw Jennifer Nettles sing… a decade ago.
I thought it was absolutely amazing. I was there that night, and her singing it just put you in a trance. These two are not afraid to do anything. That’s why I and so many people love them.
Is it country?
Does it Matter
NO.
…her voice is like a mating call, I swear something subliminal going on there.
i heard KOL sing it a while ago. but when i heard Jen sing it i was mesmerized! they can do anything! like others have said, its not mainstream traditional country, but Sugarland isnt mainstream traditional country. they know how to stretch their limits and do what nobody else would. i love how they have such a wide variety of musical tastes! i just love Sugarland and everything that they do!!! i will always be a huge fan no matter what they do!
They don’t need to wait 10+ years to do a cover album of all the songs they’ve done – that would be fun
Sugarland also covered “It’s a Hard Life Wherever You Go” by Nanci Griffith. That was amazing, just like this duo.
