Mel Gibson directs Oksana Grigorieva's 'Say My Name' video: Snap judgment time!

Oksana-Grigorieva-video_l Your opinions were all over the place when we posted one week ago about "Say My Name," the new single that Russian singer Oksana Grigorieva co-wrote with her beau, Mel Gibson. "I liked the song, it had feeling and was deep," wrote one commenter. Noted another: "PAINFUL!! YOWLING! Haaaaalp!" Apologies for bringing up such a sensitive topic again so soon, but today we've got to revisit that divisive piece of work — this time in the form of a music video directed by none other than Gibson himself. His moody black-and-white clip for "Say My Name" leaves the spotlight squarely on Grigorieva's wannabe-diva vocals, which I guess could be a good or a bad thing depending on how you like that voice. I happen to find it insanely irritating. Even if you find the song more tolerable than I do, though, why did Gibson give it such a boring video? Let's just say this slow-moving series of by-the-book performance shots is not exactly the man's most memorable work behind the camera.

Then again, I was only able to force myself to watch this clip all the way through once, so perhaps I'm missing some subtle nuances? Check out the "Say My Name" video over at Grigorieva's site (sadly, it's not embeddable here). Then let us know which camp you fall into: "it had feeling" or "Haaaaalp!"?

Exclusive: Sugarland set for one-hour ABC concert special August 3

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

Sugarland_l

The night before Sugarland’s concert DVD Live on the Inside hits a Wal-Mart store near you, anyone with a TV antenna (okay, um, TV digital converter box thingy) will be able to try before they buy: EW has learned exclusively that the Atlanta-based country duo will preview a selection of the DVD footage in a one-hour broadcast special, airing August 3rd on ABC.

Shot using 20 cameras during a single show in Lexington, Ken., last fall, the concert includes the band’s hits — “All I Want To Do,” “Baby Girl,” “Settlin’” — plus live staples like hoedown-in-the-round “Genevieve” and covers of R.E.M.’s “The One I Love” and “Nightswimming.” (Not coincidentally, the Wal-Mart DVD comes packaged with a CD of the band’s many covers.) “We’ve always had a lot of confidence in our live shows because our fans keep telling us, ‘Wow, I had no idea,’” says Sugarland co-frontperson/fedora aficianado Kristian Bush. “But there just aren’t enough days in the year to go and play for everybody. Jennifer [Nettles] and I figured, ‘Well, we might as well film it.’ Our music began as a word of mouth experience, and I think our shows are, too — so we’re just trying to get to as many people as we can so they can spread it as far as they can.”

Country music specials have been reliably successful of late — the recent George Strait “Artist of the Decade” fiesta won its timeslot handily — and for ABC, running something like this in the dog days of humiliation-heavy summer programming is certainly low-risk. But what’s the viewing incentive for those not already converted to the Sugarland message of hope n’ love? “If you’re gonna try something new for an hour, and your choices are a guy falling into mud, or a Sugarland show in Rupp Arena, I recommend the Sugarland show,” Bush laughs. “The guy’s gonna fall into mud tomorrow or next week, but the Sugarland show’s only gonna happen once.” Unless you buy the DVD the next day, naturally. “If you go buy the DVD, you’re just gonna be sitting in your 5.1-surround-sound house, freaking out, watching it over and over again,” Bush says, presumably in (infinite?) jest.

For a sneak peek at what’s in store, check out Sugarland’s video for “Love” after the jump, which — based on the band’s recent set lists — will likely be the special’s opening number. (“It looks like the superhero version of what we do,” says Bush of the Shaun Silva-directed footage.) Then tell us in the comments: Who’s excited? If you’re not already a Sugarland fan, is it worth tuning in for? And what’s the last non-cable, non-Christmas-or-awards-show-related concert special you watched? I see Celine Dion had one last year. Is Sugarland better than Celine Dion? Did I really just ask that question out loud?

Exclusive: Stream new Third Eye Blind single 'Don't Believe a Word'

ThirdEyeBlind_l

Their new album Ursa Major doesn’t drop until August 18, but because you Music Mixers lead a totally charmed life, you can hear Third Eye Blind’s new single “Don’t Believe a Word” right here, right now. The ’90s vets, presumed dead by many, have, it seems, merely been regrouping; by playing on college campuses across the nation, they’ve cultivated a fresh fanbase whose memories of “Jumper” may not transcend its use in the recent Yes Man, but who love to doot-doot-doot all the same. (Believe the hype: a 3EB show at this year’s SXSW was not only surprisingly well-attended, but the roar that shook the crowd when Stephan Jenkins asked his friends to step back from that ledge rivaled anything Metallica had produced in the same Stubbs backyard the night before.)

So go ahead and press play, then tell us, Mixers: how’s it gonna be? Are you ready for Third Eye Blind’s return? And is “Don’t Believe a Word” a worthy successor to such irresistable past gems like “Semi-Charmed Life” and “Never Let You Go”? (Yes, I both bought and enjoyed Blue, okay?)

Adam Lambert's new (old) single 'Want': Awesome new tune or lame cash-in?

Filed under: News and tagged:

Adam-lambert_l Apparently American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert recorded an album in 2007 and 2008, before anyone had ever heard of him. Now, not shockingly, somebody is trying to cash in with these early recordings. A label called Hi Fi Recordings/Wilshire Records has just released a "single," called "Want," from the sessions, and an album, On With the Show, is due out later this summer.

Check out the song below, then let us know what you think. Is this nothing more than a cheap cash-in? Or can you never have enough Adam Lambert?

