Their new album Ursa Major doesn’t drop until August 18, but because you Music Mixers lead a totally charmed life, you can hear Third Eye Blind’s new single “Don’t Believe a Word” right here, right now. The ’90s vets, presumed dead by many, have, it seems, merely been regrouping; by playing on college campuses across the nation, they’ve cultivated a fresh fanbase whose memories of “Jumper” may not transcend its use in the recent Yes Man, but who love to doot-doot-doot all the same. (Believe the hype: a 3EB show at this year’s SXSW was not only surprisingly well-attended, but the roar that shook the crowd when Stephan Jenkins asked his friends to step back from that ledge rivaled anything Metallica had produced in the same Stubbs backyard the night before.)
So go ahead and press play, then tell us, Mixers: how’s it gonna be? Are you ready for Third Eye Blind’s return? And is “Don’t Believe a Word” a worthy successor to such irresistable past gems like “Semi-Charmed Life” and “Never Let You Go”? (Yes, I both bought and enjoyed Blue, okay?)

This song, like their third album “Out of the Vein” demonstrates how important Kevin Cadogan was to Third Eye Blind. Without him their songs seem indulgent and unfocused.
summer of 99, my senior year (yes i’m a little oldish.) My first concert experience, third eye blind with vertical horizon and splender. I don’t know if band was having off night but it sounded as if stephen jenkins could not sing at all, like they were total studio bands. Thankfully I did not assume this was true for all bands and I have see some amazingn shows since, about 30 more lol.
Actually Brent, I thought Out of the Vein was excellent – you have to be in a certain mood for each of their albums and I definitely have an Out of the Vein Mood.
That said, I realize they released this single in order to capitalize on the success of Non-Dairy Creamer, and that’s fine, but there are several MUCH better (also nonpolitical) songs on Ursa Major. I just hope people don’t write them off before the really excellent stuff comes out.
Awesome. First concert ever was 3eb(w/ Tonic) in ’99, and all albums since then have been fantastic. Looking forward to Ursa Major.
I recently saw them live and thought they were horrid in a live setting. I feel they are a much better studio group than live group. However the rest of the crowd sure seemed to love the show.
I think this is a good 3EB song, but not one of their best. I think this fits in with the indulgent and unfocused “Blue” album. I think “Out of the Vein” is their best album. The problem with music today is how any band not named Coldplay, Radiohead, or U2 ever get a chance to grow their audience and get recognition. Bands from the 90′s are still making great music today, but they are not marketed because what is there to market without a video to push or an album to buy. We’ve created a disconnected society and we will never connect to classic tunes the way our parents and older siblings did. Long Live 3EB!
I think it is clear that a lot of people who comment on don’t know anything about the artists they read about. Brent obviously isn’t aware that Out of the Vein was the bands most critically celebrated album, it just didn’t do very well because their record label did not hold up their part in advertising.
And Nate obviously doesn’t know anything about live concerts as it is 3EB’s live show that made them what they were. They made their big time debut opening up for Oasis and were called out for an encore after Oasis had played!
I for one am greatly looking forward to the release of Ursa Major, Ursa Minor and every Third Eye Blind release for the end of time.
funny. third eye blind is one of the bands i think does the most justice to their albums in a live show. for me, live shows are not meant to sound exactly like an album (i’d be upset if they did) and part of what makes a concert special is getting to hear a song you love take on a new life. that said, i’ve always felt that hearing 3eb live proves to be an awesome, inspiring experience. you can hear the foundation of the band that exists in the studio, but they just take on a whole new energy. they’re great musicians, all, and that stephan has pipes for days.
perhaps i’ve just been lucky at the shows i’ve seen. but i’d prefer to believe my shows have been the indicative of the rule and not the exception.
I say they’re gonna make a comeback from the 90′s like none other.
So censored! Dammit the uncensored is so much better and funnier.
I can’t wait for their big comeback! The single sounds great.
AMAZING! When’s the album out?
