Iggy Pop calls Fred Durst a thug: This week in rock feuds

Iggy Pop recently taped a video in which he talked about his new jazz-influenced album Premilinaires, and mentioned that he had grown sick of “listening to idiot thugs with guitars banging out crappy music.”

Now Mr. Pop has elaborated on this point to British newspaper The Sun, saying that he meant "anyone from Smashing Pumpkins to — what's the one with Fred Durst?" That quote makes you wonder quite how long ago Iggy grew tired of guitar rock, given that neither the Pumpkins nor Limp Bizkit are what you would call radio staples these days.

And of course, you could also argue that Iggy himself is more than capable of a bit of rock thuggery himself. But watching the original video, I was more struck by just how awesome this guy still is as he engagingly rambles on about French author Michel Houellebecq, New Orleans music, and his cute dog, all in a voice oddly reminiscent of Sam Elliott narrating The Big Lebowski.

So, Music Mixers, do you agree with Iggy’s description of Limp Bizkitand the Smashing Pumpkins as thugs?  And are there any, uh, more modernacts you think would equally irritate the chief Stooge? And, seriously, why isn’t this guy getting a ton of voice-over work?

Black Eyed Peas, "I Gotta Feeling": Does it have that boom boom pow?

Filed under: Black Eyed Peas and tagged:

BEP_dl By now, if you have not been inundated by the robot-thunder thump of "Boom Boom Pow" a good 9048567 or so times, you are probably still in the dark about Susan Boyle, and also wondering who this mysterious Oprah person is that people are always talking about.

Which is to say, the single has been inescapable lo these many months (in fact, the Black Eyed Peas' biggest hit to date), and the only possible way to remove it from the airwaves would seem to be a physical restraining order by the FCC — or another single from the BEPs: Hence, the official video for followup "I Gotta Feeling." Tell us, Mixers, does it "Boom"'s boom? Or is it a bust?

John Mayer does some 'California Dreamin" on Conan

Have you ever listened to the Mamas and the Papas' "California Dreamin'" and thought to yourself, "Dude, this song is cool and all, but it'd be even better if it had about 5 times more bluesy licks and 10,000 times more guitar-face?" Me neither! John Mayer has, though, and since he is John Mayer and we are us, he got to play his version of the '60s classic on The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien last night. It was fine, I guess? In addition to his John Mayer Trio bros, J.M. was joined by a children's choir, which makes me want to refrain from saying any more possibly mean things about this performance since those kids are really just innocent bystanders. So watch it for yourself below (clip spotted at Idolator), and you tell me: Is there any reason for this cover to exist?

Sam Butera, R.I.P.

Saxophonist Sam Butera, best known for his endlessly entertaining work in Louis Prima’s high-octane band, died from pneumonia on Wednesday at the age of 81, according to the New York Times. We could gas on about how great he was, but instead we’ll just post this clip of him and Prima doing “Oh Marie” (mislabeled here as “Hey Marie,” for some reason).

David Guetta feat. Kelly Rowland, "When Love Takes Over": Exclusive extended mix

David-and-kelly-video_l A few weeks back, we published our list of potential summer smashes – i.e. the songs you may adore (bonjour, Phoenix!) or not (sayanora, Shinedown), but would inevitably be hearing banging from every beach bbq/nightclub/passing Prius throughout the '09 season.

In emails and comments, Music Mixers repeatedly told us we had neglected one major single: French DJ David Guetta's collaboration with ex-Destiny's Child Kelly Rowland, "When Love Takes Over." And so: we stand corrected!

The song has already topped Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay charts, and is slowly crawling up the Hot 100, but we've got an exclusive extended mix for you to stream for your own personal playlist, courtesy of Guetta's label.

Billboard actually has more on the story behind the single, and we can tell you that his upcoming album includes guest spots from will.i.am, Kid Cudi, Estelle, and Akon. So now you tell us: Will this indeed be your jam this summer?

Santigold remix project 'Southerngold' gets shut down

Southerngold-mixtape_l It's becoming a familiar tale — call it "Grey Album Syndrome." First, an enterprising DJ creates a new piece of art by collaging and re-contextualizing creative (if technically not quite authorized) samples of one or more popular albums. Next, lawyers representing the source artist(s) swoop in and serve the DJ with cease-and-desist letters prohibiting the project from being sold or distributed. Then, if the project is actually any good, a minor press frenzy ensues. The latest victim/beneficiary of this routine is Terry Urban's Southerngold, which lays beats based on samples from Santigold's excellent 2008 debut underneath vocals from Southern rap hits by the likes of Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, and Young Jeezy. Cool concept, clever title, fun cover art, murky legal underpinnings: Southerngold hits all the bases for full-blown Grey Album Syndrome, and sure enough, Terry Urban says that Santigold's label, Downtown Records, just hit him with the old C&D. Let the buzz begin!

