T.I. duet with Mary J. Blige leaks days before he begins his prison sentence

Tagged:

Multiplatinum rapper T.I., born Clifford Harris Jr., has until noon on May 26 to begin serving his year-and-a-day sentence for a federal weapons conviction, but his farewell-for-now anthem has already been leaked: the song "Don’t Forget," a soulful downtempo duet with Mary J.Blige, hit the internet yesterday; the pair is rumored to be filming a video for the track at an undisclosed location before Harris heads to prison.

The song will appear on the upcoming re-release of last year’s Paper Trails, which will also reportedly feature a collaboration with Fall Out Boy and a Kanye West guest spot that was previously scrapped. Check out "Don’t Forget" below and tell us, will you be buying Trails‘ re-up, or is his goodbye a good riddance?

Tarantino reveals 'Inglourious Basterds' soundtrack details

Tagged:

Quentin Tarantino is a filmmaker known for his unlikely or obscure but often brilliant musical choices (Pulp Fiction, anyone? Reservoir Dogs?) on screen. The Cannes press kit for his World War II epic, Inglourious Basterds, seems to indicate that he’ll rely heavily on Ennio Morricone’s score, but there are a couple of interesting picks.

Among them? Billy Preston’s title song for the 1972 Jim Brown-starring exploitation movie Slaughter and David Bowie’s "Cat People (Putting Out The Fire)," which originally appeared on the soundtrack of director Paul Schrader’s 1982 Cat People remake. Below you can check out both "Cat People" and the trailer for Slaughter: "Jim Brown is Slaughter! It’s not only his name, it’s his business!" Classic stuff.

So, Music Mixers, does this news whet your appetite for Basterds? And what’s your favorite Tarantino musical moment?

New Coldplay live album: Download it free right now

If you’re going to any of the dates on Coldplay’s current Viva la Vida tour – which starts today in West Palm Beach, Florida, before winding all through the States and ending up back in Tampa on September 9 — you’ll be gifted with the band’s new live album, LeftRightLeftRightLeft, for your trouble.

Or: You could stay right where you are on the couch (cubicle, kitchen floor, bathtub…) and download the whole thing for free just by clicking here. It’s available until the band plays their final show of 2009 — their website currently says that’s September 19 at London’s Wembley Stadium, but who knows.

So tell us, readers: Will you be collecting your physical copy in person at a show this summer? Or keeping it between you and your laptop? In the meantime, I leave you with my own favorite Chris Martin moment– playing himself as a fantastically insufferable rock star ("Gwyneth’s making drumsticks!") on Ricky Gervais’s Extras:

Bat For Lashes: Music's next 'it' girl?

Batforlashes_l1When I saw indie alt-pop songstress Bat For Lashes perform "Daniel" on Letterman earlier this month, I was under the false impression she was a brand-new up-and-comer. Not so. A Brit by the name of Natasha Kahn, the singer is already on her second album (the first, Fur and Gold, dropped way back in 2006 to acclaim here and elsewhere). We even streamed an exclusive mixtape from her latest album, Two Suns, so my obliviousness is no one’s fault but my own. But no matter. She has my full, undivided attention now.

A previously unreleased leftover track from her Two Suns album, called "Wilderness," is now available to download on iTunes. It’s gorgeous. Her music is like a mixture of the pastoral beauty of a Fleet Foxes or Bon Iver song aided by the voice of Bjork or Cat Power, with the help of piano, strings, synths, and other assorted atmospherics. Those elements all shine brightly on "Wilderness." If quirky-edgy talents like Feist and Regina Spektor can find as much mainstream success as they have, why not Bat For Lashes? While her latest single, "Daniel," probably won’t be her "Fidelity" or "1234" (she’s too somber for that), I can still see her following in the footsteps of her fellow avant- garde singer-songwriters and enrapturing a more mainstream audience. What do you think of Bat For Lashes? Do you agree she’s headed for bigger and better things? Listen to both "Wilderness" and "Daniel" after the jump and weigh in.

Happy Birthday, Brian Eno!

Tagged:

Light 61 candles for Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno, Music Mixers: the onetime Roxy Music member, recent helmer of Coldplay’s Grammy-gorging Viva la Vida, and creator of the six-second start-up music-sound of the Windows 95 operating system (really!), who is often referred to as "the father of ambient music" — in fact, he coined the very phrase — was born on this day in 1948.

