This week in chart history: Hola, 1999!

Come with me, Music Mixers, on a magical journey through the mists of time, and let us return to a decade ago — a time when scrubs were scorned, Cher knew vocoders better than T-Pain, and Spanglish temporarily became the language of millions.

Hark, what have we here? Apparently, on May 8, 1999, a man who very much enjoyed dancing in the rain, skin the color of mocha, and other things that make la vida so loca was king. His royal court? Among them, an all-girl R&B trio at the height of their power ("No Scrubs"), a then-52-year-old diva with the most successful single of her four-decade career ("Believe"), a Louisiana Lolita just beginning hers ("…Baby One More Time"), and, well, an old New Kid ("Give It To You"). Below, the top twenty of 10 years ago:

1. Ricky Martin, "Livin’ la Vida Loca"
2. TLC, "No Scrubs"
3. Sixpence None the Richer, "Kiss Me"
4. Sugar Ray, "Every Morning"
5. Cher, "Believe"
6. Busta Rhymes feat. Janet Jackson, "What’s It Gonna Be"
7. Whitney Houston feat. Faith Evans and Kelly Price, "Heartbreak Hotel"
8. Goo Goo Dolls, "Slide"
9. Monica, "Angel of Mine"
10. JT Money feat. Sole, "Who Dat"
11. Tim McGraw, "Please Remember Me"
12. Lenny Kravitz, "Fly Away"
13. Jordan Knight, "Give It to You"
14. Everlast, "What It’s Like"
15. 112 feat. Lil’ Z, "Anywhere"
16. Tyrese, "Sweet Lady"
17. Silk, "If You (Lovin’ Me)"
18. Britney Spears, "…Baby One More Time"
19. Sara McClachlan, "Angel"
20. 98 Degrees, "The Hardest Thing"

What sweet nostalgia, no? Look how how many here still thrive! And how many have vaporized! Watch the Beatles-like hysteria Mr. Ricky Martin conjurs in England, below, and leave us your best (and worst) memories of Prince’s favorite party year.

'Grey's Anatomy' wedding song: Stream Ingrid Michaelson's 'Turn to Stone' exclusively here

Picking the right song to accompany a walk down the aisle is always serious business. But picking the perfect song for prime-time TV’s most romantic wedding ever (or at least this season)? You’d better choose carefully.

The special song playing for the wedding on tonight’s 100th episode of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy was "Turn to Stone," a brand-new tune by singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson — no stranger to Grey’s, herself. And right now the Music Mix is the only place you can hear "Turn to Stone" in full for free…unless you DVRed tonight’s episode and are rewinding those vows over and over again, in which case we will totally not judge you.

Michaelson is currently finishing up her second album for a fall ’09 release. Though "Turn to Stone" won’t be on there, you can buy the Grey’s wedding song as a single on iTunes now. But first, give it a free listen or several below and let us know what you think!

Trent Reznor to Prince, Rivers Cuomo: your new music blows

Trentreznor_lHe may be newly engaged, but true love can’t take the edge of off Mr. Trent Reznor, ladies and gentlemen. When asked in a recent fan Q&A whether he had a backlog of unreleased NIN material, the Nine Inch Nails frontman replied replied, in part:

“I’m not Prince or Rivers Cuomo, who brags about having hundreds of great songs. And to that I would say, ‘Prince, if you have a hundred great songs or a thousand, how about picking a few and putting them on your record that you’ve put out, because your last several have sucked.’ Same for you, Rivers. I say that constructively, you know.”

Them’s fightin’ words, Trent! Then again, we’re talking about the guy who, back in March tweeted "You know that feeling you get when somebody embarrasses themselves so badly YOU feel uncomfortable? Heard Chris Cornell’s record? Jesus." So, not a shy one, our Reznor.

But what do you think, readers? Is that a fair assessment of the recent output from the Purple One and the Weezer One, or just a random bitchfest on the rock-star playground?

Bret from Flight of the Conchords has another, possibly even odder, band

You might have thought being half of New Zealand’s "fourth most popular folk parody duo" would be enough for Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie. But no! It turns out he has another band, called the Wellington International Ukelele Orchestra, whose line-up consists of McKenzie and a bunch of his, yes, ukelele-playing pals. Alas, there’s no news where they stand popularity wise in terms of New Zealand-based international ukele orchestras. But you can watch a video with their version of the old Bonnie Tyler tune "It’s A Heartache" and a live revamp of Outkast’s "Hey Ya" below. According to TWIUO member (and Conchords cellist) Nigel Collins, the band are hoping to play some festivals in America next year. "I think we’re better live than in the studio," adds McKenzie himself. "But to be honest, you’re either going to like a lot of people playing ukeleles or you’re not." Meanwhile, the Conchords themselves are still touring the US. You can check out the dates here.

