Eminem's gory '3 A.M.' video: Did he go too far?

I’ve already said my piece on "3 A.M.," Eminem’s return to over-the-top nastiness. (Mostly a good thing! For me, at least.) As for the video, which debuted this weekend on Cinemax, well…let’s just say it runs with the horrorcore theme of Em’s lyrics. Okay, I’ll be a little more specific: There’s a ton of fake blood, actors pretending to be corpses, Eminem stalking the halls of a hospital like a lunatic, and the like. What, you were expecting fun for the whole family? Check out the obviously NSFW "3 A.M." clip below, then let us know what you think of the latest step toward May 19′s Relapse.

Wayne Coyne Q&A: He's happy about Oklahoma honor, but sad about Arcade Fire feud

Waynecoyne_lOklahoma rockers/sonic explorers The Flaming Lips are no strangers to weirdness. But even singer Wayne Coyne found the recent controversy over Lips track “Do You Realize?” becoming his state’s official rock song a tad off-the-wall. “It was silly,” he tells EW. “People were talking about the fact that I used bad language. I mean, Jesus, I’m not running for office! Last time I checked, a guy in a rock band is allowed to cuss if he wants to.”

The saga began last year when folks in Oklahoma voted on what song they wanted to become their official rock anthem, and an overwhelming number plumped for “Do You Realize?” On March 2, the Flaming Lips visited the Oklahoma Senate to see that body pass the appropriate resolution. But the measure subsequently failed to get the necessary amount of support in the House of Representatives after some Republican members objected to Coyne’s potty-mouth and bassist Michael Ivins having worn a hammer and sickle T-shirt during his Senate visit.

Finally, Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry signed an executive order making “Do You Realize?” the state rock song, and did so this Tuesday at a ceremony attended by Coyne, drummer-guitarist Steven Drozd and Ivins (who sported a Ghostbusters T-shirt for the occasion). Meanwhile, Coyne instigated an unlikely feud with the Arcade Fire when he told a Rolling Stone journalist that he thought the Canadian band were “pr—s” who "treated the audience like s—.” Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler later responded on his band’s website with a message in which he hoped that he was less of a "pr—" than someone who would criticize people he didn’t know.

After the jump, Coyne talks about the state-song brouhaha, the Arcade Fire imbroglio, and why you should seriously consider purchasing Steven Drozd’s house.

PSA: The Shin is not the Shins

"At first listen," reads a press release which recently landed in my inbox, "The Shin may sound like your average rocking band from Georgia." Actually, at first glance, "The Shin" sounds like a solo project from James Mercer, lead singer of the Shins.

But wait! Turns out The Shin (no s) is in fact a longstanding band from the Eurasian nation of Georgia that’s about to kick off an American tour. It’s not their fault that their name sounds so much like that other moderately well-known act, either. Evidently "Shin" means "home" in the Georgian language, and they put out their first album way back in 1995, years before Mercer changed his indie-pop band’s name from Flake Music.

So just consider this your daily lesson of "Know your indie sensations from your traditional Georgian fusion troupes." A clip of The Shin’s "Chips on the Water" is below — no word on whether it’ll change your life, but nice stuff, if you like that sort of thing. For comparison, the Shins‘ "Australia" video is after the jump.

'American Idol's' audience is aging: Do guests like Jamie Foxx and Lady GaGa help?

Americanidolgaga_lAmerican Idol undoubtedly became the most popular show on TV because of its cross-generational appeal. But a recent piece in the Los Angeles Times says that appeal may be waning with one coveted demographic in particular: younger viewers.

Though Idol’s ratings are only down ever-so-slightly (a 10% drop from last year), younger viewers seem to be abandoning the show in droves. The median age of an Idol viewer is now 42.9, more than 11 years older than when the show crowned Kelly Clarkson its first winner.

Even more curious, this past Wednesday’s result show netted a slightly higher rating than the Tuesday’s performance episode. When you look at this season’s roster of guests, it’s not hard to spot something of an identity crisis: Lady GaGa (pictured), Kanye West, Jamie Foxx, Miley Cyrus and Flo Rida on one side of the gym; Natalie Cole, Frankie Avalon, Smokey Robinson and Thelma Houston on the other. (Surely these artists appeal to people of all ages, but I implore you to find a teenager who can name a Thelma Houston song, or a 42.9-year-old who knows a GaGa song.) The show has always straddled the line between venerable legends and of-the-moment artists before, but never has it seemed so blatant, or desperate.