To celebrate, I suggest donning blackout shades and coccooning oneself in a blanket made of baby-marmoset fur while listening to "Deep Blue Day." (You probably know it from the infamous Trainspotting scene where Ewan McGregor goes diving for opiates in a filthy pub toilet turned dreamy aquatic wonderland, but let’s not go to there first thing in morning, yeah?)

Or, pull out some of the masterful albums he’s produced or co-produced (U2′s Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, Talking Heads’ More Songs About Buildings and Food). Myself, I will be interpretive-dancing at my desk to his 1973 glam classic "Baby’s On Fire," as covered so memorably below in the glammiest of faux rock biopics, 1998′s Velvet Goldmine (what is UP with Ewan McGregor and Brian Eno? Wonder twins!):

Kanye West really wants you to like Mr. Hudson: Do you?

Kanyewestmrhudson_lWhen Kanye West tells you to like something, you listen. Or at least Ido. The man’s got a pretty reliable track record when it comes tospotting talent: Common, John Legend, Kid Cudi, to name a few. Yeezy iscurrently conducting the hype train for his latest find:British pop-soul singer Mr. Hudson (whose first name is Ben). Westsigned the Brit to his G.O.O.D. Music label, asked him to collaborateon a number of 808′s & Heartbreak tracks (including "Paranoid"),and has been the captainof the Mr. Hudson cheerleading squad ever since. Since West is obviouslynostranger to hyperbole, as he’s already lavished praise on him like "he couldbeone of the most important artists of his generation."

With all the hype, it’s easy to lose track of the music. Thankfully,West has finally premiered Mr. Hudson’s first track off his forthcomingStraight No Chaser album, scheduled to drop in August. The tune, called"Supernova," definitely shows promise, sounding like a Euro-synthpopanthem by way of the Polyphonic Spree. The song’s slow-burn hip-hopbeat builds nicely toward the auto-tuned rhymes from West himself, whoof course guests on the track. And even though I’m sure Jamie Lidell could wipe the floor with him in a sing-off, Mr. Hudson isn’t really a true soul singer. He’s instead got a multi-faceted tone to his voice that’s transcends several different genres of music. While declarations like "one of the mostimportant artists" always tend to turn me off (I’m talking aboutyou, Janelle Monae), I’m definitely digging Mr. Hudson enough to keep an eye onhis album. What do you all think? Does the strange-bedfellow pairing ofKanye West and Mr. Hudson intrigue you, or does the hype turn you off? What do you think of "Supernova"?

Anvil to rock Kimmel couch tonight

Tagged:

It doesn’t seem so long ago that Anvil were a Where-are-they-now?-file-dwelling Canadian heavy metal band. But the recent, absolutely excellent, documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil has raised the band’s profile enough for Jimmy Kimmel to invite founding members  Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner on his show tonight. Meanwhile, Kimmel musical guests are Airborne Toxic Event.

If you have yet to experience the metal-tastic majesty of Anvil! The Story of Anvil (see trailer below) please do so as soon as possible. Whatever your taste in music, I promise you won’t regret it. And if you have seen the film feel free drop us a line to tell me why I’m right.

Brian Williams has 99 problems but his musical taste ain't one

Tagged:

Brianwilliamshov_lEarlier this week we noted anchorman Brian William’s unlikely quizzing of Deer Tick on his new music-minded msnbc.com web series Bri Tunes. Now Rolling Stone has posted an interview with the NBC news anchor, which you can read here. In the piece Williams recalls how as a teenager he "stalked" a then new musical outfit called Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band and that recently he listened to Jay-Z’s "My First Song" just before hitting the airwaves ("I was tempted to go on and say"Ch’boy!," but I didn’t. It was close.")

Williams also admits that Bri Tunes could seem "incredibly dilettantish." What do you you think? Is it behooving of a news anchor to be cranking up the Hova? And how long before we get to see Jay-Z hosting Meet The Press?

John Mayer's pot song: 'Who Says I Can't Get Stoned?'

Tagged:

Los Angeles John Mayer fans got a double thrill this week. The singer-songwriter/serial ladies man not only put on a surprise show (announced via his Twitter) at Hotel Cafe, but he also unveiled a brand new song. A brand new song about his love for smoking weed! After Mayer asked his crowd to pipe down — heh heh, pipe down — he serenaded them with his sincere tune about just wanting to get a little baked. Musically, the song, "Who Says I Can’t Get Stoned?," doesn’t feel far off from any other Mayer tune. As a matter of fact, replace the word "stoned" with "love" and you’ve got yourself a Grammy nomination, John.

What do you think Music Mixers? Do you agree with Mayer’s sentiment? Or should the song go up in smoke? Check out the video below and share your thoughts:
