T-Pain joins the CMT Music Awards lineup: Huh?!

T-pain-taylor-swift_l Some people might be surprised by today's announcement that Auto-Tune autocrat T-Pain will be part of the CMT Music Awards next Tuesday. Not me. "Why exactly would the CMT Awards organizers feel that a veritable who's who of country stars like Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Martina McBride, Toby Keith, and Brad Paisley was missing…T-Pain?", you ask. Well, I'm not even sure that the CMT powers-that-be had a choice in the matter. Ever since reading about how T-Pain waltzed onstage uninvited during Jay-Z's live debut of "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" last weekend, I'm assuming that's just how that guy rolls. Hey, just because T-Pain shows up at a totally incongruous event doesn't mean anyone asked him to be there!

Okay, just kidding. T-Pain is a very fun musician, and I am sure that his unique joie de vivre will make this broadcast that much more enjoyable to watch. He certainly makes more sense than fellow presenters like Bill O'Reilly and Luke Wilson, who aren't even singers. And maybe this explains why Taylor Swift tweeted on Monday about being in the studio with T-Pain? (Or maybe not.) Anyway, what do you think? Does T-Pain's involvement make you more or less interested in tuning in for the CMT Music Awards?

Thao and Justin Power with the Portland Cello Project: A Music Mix Pick

Tagged:

Thao-portland-cello_l Bewitching alt-folk outfit Thao and the Get Down Stay Down released one of the most slept-on little gems of last year on Kill Rock Stars, We Brave Bee Stings And All; if you missed it, buy it now — or commit a little less and just begin by streaming the excellent "Bag of Hammers" here.

Today, Thao Nguyen's collaboration with Justin Power and the Portland Cello Project (an ace group of rotating cellists who take on everything from Britney's "Toxic" to the Dandy Warhols and post-modern Estonian composer Arvo Part in their one-off performances) hits stores; and lo, we have a song for you!

Stream below, while Thao herself tells us about the track: "I wrote 'Tallymarks' years ago," she says, "and have since revisited it several times with various instrumentation and even more varying results. When the opportunity arose to re-record it with The Portland Cello Project, I took it, of course, because I had great faith they would rejuvenate and reshape it in a way I have craved but have not been capable of, not just because I don't play cello.

"They give it gravity without sentiment and fullness without artifice. And there are so many of them and their instruments are bigger than mine so I had to let them do whatever they wanted."

If you get your copy directly from KRS, you get three bonus Justin Timberlake tracks (sample "Cry Me a River," currently streaming on their MySpace), along with "Tallymarks," a kicky little cover of Pantera's "Mouth for War" (you think we're joking), and some other good stuff. But tell us what you think below — did "Tallymarks" make you get up and/or stay down?

Chris Brown has NOT resurfaced on a Maino track: Rumor control

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Has Chris Brown just released his first new music since he allegedly battered then-girlfriend Rihanna in February? That would be a big deal — if it were true. But “Don’t Be Scared,” which has been making the rounds online this week, is not a new Chris Brown song, folks. It’s a song by Brooklyn rapper Maino, with a short, repetitive hook that appears to be sung by Brown. A rep for Maino tells me that the hook is actually a sample taken from Brown’s appearance on David Banner’s 2008 single “Get Like Me”, not a newly recorded vocal. (You can hear the original lines at around 2:16 in the “Get Like Me” video.) What’s more, Maino’s rep adds that this is “an old record” that isn’t even slated to appear on the rapper’s upcoming debut album, If Tomorrow Comes… So there’s really nothing “new” or newsworthy about Chris Brown’s contribution to this tune.

Check out “Don’t Be Scared” below if you like — it’s not a bad song. But it’s not Chris Brown’s public reappearance, either. Not even close.

Dave Matthews Band tops the albums chart with 'GrooGrux King'

Dave-matthews-band_l Dave Matthews Band fans are a loyal sort, and sure enough, 424,000 of them showed up to buy Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King last week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's the third-biggest debut we've seen so far this year, and it proved more than enough to topple Eminem's two-week reign atop the Billboard 200 chart. Still, I'm sure this feels like a bittersweet moment for some of those who are mourning the tragic loss of DMB saxophonist LeRoi Moore last year.

Plenty of other new albums made dents in this week's albums chart. 311's Uplifter hit No. 3 with 60,000 sold. Chickenfoot's self-titled debut made it to No. 6 with 49,000, conclusively answering the question of just how big the collected fan bases of Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony, and Chad Smith are. Taking Back Sunday showed up at No. 7 with 48,000 copies sold of New Again. Rancid took No. 11 with 33,000 copies sold of Let the Dominoes Fall — not bad at all, but a shadow of what their one-time pop-punk compatriots Green Day have been selling lately. Elvis Costello landed at No. 13 with 28,000 copies sold of Secret, Profane & Sugarcane. And Hannah Montana co-star Mitchel Musso squeaked into the Top 20 at No. 19 with 20,000 copies sold of his self-titled debut.

What do you think of this week's chart results? Any surprises or disappointments? Have at it below.

UPDATE: After this post was published, Nielsen SoundScan updated its data to reflect additional data received from a retailer, resulting in slightly different chart positions for a few albums. Chickenfoot's debut actually sold 52,000, putting it at No. 4 (not No. 6). That meant that Green Day moved down to No. 5 and Miley Cyrus got bumped to No. 6. All other sales totals and chart positions in the Top 20 remain unchanged.

Gwen Stefani possibly confirms her solo music was crap; hopes her kid doesn't turn out to be a 'freak'

Filed under: News and tagged:

Gwen-stefani_l Gwen Stefani apparently did not take the advice of her most-famous No Doubt hit when talking to Elle for their July women-in-music cover story (on stands June 15). Quite the opposite, in fact: The platinum-coiffed singer offered some curiously candid soundbites on dynamics within the band, her new life as a mother to two genetically-gifted sons with Gavin Rossdale, and may have also confirmed her two solo albums were totally phony. Check these out:

Gwen on motherhood (via Elle.com):
"It’s one thing when you have an infant, butwhen you have this two-or three-year-old going, ‘Mommy, what’s thedeal?’ it’s harder. Kingston’s whole thing is, ‘I need, I need.’ He isinsane right now. We’re just hoping for the best and that he’s notgoing to turn out to be a freak, but we’ll see.”

Gwen on the band (via the inquisitr.com):
“I always referred to No Doubt as a marriage, because that’s what it’s like to be together for so long and go through what we’ve been through. I can’t really have that relationship with them anymore. My priorities are always going to be my husband and my family now. That’s a huge, huge thing.”

Gwen on songwriting (via MTV.com):
"I just feel very in between at the moment. Like in my cocoon waiting to blossom…I'm so screwed.I might never be able to write another song…I want so badly towrite a record. I want to make every other songwriter jealous. But it'sjust not happening right now."

Gwen on her solo work (via MTV.com):
"I just did the circuit. You write with all the same people ChristinaAguilera writes with. And the music's very programmed anddone in this very patchwork way. But it was so fun. I felt like I wasplaying a character."

While it's understandable baby-mama-hood has changed her life entirely (though maybe not to the extent of robbing her of her songwriting abilities), it is fascinating to hear her put her solo career in context. To her credit, both albums — Love, Angel, Music, Baby and The Sweet Escape — spawned a plethora of radio hits, and the former, lest we forget, helped launch the phrase "Hollaback Girl" into this generation's lexicon.

Regardless, the full interview is likely to drum up even more publicity for No Doubt's reunion (currently underway), much more so than that blah Adam and Ants cover. One would think not being able to write songs would throw a kink in that new No Doubt album though, right?

What do you think, Mixers? Which Gwen do you prefer — solo Gwen, or No Doubt Gwen? Are you nervous, excited or indifferent about the long-in-the-works next ND record?