So what do these numbers really mean (if anything)? Could it really be that Adam Lambert’s most ardent fans may actually be hordes of mothers who turn flush every time he struts on stage for one of his freak shows, telephone in-hand, ready and waiting to dial on his behalf? (For the record, I mean ‘freak show’ in the best way possible. Really I do.)

The aging Idol viewer could also explain why spunky teenager Allison Iraheta has found a semi-frequent home in the bottom three: younger voters simply do not have her back. They’re not as interested as they were when they texted their hearts out for Jordin Sparks and Carrie Underwood. The show has always imposed an age limit, presumably in an effort to cater to the young folks. Given the show’s aging audience, and the simple fact we live in apost-Susan Boyle world, why not — as my colleague Leah Greenblattsuggested — open up the show up to the over-30?

Time to weigh in, Mixers: Are American Idol’s attempts to stay hip in booking the Kanye’s and GaGa’s of the world enough to gloss over the fact the show still has dated themes like "Disco Night" and "Songs from the Year You Were Born"? What do you think Idol can do to win back younger viewers? Does it need them to stay viable?

No Doubt begin comeback summer on the 'Today Show': Do we care?

Tags:

I was getting ready to come into work this morning (to make beautiful magazine magic for you lot), when the wailing strains of Gwen Stefani beckoned me. No Doubt was back together – and in my living room. (Or, more accurately, on the Today Show to kick off their summer tour.)

Seeing Gwen back in her ska gear Gumbying up a storm, I realized I should be experiencing acute nostalgia: I happened to catch No Doubt in concert in 1995 when they were opening for the Foo Fighters opening for Bush (let’s just take a moment to think about the irony of that pecking order), and I’ve been a fan since. So when they pulled out "Don’t Speak" and dusted off "Spiderwebs" this morning, I guess they were playing to…me. But as my office neighbor Rob said, it was like when Madonna trots out the bondage gear: more than a little inauthentic. In the years since No Doubt, Stefani picked up a family, a glossier sound, and a fashion line that sells shoes for $347. And I like glammy Gwen. But is anyone supposed to believe she could pass for punk these days?

Still, the crowd at Rockefeller Plaza went wild for Gwen and co, so maybe I’m just being hard on my old friends. What do you think? Does the band’s performance this morning have you excited for their tour, and upcoming cameo on Gossip Girl? Or would you, too, like to see Stefani make a sweet escape?

Wilco covers Woody Guthrie for charity: Wall Street fat cats, get out your wallets!

Tags:

In the late ’90s, Wilco recorded a couple of albums with British singer-songwriter Billy Bragg (Mermaid Avenue Volumes I & 2) on which they built songs from lyrics by protest singer Woody Guthrie. This was at a time when the economy was on the rise, Wall Street was bullish and it was only a matter of time before we were all brushing our teeth with liquid gold.

A decade on, the economy is in the toilet and Wall Street confidence has disappeared into the ether. But Wilco are still here! Their new album, the recently christened Wilco (the album), is out June 30. And yesterday they posted on their website a timely new cover of Guthrie’s bitter, sarcastic, "Jolly Banker."

In the grand tradition of Radiohead’s In Rainbows, Jeff Tweedy & co. suggest a range of donations that can be made to the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives in exchange for downloading the track. In fact, if you happen to be "unemployed/underemployed or otherwise broke," they recommend you contribute some money at a later date. If, on the other hand, you happen to be a "banker/hedge fund manager/credit default swap trader," they suggest a minimum donation of $100, which does seem only fair.

Are you a fan of the Mermaid Avenue albums? What do you think of "Jolly Banker"? And how much will you donate?

Leighton Meester exclusive: In the studio with the 'Gossip Girl' star

Leightonmeester_dlEW recently caught up with Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester in the recording studio, where she’s working on her still-unnamed debut album, due this fall (her first single is slated for July). The actress, who’s best known for her bitchy-one liners as Blair Waldorf, says the album will have an electro-pop sound, and she’s working with producers like Kenna (Lupe Fiasco, JoJo) and Polow da Don (The Pussycat Dolls, Fergie). "It’s very pop," she says. "You can listen to it on the radio. You can listen to it in your car. You can dance to it."

Meester offered us an exclusive listen to three of the album’s potential tracks. “Push and Pull” is an elegant anthem about making arelationship work; she says the song “takes my breath away.” On“Almost Perfect,” she takes a break from electro-pop for astripped-down ballad lamenting a lover’s lies. The song ends withMeester bluntly spitting, "F— you." "That was what we call an adlib,"she says. Then there’s the pulsing “Lights Out,”produced by J.R. Rotem (Britney Spears), which has her singing very un-CW things like, "Don’t turn the lightsout/I bet you like to watch." Meester plays coy when it comes to thesubject matter. "Who knows what I’m talking about? Everything is kindain metaphors." Maybe, we ask, she simply wants someone to spoon with? "Or fork." Even so, "there is somewhat of a sexual undertone to a lot of songs," she says. "I’m a grown woman [laughs]."

The 23-year-old actress actually began recording her music without a major-label deal. Some of her early tracks, like a cover of "Bette Davis Eyes," leaked onto the web, but Meester isn’t sure if they’ll make the album. "I’m still figuring it out," she says. "I loved the song and I loved the feel of it. That’s what the feel of the rest of the album is gonna be." One thing’s for certain: it will reveal some intimate details of Meester’s love life. "I’ve been through a lot as far as love," she says. "When I’m singing a song, I picture somebody in particular. A lot of it is to a guy." Which guy? Nice try: Meester won’t spill (the actress had reportedly been dating her GG co-star Sebastian Stan).

It turns out Meester hasloved music from a very young age. "I remember I was in the grocerystore with my mom when I was little and I heard ‘I Will Always LoveYou,’ " she says. "I must have been 3 or 4, and I went, ‘Mom, that mademy back tingle.’ She was like, "That’s what music is supposed to do.’ Iloved it."

Meester, who will also spend her summer hiatus shooting the Single White Female-esque thriller The Roommate, has been inspired by some musical giants. "I really love Madonna, CyndiLauper, and Debbie Harry," says the actress. "Gwen Stefani and Fergie, too. They’re very strong womenand have a completely unique sound." Meester also says she’s been grooving to Ladyhawke and Australian band Empire of the Sun. "I was in Paris and I listened to [their single 'Walking on a Dream']like 40 times a day. I love them." Cobra Starship is another band thatMeester enjoys, and she actually recorded a song, co-written by American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, with the rockers (they’re also shooting a video together). One other person she really wants to work with? Her GG co-star Ed Westwick. "I would love that. I’ve thought about it a lot, so we’ll see. He’s very talented."

Daughtry to debut 'No Surprise' on next Wednesday's 'Idol'

Prepare yourselves: Daughtry, the modern-rock band fronted by American Idol alum and all-around nice guy Chris Daughtry, will perform a brand-new single called "No Surprise" on next Wednesday’s episode of the show that made their singer famous. "No Surprise," which does not appear to be a Radiohead cover (probably ultimately a good thing), will appear on Daughtry’s as-yet-untitled second album, due July 14. Anyone looking forward to hearing the first official follow-up to Daughtry’s megasmash 2006 debut?

Happy Birthday, D'arcy Wretzky of the Smashing Pumpkins! Where the heck are you?

Smashingpumpkinsdarcy_lToday marks the 41st birthday of D’arcy Elizabeth Wretzky: erstwhile Smashing Pumpkins bassist, Michigan native, exalted ’90s alt-chick. (Also, a very happy glad-you-were-born to Tim McGraw, Mary Lou Lord, and Ghostbusters theme-king Ray Parker Jr.; but this post is not about you guys, sorry).

So, D’arcy, have you joined some sort of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Witness Protection Program?? Lord knows Billy Corgan stays busy; Jimmy Chamberlain sounds happy about his side project, and James Iha has moved on with mini-supergroup Tinted Windows. But wherefore la Wretzky?

More than five years ago, Corgan, who once called her “the moral conscious of the band,” posted on his LiveJournal that she was fired back in 1999 “for being a mean-spirited drug addict who refused to get help”; she was replaced by Hole’s Mellisa Auf der Maur, whose stint was short-lived, as the band broke up soon after.

In the interim, however, we’ve heard n’ary a peep from D’arcy, and news-Google searches over the past half-decade reveal naught but the birthday date, a lawsuit she filed against Virgin Records for unlawfully selling Pumpkins ringtones, and this godawful photo from a plastic surgery site.

What other once-revered rockers have fallen clear off the planet, Music Mixers? I know you’ve got a list…