UPDATE: Lambert has just released a statement responding to the release of this new song:

"Back in 2005 when I was a struggling artist, I was hired as a studiosinger to lend my vocals to tracks written by someone else. I was brokeat the time and this was my chance to make a few bucks, so I jumped atthe opportunity to record for my first time in a professional studio. The work I did back then in no way reflects the music I am currently in the studio working on. I'm thrilled to be working with some of today's hottest songwriters andproducers and can't wait for people to hear what my music really soundslike."

EW Exclusive! Hear a new Duncan Sheik charity track

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Duncan-Sheik_l Much to some of my coworkers' chagrin, I have no trouble expressing my opinions (my own mother claims I didn't say anything at all until the age of four, and have been making up for lost time ever since.) But not everyone is so fortunate. Our Time is a charity that helps kids who stutter by providing them with a special performing arts camp, and on June 23, they are releasing an album called Listen, featuring songs written by people who have been assisted by the non-profit and performed by a host of luminaries such as Carly Simon, Hall & Oates, and Mandy Patinkin.

Below you can hear the-exclusive-to-the-Music Mix track "All I Want Is Love," which appears on the CD. The song was penned by 16-year-old Our Time member Andre Gillyard, and features Duncan Sheik, Holly Brook, and cast members from the Sheik-co-penned musical Spring Awakening.

Have a listen to the song and, while you're doing so, check out the Our Time website. It's a great cause and donations are welcome.

Andrew Bird: Bionic man amazes at Radio City Music Hall

Andrew-bird_l Andrew Bird is a mad genius. After seeing him live last night at Radio City Music Hall, I realized watching him in-person is like watching a circus performer with a wonderfully weird case of ADD. He'll start on the violin. Thirty seconds later, he's on the guitar, or will have turned the violin on its side to play it like a mandolin. Then he'll start to sing. Mid-sentence, he'll stop to whistle for a spell. Then he'll quickly be back on the guitar, or perhaps go for a turn on the glockenspiel.

Throughout, he incorporates the help of his magical loop pedals, which make him sound like he's doing six million things at once. Seeing the intrepid multi-instrumentalist/multitasker perform is an incredible sight to be behold, especially given that his 2009 album Noble Beast sounds so fluid and well-produced, that you don't really stop to think about the technique behind it.

The dapper-looking whistle-blower played for the better part of 90 minutes, performing a number of Noble Beast's usual suspects: An amplified, sped-up version of "Oh No," and a spirited rendition of the tongue-twisty "Fitz and Dizzyspells."

The Beast stunner, though, was "Effigy": Bird prefaced the song with the night's only lengthy introduction, explaining the song spun-off from the chorus of "Oh No" and is about a sci-fi reading nerd whose forgotten how to interact with people. "I feel a kinship with this guy," he said, explaining that the imaginary social-awkward dude could easily be him. Then, he launched into a sleepy, romantic, largely loop-free take of the song that was simply gorgeous.

Of his older stuff, Bird sampled liberally from previous albums Armchair Apocrypha and The Mysterious Production of Eggs, with crowd-favorites like "Fiery Crash," and  the jovial "Opposite Day." In the encore, he reached back to 2003's Weather Systems to perform "Don't Be Scared," a heartbreaker that features some of his very best songwriting.

Mariachi-like desert rockers Calexico — whose opening set was lively and impressive, and included personal fave "The Crystal Frontier" — joined Bird on stage for three songs. Given that Bird has a band of his own, the number of musicians on stage ballooned to nearly a dozen, each with their various instruments of choice. The highlight of the mini-set was easily the bouncy "Scythian Empire," bolstered by the sheer power of Calexico's trumpeters.

But, of course, it was Bird's night. The whiz-kid made his intricately-layered brainiac rock look easy, when nothing could be further from the truth. He's essentially a massively-talented musical wind-up toy. Was anyone else at Radio City last night? Or have you seen Bird elsewhere and came away similarly impressed? And how on earth is he able to whistle so melodically (and powerfully)?

MewithoutYou, 'The Fox, the Crow and the Cookie': A Music Mix video exclusive

Experimental Philadelphia rock outfit mewithoutYou's fourth album, it's all crazy! it's all false! it's all a dream! it's alright (out last month on Tooth & Nail), has some seriously heavy origins: Frontman Aaron Weiss — a freegan who only eats discarded food and tours in a bus converted to run on waste vegetable oil — looked to the writings of Sufi mystic Bawa Muhaiyaddeen; his work inspired both the title and the themes on the album.

The band will be on the road through August to support crazy (iaciafiaadia, for short? trips off the tongue!), produced by Daniel Smith (Danielson Famile) and Brian McTear (Mazarin, Matt Pond PA); below, check out the fantastical video for shambolic, freewheeling album track "The Fox, the Crow and the Cookie," and tell us what you think:

The Dead Weather: Jack White's new band makes its (unimpressive) TV debut on 'Conan'

Jack White's new alt-garage supergroup the Dead Weather made their splashy television debut last night on Conan, and I think I'm just going to have to come out and say it: I don't like them. At all.

The few tracks that have leaked from their forthcoming album Horehound (due July 14) struck me as aimless and noisy, and their lifeless performance on Conan did nothing to alter that opinion. A stringy-haired White was relegated to drums, with the Kills frontwoman Alison Mosshart taking center stage for the group's song "Hang You From the Heavens."

Mosshart's got charisma, but the repetitious whirring of the guitars and the track's obnoxious lyrics did her no favors. (Sample lyric: "I'd like to grab you by the hair and drag you to the devil." Uh, okaaay.)

As a semi-enthusiastic fan of both the White Stripes and the Raconteurs, my displeasure with the Dead Weather is both disappointing and surprising. There just doesn't seem to be anything special about their (generic) brand of dark-rock.

But what do you think, Mixers? Do you like the boozy intensity of Jack White's new band? Or do you prefer him in Stripes or as a Raconteur? Watch the performance below:
