Dr. Dre is one of the greatest music producers of all time. Dr. Pepper is a thoroughly tasty beverage. So why am I not more excited about the new Dr. Pepper ad that’s about to start airing next week, in which Dr. Dre plays part of a new song from his infinitely-delayed magnum opus, Detox? I guess it’s because we already heard this particular Detox track months ago, when a demo version leaked under the name "S— Popped Off."
Dope beat, don’t get me wrong, but at this point — after years of hints and whispers and snippets and rough leaks — it’ll take a little more than that to get this Dre fan’s interest. (Especially when we just got an entire album full of Dre beats that are actually new.)
But don’t mind jaded old me. If this ad means that Detox is really coming this year, that’s something worth toasting with a glass of your favorite fizzy substance. So, here you go: Ten seconds of a sorta-new Detox track, preceded by 20 more seconds of Dr. Dre selling soft drinks. Thirsty yet?