Wyclef Jean jumps on the anti-Auto-Tune bandwagon with 'Mr. Auto-Tune'

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Wyclef-Jean_l-1 Jay-Z wasn't the first person to bash Auto-Tune, and he won't be the last, either. In an eerie coincidence (?), Wyclef Jean has dropped his own song satirizing the ubiquitous studio effect just days after Jay's "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)." "Mr. Auto-Tune," streaming now at Wyclef's blog, is all about how, in Wyclef's opinion, Auto-Tune enables talentless hacks to pretend they can sing. Tell 'em why you're mad, Clef: "Listen to me now/I think you got it confused/You gotta have skills before you turn on the Auto-Tune/So whether you wanna be a rapper or a singer/If you gonna use the vocoder, be an innovator!"

Leaving aside the fact that vocoders and Auto-Tune are two totally different technologies — c'mon, Wyclef! — the case made in "Mr. Auto-Tune" has one critical flaw: "Mr. Auto-Tune," itself, is way more annoying than most Auto-Tuned hits. (Not easy!) Maybe that's the point, since this is a parody of Auto-Tune's excesses, but you know what? I have no desire to ever listen to a song this irritating again. Also, for some reason "Mr. Auto-Tune" is a duet with Nick Cannon, which equals instant delete in my book.

But maybe I'm being too harsh. Check out "Mr. Auto-Tune" over at Wyclef's blog if you must, and speak up: What do you think of the sudden upsurge in anti-Auto-Tune music? What does it say about this movement that Wyclef and Nick freakin' Cannon have signed on?

Kris Allen on loving Jacko, learning the viola, and being a heartthrob

Kris-allen_l Yesterday, 19 Recordings announced that it has signed American Idol season 8 champ Kris Allen — surprise! (Ha.) In a statement, Allen teased what the album might sound like: “It will be very similar to what you heard from me on the show — definitely in the pop/rock genre.” During my recent interview with Allen, he told me pretty much the same thing, though he also added, “The way I came across on the show is a guy and his guitar, but I want to come across as more the soft-rock kind of thing… hopefully something that not everyone has seen before. I think that some people will be very surprised by it — certain songs, people will be like, ’Didn’t expect that.’ Just like the whole 'Heartless' thing — people were not expecting me to do that song. And it worked out. So I think you’ll see things like that. I think it’s going to be very cool.”

Since he was still in the process of working out who he was going to work with on the album, Allen was understandably reticent to get more specific than that. But he had plenty to say about the music that has shaped him so far. So in the hope of tiding you ravenous Allen fans over until the fall release of his debut record, I offer you the following tidbits. Oh, and I fully expect to hear a collective awww… after you read the part about him dancing to Jacko all by his lonesome. (Also, in the rare chance that you missed it, do check out Idolatry's terrific five-part interview with Allen; link below.)

On playing the viola
I started playing viola when I was in fourth grade. But it was kind of like a requirement. I never hated it or anything, but it was never something that I loved. We had an orchestra and it was like, a couple of my friends play the viola, so I was like, “I’ll play the viola.” We had to play something, I just picked that. All my friends stopped playing but I kept playing until the end of high school.

On growing up musical
My dad was a musician. He was a singer and he played the guitar, so music was always around. I never really wanted to pick up [the guitar] until I was 13. One summer, during the day [when] my parents were working and we were home alone, my brother would go to the pool and hang out with girls and do whatever. I would just hang out in the house. No one had a clue what I was doing. I was teaching myself how to play the guitar.

On Michael Jackson and his other favorite artists back in the day
I was a huge, huge, huge fan of Michael Jackson. Almost too big of a fan. He’s one of the best ever.I would sit in my room and put on a hat and try to dance in front of the mirror. All this stuff on my own, never in front of people. I was too embarrassed. I started listening to him and then started listening to a lot of R&B stuff like Boyz II Men, II. I grew up listening to that. I love that. [Singing] “I’ll make love to you…” Probably not a good idea [for a 9-year-old kid]. And then I think my next CD was TLC, Crazy Sexy Cool. My parents were totally cool with it — maybe they didn’t know exactly. They were young and they tried to be cool. [Laughs]

What he’s listening to now
A lot of different stuff. Love Coldplay. Coldplay’s first CD, I think it’s amazing. The Kings of Leon CD is incredible. I like Mutemath a lot. The Kanye CD [808s & Heartbreak], it’s amazing, one of the best of the decade, probably.

