I thought this was a perfect modern interpretation of a classic. Plus this song proves that John Mayer is a great guitarist especially the solo.
You know, maybe one of these days people will actually understand what true talent is. And by that I mean John Mayer and his blues licks. I used to HATE him when I thought he was nothing but a pop icon that played guitar just to win the ladies with his panty wetting songs. Then I secretly bought the John Mayer Trio album, and by secretly I mean I literally hid it under my arm while I walked to the check out in my local music store. A blues trio… from a pop star… I really had to hear it. Once I did I was hooked like cocaine to a dead rockstar. He’s played with clapton, BB, Buddy Guy, and more blues icons. And for those of you reading this that are raging on John mayer and don’t know who George “Buddy” Guy is… then maybe YOU are the one that needs a lesson in music and not John Mayer. Buddy Guy influenced Hendrix, Clapton, AC DC, and many more… So maybe, just maybe, he knows a little more than you do about criticism of music. John Mayer is slowly becoming a guitar god.
I was really excited when I heard what song they were doing. I love the original version of this song. I thought it was a nice twist on an already great song.I have been a John Mayer fan for a long time and I never stop being impressed with his live performances. I was expecting him to do one of the songs I have already seen him do a hundred times. I thought it was great! loved it!
Are you off your f*cking rocker? That cover was an amazing display of fantastic guitar playing. You should be ashamed for being so closed minded and musically challenged. Too bad your the only one that thinks only of JM’s hits. He is a talented musician that won’t get pigeon holed into playing the same thing over and over. He rocks, and clearly you don’t
Are you off your rocker? That was an amazing cover of a classic song. Johm Mayer is an over the top talented musician that won’t get pigeon holed into playing just his hits over and over. He rocks, my friend and clearly you do not. Your closed mind won’t get you anywhere.
You wouldn’t know good music if it slapped you across the face and said “I’m good music!”. It’s artists like him that are re-introducing younger people to great older music…Not just hip hop junk and this awful screaming music people call “rock”
people are awfully dense…yes this would be a strange song to cover and just perform on any other late night show. but in the context of that night, it being conan’s first week and having just moved to la, it made perfect sense as a welcoming song.
i know this may sound patronizing, but was it really that hard to understand?
Good point Ben!!! I was just about to say all that..
Bullet proof glass? Lmao, immediatly disreguarded anything that comes out of your mouth becuase of that. The glass was their to block the sound from being picked up on the mics the kids were using… which im sure were cranked way up over the guitars.
I’m not even a real John Mayer fan, but I was watching Conan and saw it…. I thought it was tight. Hell I’ve listened to it everyday since, it’s a clever song to cover and he did a damn good job. Whoever wrote this, never heard of him, needs to stop being so old.
The person critiquing this performance is a terrible judge; I thought this was one of the best live performances I’ve seen on a talk show in a very long time. John Mayer obviously loves music and is amazingly talented at what he does.
I think it was amazing, John made it his own, which he is famous for with other covers. I have read that people say he does to many covers, but I think John Mayer, in his own way is paying tribute to great musicians of the past with his covers. He always adds his signature guitar and vocal phrasing to create a unique interpretation. I was blown away by this performance and it is why I am a fan. John Mayer never worries about what people will think, just goes out and brings what he loves.
Hey, you people that didn’t like it, to each his own, but I thought it was fabulous. I really, really wish he’d release it on iTunes. You’ve got the wonderful union of an old song by the M&P’s, a roughly 30 year old Mayer, and a group of tweener kids. Talk about bridging generations. Even if you don’t like Mayer, give him his due. I’m certainly no expert, but I think he’s a better player now than he was 4 or 5 years ago, and i didn’t think he was bad then. He’s still challenging himself, continuing to explore, and try new things. I hope he stays with it, and wish him the best of luck.
Some claim its “over the top.” Not I, F-ing ingenuis John. A little Jimi, with a whole lotta SRV, your growing up before our eyes. Stick to your influences, and awaf from the fluff, gravity. etc…. Blown Away
