Prom songs: Let's all sway together uncomfortably and reflect

Categories: Ah, Youth

Faithhill_lIt’s the time of year when precocious youngsters pose for pictures on their front lawns and fumble with corsages. Yes, it’s prom season, and like most other high-school-related things we remember (or try to forget), there’s a soundtrack attached. All I remember thinking during my prom (besides cursing myself for spending so much money on that damn sparkly dress) was, "Who the hell picked this song?" My Class of 2002′s prom song was "There You’ll Be," a terribly mediocre track (by Faith Hill) from a terribly mediocre movie (Pearl Harbor.) Because nothing says awkward slow dance like reflecting on one of our nation’s great tragedies! Not that I had the highest expectations for that evening, but this was the best they could do? Isn’t there an entire Boyz II Men catalog devoted to this stuff? Maybe we just came of age in the wrong prom-song era, but I know there have got to be some gems out there. So how about it, Music Mixers? Did you sway to KC & JoJo’s "All My Life" or Eve 6′s "Here’s to the Night"? Or did you avoid eye contact throughout Lionel Richie and Diana Ross’ "Endless Love? Share your prom-song hits and misses below.

Nick Cannon calls out Eminem for insulting Mariah Carey: Pick a side!

Eminemcanon_lIt’s been four whole days since the diabolically constructed controversy-generating machine that is Eminem’s Relapse leaked to the Web, and finally someone’s taken a bit of the abundant bait that Em is tossing at us all. Yes, America’s Got Talent host Nick Cannon has heard "Bagpipes from Baghdad," the Relapse track about him and his wife Mariah Carey, and he likes it about as much as you’d guess.

A sternly worded post this weekend on Cannon’s blog, which seems to have since disappeared (hmm), dismissed Em as being "still obsessed with my wife, the same female that wouldn’t let him get to second base from 8 years ago" and summed up Relapse as Eminem "rapping about when he used to be hot…Like when Al Bundy gloats about his High school football prime." Most explosively, Cannon accused Eminem of being racially insensitive: "I realized, that this so-called man has just disrespected and slanderized one of the world’s most significantly influential artists, one of the most notable BLACK females of our time, the incredibly cherished, globally loved and world-embraced woman of color, Mariah Carey…You sold your little records and made a little bit of change but now you are stepping in the wrong territory. You may have been able to rape and pillage our artform like an old school Caucasian con man and nobody said anything because we respected your talent, but now you’ve made the ultimate mistake."

Damn. I’m reluctant to side with Nick Cannon on anything, though I do give him points for admitting later in this blog post that he himself is "a corny, wack rapping, boy toy from Nickelodeon." But Cannon is right that "Bagpipes from Baghdad" is one of several Relapse tracks where Eminem crosses lines that don’t really need to be crossed — lines that he already crossed much more cleverly a decade ago. The funniest/saddest part is, this whole blow-up is probably more or less exactly what Eminem was hoping would happen when he dredged up his ancient alleged fling with Mariah on Relapse. So whose side are you on in this debate? Do you sympathize with Cannon’s spousal loyalty, or do you think he should learn to laugh at Eminem’s out-of-bounds jokes? And — gulp — what do you think of comparing Em to "an old school Caucasian con man"?

UPDATE: Read EW’s interview with Cannon about the whole flap here.

Amy Winehouse's 'comeback' gig: Trainwreck alert!

Categories: Amy Winehouse

Sigh. Yes, she’s at it again. Just when it seemed like troubled singer Amy Winehouse might be getting it together a bit — she’s been working on a new album, which, despite all of the craziness, we’re dying to hear — she’s returned with another wacky episode. Winehouse was set to play her first concert of the year in St. Lucia on Friday, but she cut the show short after a somewhat kooky set. The official reason given for the aborted concert was bad weather, but before she left the stage Winehouse had apparently been forgetting lyrics and performing erratically. At one point, she reportedly fell down. Check out a clip from the St. Lucia show below, then let us know: Are you excited for a new Winehouse album? Or have you had about enough of her sorry spectacle?

Kylie Minogue talks about her new tour, her craziest outfits, and Paula Abdul

Categories: Kylie Minogue, Q&A

Kylieminogue_l“Um, my dog ate my homework. There was a flood… All those excuses.”

That’s Kylie Minogue, pop idol, gay icon, and global sequin ambassador, explaining why it’s taken her twenty-plus years to bring her live show to the States. It’s finally happening — a six-date tour is scheduled to start this fall — and EW got a few minutes today with Ms. Minogue at NYC’s Greenwich Hotel to chat about the good news.

