Extended Play: Brooke White, 'High Hopes and Heartbreak'

Welcome to Extended Play, an occasional feature here on the Music Mix intended to give you a chance to read even more reviews of what’s coming out this week, so you can be a better-informed listener and also wow your friends. We are nothing if not in favor of you enhancing your social life.

This week, Brooke White, High Hopes and Heartbreak.

Brooke White
High Hopes & Heartbreak
Pop (June Baby)

No one who saw White sing “You’ve Got a Friend” on Season 7 of American Idol will be surprised by the Carole King-ish piano-pop tunes on her post-Idol debut. Additionally, no one who’s heard a song sung in the English language will be shocked by White’s lyrics, which tend toward shopworn ruminations such as “everybody makes mistakes.” High Hopes & Heartbreak does contain one unexpected highlight, though: White’s lovely soul-folk take on Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody.” Karaoke it ain’t. I LOVED “Use Somebody”!!!!!

People need to get over this notion that songs can’t be covered by other artists!!!

And if you think that the Kings of Leon are angry that Brooke White covered the song, they’re crying all the way to the bank because they receive the songwriting royalties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, she made “Use Somebody” such a bland song. This song really suits a female voice…but this doesn’t work. There’s a solid cover by Pixie Lott. Way better than this.

i LUVED her album..i jss thot id like a coupla songs..but i seriously liked almost all of them! her use somebody cover is AMAZING..cuz i don like the real version by kings on leon, its very annoying. id give her album a 9/10!

Love that whole album. I think there is too much discussion of the Kings of Leon cover. Let’s focus instead on White’s own stunning compositions. She channels Carole King on the spellbinding “Out of the Ashes” and sounds like the next Stevie Nicks on the bouncy title track. I wasn’t White’s biggest fan on Idol but she has produced one of its most accomplished and enjoyable alumni recordings. A true joy.

My wife and I totally enjoyed every song on this alblum. I hope that she gets the play time that this music deserves as I know people will really get into HER music.

It’s OK, but I get the B. Not great, her voice sounded better many times on the show, and it won’t sell much. But her duet with Michael Johns, “Life Is Okay,” was wonderful for both of them.

Ithought she was a very attractive woman but I didn’t like her vocals at all.

Actually I really like it. It would also be good mashed up with something from Mike Nesmith from the 70s, or Linda Ronstadt.

This album is great!!! I actually loved her version of Use Somebody and was not expecting to.

  • roboPHOTOshopped

WOW, she must use mariah’s airbrush artist.

I like the new album, but I really like her pre-idol ablum “Songs From The Attic”. It’s a classic album and Tim Simms, the guy who produced it is a genius!