On being his own artist in the, eh-hem, often controlling recording industry
I am really laid back and kind of go-with-the-flow, but I will never do anything that I don’t believe in. So if there’s a song that they’re trying to shoot at me and I’m like, ehhhh, then it probably won’t happen. I think it would just be uncomfortable. You can’t do something that you don’t feel good about.

And just because… On adjusting to overnight heartthrob status
I always try to take it with a grain of salt, because being that is not going to get me anywhere. I just hope I can put out good music. It’s weird. But [my wife is] amazing at dealing with it. They ask her for her autograph as well. [Laughs]

Christina Aguilera adds Le Tigre to list of collaborators for new album: Will her electro album trump Lady Gaga's?

Aguilera-le-tigre_l Lady Gaga, music's pop princess of the moment, better watch her back: Christina Aguilera has assembled an army of grrl power for her forthcoming fourth studio album, due later this fall.

Aguilera announced earlier this year she'd be hooking up with electro acts Goldfrapp and Ladytron, on top of her go-to producer Linda Perry and ambient Aussie songstress and "new best friend" Sia. Now, she'll be heading into the studio to record with the beat-happy riot ladies of Le Tigre.

Le Tigre haven't even recorded an album since 2004's This Island, yet now they're all about working with an ex-Mouseketeer. Then again, we kind of saw this coming: Back in '04, lead singer Kathleen Hanna told EW: "'Ilove Christina Aguilera. She has, like, mini-feministmessages.'' Meant to be!

Needless to say, all of this is very interesting. What's next for Aguilera — announcing she's working with Hot Chip?! (Not a bad idea, actually. Somebody get on that.) Xtina offered a brief glimpse of what her next album could sound like with last year's greatest hits collection, Keeps Gettin' Better, which included thumpers like "Dynamite" and the title track. Namely: more pulsating, ready-for-the-floor synth beats, less belting and jazz-era crooning.

With Le Tigre and co. on board to help pen and produce the tunes, her new album looks like it will move even further toward the avant-garde electro-pop genre. Or, as Gaga puts it, "great art."

What do you think of the new direction Aguilera has taken? Are you digging the electro-y vibe, or do you wish she'd work those God-given vocal chords more? And which pop star holds your allegiance: Xtina, or the doppelganger she doesn't know and thinks might be a man, Lady Gaga?

Jack White reveals plans for solo album; proves existence of own space-time continuum

Tagged:

Jack-white_l Seriously, is this man bionic? He's already got a White Stripes reunion in the wings, the debut from supergroup side project The Dead Weather due in July, and, for all we know, new Raconteurs tracks just spontaneously conjur themselves in his basement while he carpools the kids.

Now, Jack White has announced plans for a possible solo album, which he hopes to start working on in "late 2009." I hope he enjoys his eight-minute daily power nap, because the man clearly can't be wasting any hours on something as dull and unproductive as REM-cycle sleep.

What do you think, Music Mixers? Is all this White magic welcome, or could Jack be a little too nimble, and start diluting his gifts?

Watch the new Wilco/Radiohead/Johnny Marr/Neil Finn doc for free

Last December Crowded House singer Neil Finn convinced Jeff Tweedy, Johnny Marr, Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway from Radiohead, and KT Tunstall, amongst others, to join him in New Zealand. Why? So they could perform a handful of shows and record an Oxfam-benefiting CD under the banner of 7 Worlds Collide (the whole shebang was basically a sequel to some shows Finn had overseen in 2001 with many of the same suspects that produced the 7 Worlds Collide live album.) You can now see a documentary that tracks their creative efforts on youtube. There are many rocking highlights though I particularly enjoyed the non-musical contribution of actor Rhys Darby who in the guise of his Flight of the Conchords character Murray explains his role thus: "Neil doesn't know anything about, agendas, items, what sort of folder to have. Do you use a pencil of a pen? Do you have a rubber on the end of it? That's where I would come in."

So Music Mixers what do you think of the efforts of Finn, Tweedy, Marr, and company? And would you like to see "Murray" get his own show?