I'm no lawyer, but I can't for the life of me see what Downtown would gain by shutting down Southerngold. As Urban recently wrote: "I'm not selling this… I'm not making a dime… I'm encouraging everyone to BUY Santigold's album." Free promotion for an album that came out well over a year ago — where's the harm in that? I reached out to Santigold's camp this morning to see if she's aware of this situation; they haven't gotten back to me yet. We'll see how this shakes out, but for now, Southerngold is still out there on the Web for anyone who cares to look for it, and it's pretty great at times. I particularly recommend the track that blends Santigold's "Lights Out" with Rick Ross' "Hustlin'," as well as the one that pairs Santi's "Shove It" with Mike Jones' "Still Tippin'." What do you think of this little controversy?

FRIDAY MORNING UPDATE: Santigold has responded to yesterday's reports, and she doesn't sound too happy about her label's reported actions. Here's her statement in full, issued last night:

"Some kid just hit me up about this on MySpace. It wasthe first I ever heard about it. I've never heard anything about thisDJ or this remix, and certainly did not send a cease and desist letter.I'm a supporter of mixtape culture and intend to get to the bottom ofit."

We'll keep you updated as any further information emerges.

DMC wants to tour with Eminem

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

DMC-Eminem_l

It's unclear at the moment whether Eminem will follow up the scattered promotional performances he's been giving for his new album Relapse with a full concert tour. If he does hit the road again soon, though, he can already count on at least one promising candidate for his opener slot: DMC, of the legendary Run-DMC. "I'm trying to get to be the opening act whenever he tours," DMC (pictured, right) tells the Music Mix. "Hopefully I'll get to tour with him."

Though he hasn't broached the subject with Em yet, the two bonded at this year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, where Eminem introduced Run-DMC as his longtime heroes. Turns out the respect is mutual. "He inspires me," says DMC. "When I hear him, he makes me go back to my bedroom and sit down and write. I feel that we represent the upper echelon of what we're supposed to do with our craft."

What do you think of this old-school/new-school pairing? Would you buy tickets to an Eminem/DMC concert?

MGMT finally release video for 'Kids': Monsters and toddlers and animated hot dogs, oh my!

File this under the "six months too late" category: Psych-synth outfit MGMT have finally released a video for their jaunty jam "Kids" off 2008's solid Oracular Spectacular. Strangely, the official video only looks slightly more professional than the year-and-a-half old fan video (over 15 million YouTube views and counting), which starred a guy and a girl drenched in black-and-white face paint done up to resemble tigers, or giraffes, or whathaveyou. The fan video was a little strange taken on its own, but it doesn't even begin to compare with the new MGMT-approved video.

In the official clip, the poor, helpless, sure-to-be-traumatized-for-the-rest-of-his-life toddler of guest star Joanna Newsom is terrorized by a myriad of legitimately scary monsters: gigantic roaches, blood-colored zombies, and what look to be mutant castoffs from Zoobilee Zoo, to name a few. There's even a trippy animated interlude toward the end that needs to be seen to be believed. The glam-tastic band themselves don't show up until three minutes in, which is probably a good thing since they all seem to be (unfortunately) swathed in aluminum foil. MGMT claim on their website no children were harmed making the video, but I'm not so sure. Either that kid's tears were real, or we have the year's first serious contender for Best Performance by a Baby in a Music Video. Regardless, the song still rocks to the nth degree, does it not? Which video do you prefer, Mixers: The fan-made face paint one (after the jump), or the official Monsters, Inc. on acid version (below)?

'DJ Hero' video game coming this fall: Who's in?

Tagged:

Guitar Hero and Rock Band have already made historic strides in the field of allowing people who lack all musical ability (like me!) to pretend that they are awesome and talented. But this march of progress is only getting started. In September, The Beatles: Rock Band will let folks like me become not just rock stars, but the biggest rock stars ever. And in October, the newly announced DJ Hero will help us play like we're the illest of turntablists. Rolling Stone reports that DJ Hero's plastic turntable doohickey will feature "three stream buttons, a crossfader and effects dial," which you'll use to cut, scratch, and mix over 80 tracks, including mash-ups of artists like the Foo Fighters, the Beastie Boys, Rick James, and Gwen Stefani.

Sounds pretty sweet, no? Between this and the upcoming Beatles game, I'm starting to think seriously again about clearing out space in my tiny, crowded living room so I can install some fake plastic instruments. Anyone else psyched for DJ Hero? While you decide, click just below to check out a performance that Jay-Z and Eminem did earlier this week to promote DJ Hero, which will feature exclusive tunes (!) from both of them. (Thanks to Rap Radar for the footage.)
