Demi Lovato tops albums chart, but Michael Jackson outsells her

Demi-Lovato-Jackson_l Well, here we go again! That’s the name of the No. 1 album on Billboard‘s flagship Billboard 200 albums chart: Demi Lovato’s Here We Go Again, which sold 107,000 copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan. Not bad for a quiet mid-summer week. But that’s not actually why I exclaimed that particular phrase at the beginning of this post. I said that because the Disney Channel starlet’s sophomore effort was not, in fact, the highest-selling album in the U.S. last week. Instead that honor goes once more to Michael Jackson’s Number Ones, which sold another 151,000 copies but — say it with me, now — doesn’t count for the Billboard 200 because it’s too old. You’ll have to consult Billboard‘s Top Comprehensive Albums chart, which includes catalog releases like Number Ones alongside new releases like Here We Go Again, if you want a reliable indicator of which albums were really doing big business last week. And so, after a brief Daughtry-related break, Michael Jackson is back to making a mockery of that Billboard 200 rule, which worked perfectly fine until his posthumous sales boom.

Speaking of Daughtry, the rockers’ week-old album sold 100,000 to hang tight at No. 2. I guess a 63-percent second-week drop-off doesn’t hurt so much when you have an opening number like they did.

Meanwhile, if lead singer Chris Daughtry is a poster boy for how to find success after American Idol even if you don’t win, season 6 winner Jordin Sparks might be proving the exact opposite. Two years ago, her debut album earned the dubious distinction of the lowest first-week sales of any Idol champ’s first album. Her follow-up, Battlefield, just did even worse despite solid reviews, landing at No. 7 after selling a mediocre 48,000 copies. At least 19-year-old Sparks has plenty of time to get her career back on track.

And that was it for top-20 debuts this week. What do you think of these numbers? Are you surprised to see Jordin Sparks’ disappointing performance?

Yes, those are disappointing number for Sparks. It’s not that surprising cause the label wasn’t promoting the album at all. She just started doing talk show appearances this week once the album had come out. So hopefully sales will be a long-term seller like her debut was…cause yeah, it’s a very good album. Way better than her bland, Disney-fied debut.

Very surprised at Sparks’ lackluster sales.. .especially with how well “Battlefield” (the song) caught on… of course didn’t see her do much press for the album (i.e. performances on daytime tv or night tv for that matter)… so the lack of live promotion may have something to do with it… hopefully she can get it back on track…

wow, Michael Jackson’s sales numbers are incredible.. even after all the hype and everything has died down, he is still selling like gangbusters.. and it’s not just his Number Ones album, all of them are still selling very strongly.. he really is the King of Pop..

Hi GG (my fav), I missed u last night. I poetsd a bit after the Billboard live concert, it was amazing. Even if am in Canada, I was able to see the entire live show with no interruptions. That was truly awesome. I am not so sad anymore for him not coming up for a concert. Last night all made up for that. I am a fan for life.

Jordin Sparks had a new album drop? I dont even think i have heard her single? Same with Whitney Houston, i havent heard one new track yet from her new album, she needs a hit single to help drive her album sales to get a good comeback!

Jordin’s first album had the lowest sales in her debut week..yet her CD eventually went platinum. That was remarkable. Her singles sold like crazy, No Air is the top selling single of any AI contestant, period.

She’s found much success in spite of her first week CD sales. And she will again. “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Her career isn’t off track. It’s doing well. She’ll have more longevity with her new CD than Demi will have with hers.

Ugh, count me among the 48K who purchased Jordin Sparks’ “Battlefield.” I totally fell for Slezak’s review, and didn’t preview the songs online before ponying up at Target. There are a couple of keepers, but 75% is complete drivel, and this comes from a guy who totally digs pop music.

I was in Target a couple of days ago and they were out of ‘Off the Wall’ and ‘Number Ones’ but they had plenty of CDs by other artists. There will never be another MJ — at least not in our lifetime.

  • Jim

Jackson is still truly the King. This is what this still shows.

I bought Jordin Sparks’s album and let me just say it is FABULOUS! she deserves to have people buy this album…even though her first album had the lowest sales of any idol winner, in its debut, it had many hit songs to sustain it to a platinum status. I feel the same will happen for Battlefield. It has many great songs that will help sustain Jordin’s sales

I would much rather debut at #10 on the charts and slowly build, rather than to kind of have a good start and then completely fade away like other Idols have done. Jordin is gonna be all right.

“I would much rather debut at #10 on the charts and slowly build, rather than to kind of have a good start and then completely fade away like other Idols have done. ”

I’m sure Taylor Hicks tells himself that every day.

Hopefully American Idol’s reign of terror is slowly drawing to a close…..

Here we go again … another week of “xxxx is #1 on the Top 200, but MJ outsells him/her”. WHAT IS THE POINT BY NOW????

  • jake

Yeah, i’m a bit surprised by jordin sparks performance, but I also did not see her out promoting it on talk shows etc. How did Michael Johns CD do — which came out at the end of June?

  • Charlotte

    The point is MJ rules!!

Demi Lovato is proving she is a force to be reckoned with! Yes! She has worked very hard to finally be given this recognition and I am proud of her. Looks like the world is finally realizing what a talented singer/songwriter she is! Keep up the good work Demi! And fans, keep supporting our girl! XOXOXO!

Honestly her voice is the same mediocore Disney stuff like Hilary Duff – the best singer of her generation is Renne Olstead – she truly has a wonderful voice and doesn’t need to be a “performer” or have a tv show to confuse talent with popularity or a corporate machine generating “buzz”

    • Ethel Merman

Ooooh, Renee! Yes, I am old to be her Mom but there is nothing like someone who can croon like the olden days. No vicoder(sp?) here!

    • David

Yes – Renne is absolutely great – her version of Summertime is great, so is Pennies from Heaven with Chris Botti – honestly get kids to listen to good music not Disney mass marketing

    • kirk

Yes to Renee – I love “a love that will last” and “through the fire” -talented
unlike Demi,Hilary Duff, Miley, and whoever else they plan to churn out