OK Go's Damian Kulash talks new album, plus exclusive stream of 'Skyscrapers'

OKGO

They’ve been around for years — holla back, "Get Over It" fans! — but broke through big in 2006 thanks to the treadmill-riffic video for "Here It Goes Again." Now, after three straight years of touring, OK Go are back with a new album to be released in September, tentatively titled The Influence of the Blue Ray of the Sunlight and of the Blue Color of the Sky. (It’s the title of a book from the 19th century, asserting that blue light was the answer to all of humanity’s problems.) Frontman Damian Kulash tells the Music Mix that it’s "a more contemplative record, but also much more anthemic, much dancier. And it’s a way more emotional record than anything we’ve done. So it’s both sadder and happier in its way." As for their influences this time out? "The little bits of Purple Rain that have been trying to make their way to the surface on our last records have no longer been impeded by any other influences. Now all it is is one big attempt to be the records I listened to when I was 12."

A new track, “Skyscrapers,” will be available exclusively to Banana Republic customers starting May 13 as part of the clothing chain’s City Sounds compilation — but because we love you, Music Mixers, you can hear it right now, no khaki purchase required. Give it a listen, and follow after the jump for a Q&A with Kulash wherein he discusses the factors that led his band to be featured on ginormous billboards nationwide, as well as some behind-the-scenes video of the album’s snowy recording sessions.

What's the best rainy-day song of all time?

Tagged:

Purplerain_lIt’s been raining pretty consistently here for the past few days, and if you believe the widget on my desktop — based on the accuracy of this particular Crappy Weather Calculator, I sadly do — it looks to be predictable London weather here in good old NYC at least until the weekend.

Naturally, like the most heartbreaking song of all time question I considered (as did many of you) a few weeks ago, it got me to thinking of what the best rainy-day song ever might be, too.

Halfway through my pondering, my pal here Leah Greenblatt randomly sent me an old song by the Fruit Bats — the very same song that appears at 1 minute 18 seconds in the trailer for the upcoming Hugh Dancy-Rose Byrne rom-com Adam, which my friend Katie coincidentally also just sent to me — and immediately it struck me that this might very well indeed be: The Best Rainy-Day Song of All Time.

Because, for me, a rainy-day song should comfort you in all the right ways when it’s a little glum outside and you might be feeling that way too inside, but also for when your little heart boat drifts a little too far out to sea.

So, listen below, and let me know if you think "When U Love Somebody" by the Fruit Bats might be the best rainy-day song of all time. And, if not, then what is?

Kylie Minogue announces first US tour, or Why your gay coworker just screamed

Depending on your fondness for robo-pop beats, respirator vocals and spangly full-body leopard suits, this may or may not be earthshaking news: Kylie Minogue is coming to America! Twenty years into a career that has produced hits on both sides of the Atlantic, the pint-size diva has still never given Yankees a chance to catch her live act. But all that’s changing this fall, when Ms. Minogue kicks off a six-city tour of the states, starting  September 30th in Oakland, CA (tickets go on sale May 15).

My coworker Mandi Bierly already outed me months ago as a massive Kylie fan, so it’s no secret I’m Spinning Around with Fever at the thought that I Should Be So Lucky to get the chance to Come Into Kylie’s World. She’s Like a Drug to me. It was Love at First Sight. Ok, I’m done. Promise(s).

Anybody else out there as excited as I am? A little taste of last year’s European tour, below:

U2 releases 'Magnificent' new video: We'll take anything over 'Get On Your Boots'

Tagged: ,

U2 has unveiled a brand spankin’ new video for "Magnificent," their second single off the band’s No Line on the Horizon, which finally rings the much-needed death knell for terrible lead-off song "Get On Your Boots."

The scenic Moroccan setting has some lovely sun-drenched imagery, complementing the tune very well I think. Are you into it? And Stereogum says a will.i.am remix of the song will drop soon. What in the world will that sound like?

Interpol's Paul Banks to go all Chris Gaines on us with a solo album

Paulbanks_lWith Interpol’s grungey-voiced frontman Paul Banks planning to drop a solo album this summer under the odd-sounding pseudonym Julian Plenti, I got to thinking: What’s in a name? Nothing less than your entire identity, perhaps?

Musicians masquerading under pseudonyms of various egregiousness is nothing new. For example: Paul David Hewson is a fine name indeed, but it does conjure imagery of a bank teller or a TPS-report writer rather than the lead singer of U2. And Pink’s appeal has long been tethered to the vibrant spunk of her colorful name, not to mention the vague threat she could also kick your ass. The worst thing Alecia Beth Moore could probably do is meekly threaten to throw her Jamba Juice at you. (But you totally know she wouldn’t. Those are delicious and cost like five bucks.)

We can now stamp Banks’ membership into the illustrious pseudonym club, whose A-listers include Garth Brooks/Chris Gaines and Beyonce/Sasha Fierce. Even though Banks has been performing under the name for years, he will finally release a proper solo album, called Skyscraper, on Aug. 4. A snippet of the album’s title track can be hard on loop at JulianPlenti.com.

From just the quick preview, it sounds like Banks’ solo stuff retains Interpol’s haunting, almost visceral sound and married it with more of a chamber-pop vibe. I’m intrigued. But I’m not sure how I feel about the name Julian Plenti. Granted, at least you can pronounce it, which is more than I can say for Justin Vernon’s moniker Bon Iver. (I feel like a tool every time I say "bone eye-ver," not "ee-vare") What do you all think? Are you Plenti excited for Banks’ new project? Or did my "joke" just ruin it? And what are some other pseudonyms you like/love/loathe?
