What's the strangest tour lineup you've ever seen?

Upcomingtours_lWe like to think of ourselves here at the Music Mix as people of far-ranging tastes — proclivities that extend, even, to having no taste at all. Still, we were mildly flummoxed today to hear news of a tour featuring three acts that seem to have little in common beyond a vaguely shared indie cache, the same box of Clairol Nice ‘n Easy in Medium Brown, and their biological lady parts: Juliette Lewis, Cat Power, and the Pretenders, featuring ageless frontman Chrissie Hynde.

We can get behind all three on their own (or more accurately, the second two — Juliette’s musical efforts so far are kind of the DQYDJ equivalent of Michael Jordan’s baseball career).

Still, a fickle finger on the iPod shuffle button is one thing; pogo-ing through actress-turned-sometime-singer Lewis’s snarling Sunset Strip rawk revivalism, then laying down for Cat Power’s dusky, intimate ballads, and then somehow rallying for the Pretenders’ spiky, melodic jangle sounds like a recipe for a thoroughly tri-polar evening. (As bad-ass and shouty as Chan Marshall looks above on the far right, Cat Power is, in concert, decidely not so.)

But readers, I’m sure you’ve seen far odder tuna-and-peanut-butter style bills in your time. Do tell, in the comments section below!

In November of 1982 The B-52′s and Joan Jett opened for The Who at the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida. I did not attend the concert but knew some friends who did. They said that the B-52′s were booed offstage (don’t think they finished their set) and Ms. Jett was the target of many a paper cup. You have to ask yourself what they were thinking when they put together that lineup! O_o

I was ath the Tangeringe bowl for the so called Who’s “last tour”. It was true..The b52′s were booed and pelted off the stage after about 20 mins.Damn shame cause the B’s rock! Being from Philly I had seen Joan Jett many times but i dont recall the crowd being as mean to her

Wasn’t there for it, but didn’t the Beastie Boys open for Madonna early on? And this was the Beastie Boys when they were in their ridiculously un-PC Licesnsed to Ill phase, just a couple years removed from playing hardcore shows at CBGB.

DQYDJ? Have you ever been to a Juliette and the Licks show? This chick ROCKS.

The “Brotherly Love” tour with Oasis and Black Crowes was absolutely bizarre, a concept to throw together 2 bands with little in common other than, well, being fronted by brothers. Half the crowd left after the Oasis set, while the other half arrived for the Crowes set. I have to say, though, I enjoyed both halves of the show.

Most eclectic lineup I have ever heard of much less seen:
    Horde Tour 1996
Lead King Crimson (this is who I primarily went to see, but the crowd was to say the least…puzzled, but they rocked…sex, sleep, eat, drink, dream…)
    Rusted Root (pot heads rejoice)
Lenny Kravitz (my friend actually got flipped off by Lenny when his tour bus pulled up…he was thrilled)
Neil Young (the most haunting greatest live song I ever heard…Cortez the Killer)
Blues Traveller (who else closes Horde…but anyway)

Remember SARS-stock in Toronto when Justin Timberlake took the stage with AC DC and the Rolling Stones?

  • nikki

when 311 opened up for snoop dog

  • Grant

It was one of the early editions of the SnoCore tour, where it was opened by DJ Spooky, then Soul Coughing, followed by Redman, and headlined by Everclear.
    That was a weird tour.

A 1980 concert in Toronto called Heat Wave featured The B52′s, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders and The Village People.

This writer should study up on the fact that Juliette Lewis has toured for over the past 5 years and is releasing her third album. So though maybe for the writer sitting behind a computer it would seem she “shouldn’t quit her day job”, he should get out a bit, she already did.

I was at the concert in Orlando when both Joan Jett and The B-52s opened for The Who. Actually, Joan Jett was the first act of the day, followed by The B-52s. They had opened the doors to The Tangerine Bowl early that morning to avoid any risk of a stampede, like the one that had occurred in Ohio.
Just before Joan hit the stage a biker gang had pushed everyone out from the front of the stage.
When Joan stepped on to the stage the biker gang began chanting “who, who, who” and started throwing stuff.
Then When The B-52s hit the stage, the gang continued chanting “who” and throwing stuff. Someone threw an apple like a baseball and hit Cindy Wilson in the stomach.
The B-52s finished their set. Really it was the biker gang causing all of the ruckus – everyone else in the stadium seemed to be into it.

The last time I attended a live concert was a few months ago. I thought it was the best concert that I had ever been to even that concertstickets price was high sky maybe Coz I used not to research enough to see if there were better pricing. But now I can save some dollars via after finding this:
