Daniel Merriweather: Will he break big in America?

Tags:

You probably know him best as the man who dared, along with producer/celebu-DJ Mark Ronson, to take on the Smiths' 1987 mope-supreme classic "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" — and actually kind of succeeded.

Now the blue-eyed-soul singer from Down Under is readying the release of his debut, Love & War, in America this fall (the album bowed this week at no. 2 in the UK).

Two singles are already a top-5 hits across the pond, and the album reportedly contains a duet with Grammy darling Adele, as well as contributions from the Dap Kings, the suave, finger-snapping backup crew for both Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones.

Stream "Red" below — featuring offspring all-stars Sean Lennon and Harper Simon (Paul's son) on guitar — and tell us if you think Merriweather has what it takes to make it in the States; can Ronson, who produced Love & War, do for him what he did for Winehouse and Lily Allen on their breakout albums?

This album is not coming out until fall in the U.S? Wow, that’s too bad, I have had it for 2 weeks and it’s really good. He should do pretty well in the U.S. he has Mark Ronson producing, smooth catchy tunes, and the duet with Adele “Water and A Flame” is gorgeous, that should be the first single to help break him in the U.S.

I picked up the album on import already since iTunes has only had the Wale featured single, “Change” since March. I’d love to see Daniel break big here as his cover of “Stop Me” from mark Ronson’s album is still one of the top played songs on my iPod. For the dance music fiends, seek out the Moto Blanco Club Mix of “Red”. It turns this ballad into a great dance track without losing the emotion in Daniel’s voice! Lets hope that SONY/BMG decides to give Daniel a proper U.S. release!

Alright Leah Greenblat. The album “reportedly” contains a duet with Adele? Seriously? Really? You couldn’t just look at a track list or get the album and realize that, in fact, Merriweather does duet with Adele?
At any rate, I have the CD and it’s excellent. Although Merriweather SHOULD be a huge star stateside on the strength of this CD, sadly my bet is that he will not. As excellent as this CD is, my guess is that it’s all a bit “too british” for American radio.

This man’s voice is incredible. The Red Moto Blanco mixes are outstanding. There’s no reason for Merriweather not to be successful in the USA other than poor management and or promotion. To Tylar – Don’t be so smug. taking into account your use of the word “stateside” I’m presuming you are in the UK. You don’t need to be so snotty just because you’re fortunate enough to be in his home country where the cd is already out. This writer obviously doesn’t have it yet, hence the “reportedly”, and is only alerting people to it’s coming release in the USA. Careful, you’re giving “the ugly American” a run for his money.