In person, Kylie’s famously petite frame is every bit as tiny as you’ve heard, and her personality every bit as big. Charming and warm at the end of a long day of press that began with a Today Show spot, Ms. Minogue — holding a paper fan for air and emphasis — was all smiles as she shared the scoop on her upcoming tour, her American fanbase, and her thoughts on Paula Abdul’s new Kylie-inspired single.

Entertainment Weekly: Did you ever try to bring your other tours here?
Kylie Minogue: Oh yeah. We’ve discussed it many times. Financially, it made absolutely zero sense. Last year, I spent so long touring. And I’ve had a great time, and I have a band I’m just loving — we’re really just vibing. So, it felt like it was now or never. I’m absolutely thrilled and amazed at the response so far.

Is there a possibility that more dates could be added? It seems like it’s going to be a whirlwind tour, and they’re already selling out.
I’ll try, yeah.

The title of the tour is For You, For Me, is that right?
It was For You, For Me. And maybe that’s going to stick, I’m not sure. I just thought: it’s not for an album. I’m not promoting anything. It’s for you, for the audience. And actually, it’s for me, because it’ll be an absolute pleasure to be here and to share a show with you.

Is that going to be a new single or anything? “For You, For Me”?
There’s thinking! Hmmm… [laughs]

So what kind of set list can we expect?
You’ll have the hits, for sure. Many of which will be remixed or in different versions. I’ll take you back to the beginning…

Creed tell EW about their bitter split, happy reunion, and 'aberrant' behavior

Categories: Creed, Reunions

Creed_lJust a year ago, the idea of the four members of Creed agreeing to be in the same room together, let alone making another CD, would have seemed preposterous. The post-grunge rockers enjoyed enormous success with their first three albums, selling 25 million records just in America, but split up five years ago following a tour marred by singer Scott Stapp’s alcohol-fueled misbehavior, which included mangling the lyrics to some of their biggest hits at an infamously poor concert in Chicago.

After the band’s demise, Stapp further worried fans by appearing intoxicated on a TV show called Casino Cinema, and later entered rehab. Meanwhile, in a 2006 Rolling Stone article, guitarist Mark Tremonti compared the band’s dying days to the Vietnam War, and said he wouldn’t want to play their songs again.

Cut to last month, and the announcement that the quartet of Stapp, Tremonti, drummer Scott Phillips and bassist Brian Marshall (who left the band after 1999′s Human Clay CD) would reunite for a summer tour, and were already working on a new album. This week, EW sat down for a chat with the band, including a healthy-looking Stapp. After the jump, they talk about their reunion, that last tour, and why it’s important to keep your old hair in a Ziploc bag.

T.I. expels rising star Alfamega from his Grand Hustle crew after his informant past is revealed -- fair play?

Categories: Alfamega, T.I.

Credibility in rap is a tricky thing. Anyone over the age of 15 ought to know that their favorite rappers aren’t always being entirely honest when they brag about their criminal past in songs. That’s probably why, for example, Rick Ross’ career hasn’t suffered too much from last year’s revelation that, despite his constant claims to have once been a major narcotics kingpin, Ross actually worked as a correctional officer in the early ’90s. Ross had to endure a few months of sideways talk from 50 Cent and legions of blog commenters, but in the end, nobody seemed to care about this supposedly shocking news all that much. The man is a musician, and his fans like the music he makes; his real-life backstory is more or less irrelevant.

But is there a line that can’t be crossed in situations like this? Alfamega is finding out the hard way this week. Up until very recently, Alfa was one of T.I.’s most trusted associates, a rising star on Tip’s Grand Hustle label. That was before The Smoking Gun’s investigative reporters uncovered evidence that Alfamega was a Drug Enforcement Administration informant in the mid-’90s, providing key testimony that put at least one alleged drug trafficker in jail. It’s a surprise, to say the least, and it hasn’t sat very well with T.I., who’s about to go to prison himself on gun charges after a bodyguard of his turned federal informant.

Yesterday, T.I. said that he was severing all ties with his one-time sidekick: "Even though all our artists and employees are asked by us to behonest and open about their past history, at no time did Alfa discloseto me or Grand Hustle what has now appeared in the media. Heessentially deceived us by failing to fully disclose the truth abouthis past, and there is no place in our organization for dishonest andmisleading behavior."

