'Purplish Rain': Twilight Singers, Apollonia, Of Montreal, more pay tribute to Prince

Tagged: ,

APOLLONIA-purple-rain_l Twenty-five years ago this month, a classic album touched down on Earth in Minneapolis. Perhaps the most classic of new classics, even. I'm talking, of course, about Prince's untouchably awesome Purple Rain. Spin magazine is celebrating this momentous anniversary by putting together a tribute set titled Purplish Rain (ha), featuring track-by-track covers of the entire original album by hip folks like the Twilight Singers, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Of Montreal, Fol Chen, and more. Spin readers will be able to download the whole thing for free on June 23; in the meantime, the mag is currently streaming a cover of "When Doves Cry" by Greg Dulli's band the Twilight Singers online. That cover happens to feature additional vocals by actual Purple Rain co-star Apollonia, which is pretty much too cool for words. Head over to Spin's site to hear how "When Doves Cry" turned out and read the rest of the tracklist — then let us know how you think Purplish Rain measures up to your favorite Prince covers.

Uncle Kracker's 'Smile': Hear it exclusively here

Uncle-Kracker_l Did you miss Uncle Kracker? The rapper-turned-country crooner has stayed busy in the five years since his last record, even notching a co-writer credit on one of last year’s biggest singles (his old pal Kid Rock’s “All Summer Long”). This September, he’ll return for real with an album called Happy Hour, and the Music Mix is pleased to debut that album’s lead single, “Smile.” In all honesty, I’ve personally never been Uncle K’s hugest fan (no offense to those who are), but I could see “Smile” becoming a seriously major hit with a hook like that. Give this excerpt a listen below and see whether you agree.

Bonnaroo '09 Thursday: Janelle Monae and dance rock in the rain

Tagged:

Remember that one time when I thought because I bought rain boots today it wasn’t going to rain at Bonnaroo? Yeah. Good times. It rained at Bonnaroo today, Mixers, and then it absolutely let loose for about ten minutes in the 10 o’clock hour, nearly drowning out poor The Low Anthem. They were minding their own business, shambolically folking about in That Tent with their harmonicas and their zithers… and then they were straining to be heard over the gallons of water drumming on the roof. Worse, I don’t think today’s rain is anything compared to what the festival gods have in store for us this weekend. I think that was just a tease for the big show. I think I’m gonna need a bigger boat.

But if weather can serve as a metaphor — and by god, I think it can! — Thursday at the ‘Roo was really just a tease for the deluge to come. Mud aside, the scene is the same as it’s been my last two years in these Tennessee hills, and thanks to the absence of the Delta Spirit (scratched due to travel disaster), I got the chance to do some early meandering, greeting the ferris wheel and the Silent Disco and the 47 batik-print sundress stands and the giant fountain like old friends. A companion commented on the kids in attendance, and how fresh-faced they all seemed compared to the kids he’s used to seeing at European rock festivals; I reminded him this was day one, and we’ve quite a long way to go. Fresh-faced on day one can just as easily mean passed-out-under-a-recyling-bin by day three. And if it keeps raining, anyone who passes out is probably going to need a snorkel.

After the jump: Pictures and words about Hockey, Portugal. The Man, The Knux, The Low Anthem, Passion Pit, Zac Brown Band, and Thursday’s all-star, Janelle Monae (above)…

Music Mix saves Bonnaroo!!

Tagged:

Greetings from central Tennessee, Mixers, where I arrived this afternoon to begin the annual spiritual journey that is Bonnaroo. When I drove into town, it was pouring down rain, and weather advisories were warning of severe thunderstorms. As of ten minutes ago, when I left the Tractor Supply Co. with my new rain boots (pictured) and a $5 gimme cap, the skies could not be more blue. Had I not bought those rain boots, however, I’m quite certain I would have needed to row my way to the Janelle Monae set that starts at 5:45. I have saved Bonnaroo! Thank me later.

Anyway. Hi! I’m here! I’m psyched to see Springsteen, and the Beasties, and Elvis Costello, and the return of prodigal sons Phish, and two people are currently having very loud sex in the hotel room next to mine. Check out the schedule, bust out the bong, and tell me how I should spend my next four days. Into the breach!

Daniel Merriweather: Will he break big in America?

Tagged:

You probably know him best as the man who dared, along with producer/celebu-DJ Mark Ronson, to take on the Smiths' 1987 mope-supreme classic "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" — and actually kind of succeeded.

Now the blue-eyed-soul singer from Down Under is readying the release of his debut, Love & War, in America this fall (the album bowed this week at no. 2 in the UK).

Two singles are already a top-5 hits across the pond, and the album reportedly contains a duet with Grammy darling Adele, as well as contributions from the Dap Kings, the suave, finger-snapping backup crew for both Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones.

Stream "Red" below — featuring offspring all-stars Sean Lennon and Harper Simon (Paul's son) on guitar — and tell us if you think Merriweather has what it takes to make it in the States; can Ronson, who produced Love & War, do for him what he did for Winehouse and Lily Allen on their breakout albums?

