Blue Oyster Cult on the Club Ninja tour in Cardiff (St David’s Hall) – small venue with great accoustics and a huge PA system (the largest I ever saw used in there by a long way). We were all deaf for over a week after. Seen Motorhead several times, and they are loud, but B.O.C. were louder!
Skinny Puppy in 2007 at Koolhaus in Toronto. White Mice and Otto Von Schirach opened (they helped ruin my hearing too–cheers guys!). Ever since, I don’t go to a concert without my earplugs–saw Ministry there the next year.
Motorhead at the Palladium in Worcester, Mass last august. I went to Wendy’s after the show and couldn’t hear the lady at the drive thru and for 2 weeks after.
motorhead.. jesus christ
Bailter Space, in Boston back in the mid-90′s sometime, don’t remember where. Each song would start with an ear-piercing half-second blast of feedback as they turned up the guitar and bass, just before hitting the first chord. I think it was the Vortura tour. I didn’t know them at the time, and was friggin blown away by the wall of sound coming out of the PA. I hear they are coming back after a 10 year hiatus, hope they are still as good…
Last night I attended Motorhead’s show over at the Roseland, and in light of the fact that their set was still resonating in my ringing ears I felt compelled to do a search on EW and see what else has been written about them. The first item that popped up was this post, and I thought it was hilarious how not only did Clark say that Motorhead is the loudest band he’s ever seen, but also that he used the word “deafened” in the headline — I used that exact same word to caption a photo of them that I uploaded on Facebook mid-set. And I’m by no means a stranger to rock shows with aggressive volume levels, but the treble blasted by Lemmy and crew can’t be too far off from those sonic canons they use on Somali pirates.
Motorhead rule. When ya think The Who held the record of loudest band with 76000 watts at Charlton Athletics football ground and Motorhead are using over 40000 watts in small venues like the civic, well it says it all.
I don’t think they’ve broken any records, but for a club act (most of the time), the Breeders are extraordinarily loud. Never thought they would be.
But My Bloody Valentine is ear-busting. Went to one of their shows in ’08, and the disco ball in the club started swaying back and forth from the sound waves.
The Motorhead – No sleep till hammersmith album was not recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon it was recorded on a tour in 1981 and the recording are took from either Queens hall, Leeds or City Hall, Newcastle. With the exception of Iron Horse/Born to lose which was recorded in 1980