Harsh words, if not unexpected ones. Listen to T.I.’s statement below, and weigh in: What do you think about this situation? Do you think Alfamega deserves to become a professional untouchable because of his past cooperation with law enforcement, or should this be a non-issue?

White Stripes' reunion "won't be too far off", sayeth Jack

Categories: White Stripes

Whitestripes_lThe White Stripes have always been good at keeping us guessing. Their initial fame was shrouded in "What the frak are they? Brother and sister? Husband and wife?" mystery. Now we’ve just been left wondering, what’s next for the duo?

The last few years, Jack White’s main focus has been on his various side projects, including The Raconteurs and new supergroup The Dead Weather. Meanwhile, Meg White just got engaged to Jackson Smith (yep, Fred and Patti’s son.) In an interview with MusicRadar.com, Jack confirmed that a new White Stripes album "won’t be too far off. Maybe next year." Jack also dished that he and Meg had started tinkering around with new tracks before their Feb. 20 gig on Conan‘s finale episode, their last live performance to date.

While the Stripes’ road has always been a bit of a bumpy one (Meg’s struggles with anxiety issues put the brakes on their last tour), Jack holds no grudges: "We just needed to stop for a while. When it comes down to yourhealth. It’s hard; people don’t really understand. They think you goup on stage and you’re having a blast, like you’re partying or somes—. That’s not the case. It’s hard work to go on tour." What do you think, Music Mixers? Are you excited to hear new material from White Stripes? Or has the love since worn off?

Cobra Starship get help from Leighton Meester on 'Good Girls Go Bad' -- and bad feels pretty good

Cobra Starship has just released their new duet with Gossip Girl‘s Leighton Meester. called "Good Girls Go Bad." and I’m already OBSESSED! I have to admit I’ve been a fan of the band since their Snakes on a Plane  days, and this one, co-written by American Idol judge Kara Dioguardi, is a perfect summer song—it just feels so…sparkly!

I was in the studio with Meester a few weeks ago while she was recording her debut album and she had this to say about working with the band: "They’re awesome. They completely compliment my style and I’ve never seen them live, but apparently they’re unbelievable."

I totally agree with Meester. What do you think Music Mix-ers? Is this your new jam?

Eminem's 'Relapse' leaks: Are you going to listen?

Categories: Eminem, Leaks

Eminem_lIt’s nearly inevitable at this point that any high-profile album will leak to the Internet at least a week or two before its official release date, so no one should be surprised to hear that Eminem’s Relapse made its way online last night. Interscope managed to keep this thing under wraps until 12 days before its May 19 drop date, which is actually pretty impressive. Anyway, far be it from us at the Music Mix to encourage you to illegally download leaked music, but let’s just say that Relapse is out there for anyone who knows how to use Google.

It’s obviously way too early to give a considered opinion of this album, but I can say that if you were praying for Em to return to his most shocking, offensive extremes, Relapse just might be a wish come true. You’ve got "Bagpipes from Baghdad," in which Em says some pretty raw stuff about his ex(?) Mariah Carey and her new husband Nick Cannon. Then there’s "Insane," where he graphically describes being allegedly sexually abused by his stepfather. Or maybe you’d prefer "My Mom," which sticks to the more familiar territory of detailing his mother’s alleged drug binges? It’s all very intense stuff, delivered via some of Em’s slipperiest flows in years.

That’s all I’m saying for now. I’ll have to take a few more listens before deciding where Relapse stands in Eminem’s catalog. How about you, Em fans? Are you tempted to listen to the Relapse leak, or will you wait til the 19th? And if you’ve already broken down and checked it out, how do you think it stacks up?

The Jonas Brothers’ new song: Like, OMG, you guys, it kind of rocks?!

Oh, those precious little Jonas Brothers. Their movie may have bombed, and their TV show debuted to only solid, not spectacular ratings, but the heartthrobs aren’t letting that deter them on their quest for World Domination.

Next up? New single “Paranoid,” the lead-off track from their new album, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, out June 15. When the JoBros said they wanted to go in a harder rock direction (and name-dropped bands like Kings of Leon and the Zutons), I sort of laughed it off. Judging from the surprisingly good (great?) first single, it looks like they may have succeeded — in their own Disney make-believe rock star kind of way, of course.

Listen below and share your thoughts: Could “Paranoid” be a contender for song of the summer? Or am I on glue? And who is the song about — Miley? Taylor? Some other girl we don’t care about who’s not nearly as famous?