Aqua goes 'Back to the 80s': Who's coming with?

Well, it's official. Thanks to this just-released video for ''Back to the 80s," the new single from "Barbie Girl" creators Aqua, my excitement for '90s band reunions is no more. I'm looking forward to Blink-182 and No Doubt's summer tours. I'm totally okay with the LFO reunion tour that's launching in July. But really — Aqua? What's next, Chumbawamba?

If we can get past the fact that the song is essentially a dance version of Bowling for Soup's ''1985'' (which I'm not sure I can — how many novelty '80s nostalgia songs do we really need?), the video is just a mess of laser backgrounds, hair band costumes, and leopard print. And, as the astute Simon Vozick-Levinson pointed out to me in an email, why is a late-'90s act singing about the '80s? Shouldn't they be reminiscing about platform sneakers and scrunchies instead?

Take a gander below, and tell me: are you as affronted by this audio/visual travesty as I am, Music Mixers? Or are you on board the Aqua reunion train? (Note: If you did, in fact, enjoy this video, are you also holding out for an OMC/Eiffel 65/Len/Vengaboys resurrection?)

Bret Michaels' broken face: Photos!

Bret-michaels-tony-injuries_l After Bret Michaels' mishap at Sunday's Tony Awards, the Internet was chortling away at the Poison lead singer and Rock of Love star's nasty accident (he broke his nose and needed a few stitches for a cut lip.) Now we're getting to see exactly just how injured Michaels was: he's posted pictures of himself "following the incident at the Tony Awards" on his MySpace.

Apparently Michaels is miffed that the Tonys aren't taking this all more seriously. A spokesperson for the singer issued a statement today saying: "I find it surprising that a Tony spokesperson would brush off this incident with a comment stating 'Mr. Michaels missed his mark' with no mention of concern for his condition." Also: "I feel had this incident happened to Liza Minnelli, Dolly Parton or Elton John, the Tonys would have at least issued a letter of concern."

What do you think, Music Mixers? Now that you've seen the pictures, is this nothing more than a minor mishap, or does Michaels have a right to be upset?

'I'm on a Boat' a cappella: Even funnier than the original?

So, the LOL connoisseurs over at Videogum have unearthed a clip of an earnest young a cappella group covering the Lonely Island's classic seafaring shanty "I'm on a Boat" in a stairwell. Videogum seems to believe that this activity makes the kids in the clip "nerds." True? Yes, technically, I suppose that translating Andy Samberg raps into collegiate a cappella form is deeply nerdy on several levels. Yet I feel compelled to point out that there is NOTHING about this clip that is not so, so awesome. These nerds know their material. They are hilarious! And besides, isn't the whole point of the Lonely Island's music to be as ridiculously dorky as possible? I thank Videogum for bringing this wonderful clip to my attention, but its creators ought to be celebrated, not mocked. Grab your nautical-themed pashmina afghan and a flute of Santana DVX, take a look below (NSFW language, beware), and let us know if you agree.

Kanye West and Lady Gaga to tour together: Clash of the (Ego) Titans?

Lady-gaga-kanye-west-tour_l Attention, live music fans: the most mind-blowingly self-indulgent tour ever is about to hit a stadium near you. Kanye announced today (on The View, no less!) that he and Lady Gaga will team up for a co-headlining tour later this year.

While I'm trying to decide whether this will be the most amazing spectacle ever or the most cringe-worthy display of ego to hit the stage since Mr. G. The Musical, I've got to give props to give whoever convinced the two most openly self-obsessed musicians in pop music to share the stage for an entire show.

No word yet on what the stage collaboration will entail, but maybe we'll see Gaga sport some shutter shades (or is that so 2007?) or 'Ye rock the leotard-with-shoulder pad look (so early '09?). West has already semi-collaborated with Gaga, using an acoustic version of ''Pokerface'' on Kid Cudi's NSFW-ish ''I Make Her Say.''

Based on that song alone, I'd say the musical aspect of the show will be the hotness. I admire the two stars for consistently trying to outdo themselves, and with Gaga's Warholian aspirations and West's sometimes-NSFW envelope-pushing, the show will surely be visually stunning, too.

What's your verdict on the Kanye/Gaga pairing? Innovative extravaganza, megalomaniacal curiosity, or little of both?

Lynda Carter sings!

Add Lynda Carter to the list of stars from my childhood now releasing jazz-vocal albums. Last month my colleague Leah Greenblatt told you about Molly Ringwald's appearance on pianist/composer Peter Smith's CD, Here It Comes. And this week, Wonder Woman herself drops a new record called At Last.

This isn't a new endeavor for Carter; she's been performing at cabaret clubs for years. And while her voice lacks the smoky quality of a Diana Krall, she's got a smooth tone and pussycat delivery that's very well-suited to standards like "You Send Me" or "Come Rain or Come Shine."

You can check out her take on "The Way You Look Tonight" on her "Lynda Carter Sings" website. Will At Last be your new cocktail-party background music soundtrack? Or do you prefer Carter in her Wonder bustier and patriotic power-panties?

Look! Even back then, she had the music in her:
