Kelly Clarkson's 'Already Gone': Does it really rip off Beyonce's 'Halo'? Diva crisis!

The interwebs is alive today with the sound of music — or more accurately, the sound of a music scandal over two dueling diva power ballads: Kelly Clarkson’s “Already Gone” and Beyonce’s “Halo.”

MTV, Rolling Stone, and other press outlets are breathlessly replaying Clarkson’s remarks to reporter on Canada’s CBC regarding the two songs’ similarities, and her disappointment in co-writer Ryan Tedder (he of OneRepublic frontmanship and “Bleeding Love” co-penning fame). Says Kelly, in part, of working with Tedder:

“We wrote about six songs together, four or five of them made the album. It was all fine and dandy. I’d never heard of a song called ‘Halo.’ Her album came out when my album was already being printed. No-one’s gonna be sittin’ at home, thinking ‘Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyonce and Kelly the same track to write to.’ No, they’re just gonna be saying I ripped someone off. I called Ryan and said, ‘I don’t understand. Why would you do that?’”

Watch them both here (The Beyonce clip will send you directly to a sanctioned YouTube stream):

Kelly also claims she “fought and fought” to prevent the label from releasing “Already Gone” as a single; they’re doing it now without her consent: “It sucks, but it’s one of those things I have no control over. I already made my album. At this point, the record company can do whatever they want with it. It’s kind of a s—-y situation, but.… You know, you learn.”

You know what I learned, readers? These songs are NOT SO MUCH ALIKE. Seriously — take any GarageBand backbeat to a songwriting session with two of the strongest female singers in the business, and you’ll get something about as similar as these: i.e., not much, beyond their atmospheric balladry.

But you tell me, readers — does Kelly have a right to be fightin’ mad at Tedder, or is this all just silly shenanigans?

New Boyz' 'You're A Jerk': Why can't I stop listening to this song?

I should not love New Boyz’ “You’re A Jerk.” Indeed, this song represents many things that I, as an increasingly crusty hip-hop head in 2009, should by all rights hate: A maddeningly repetitive beat, lyrics whose sole purpose appears to be popularizing some sort of dance fad, new-fangled “swagger” and hipster style privileged over actual musical content. I mean, it comes from an EP titled Skinny Jeans and a Mic. Skinny jeans are not one of the original elements of hip-hop, people!

But you know what? “You’re A Jerk” has a hold on me. There’s just something so ineffably catchy going on here. It’s like an unholy union of the best parts of the Clipse’s “Mr. Me Too,” Mims’ “This Is Why I’m Hot,” Lil Wayne’s “A Milli,” D4L’s “Scotty,” and every Soulja Boy song ever — and by some bizarre alchemy, New Boyz have managed to create something more enjoyable than any of those inspirations (with the possible exception of the Clipse tune). Special credit also goes to New Boyz rapper Legacy, who brings an effortless Warren G cool to his opening verse.

I know I can’t be the only one who’s found myself kind of loving “You’re A Jerk” against all my best instincts. Go ahead and check it out below, then speak up: Anyone else feeling like a “Jerk”?

iTunes: Can bonus-laden liner notes bring back 'the heyday of the album'?

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Apple is working with the Big Four major labels on a music-related project bearing the code name “Cocktail,” according to a news story a friend just sent me. The top-secret goal: “[R]e-creating the heyday of the album when you would sit around with your friends looking at the artwork, while you listened to the music,” in the words of one anonymous exec. No, Steve Jobs hasn’t finally signed off on an iPod with time-travel capabilities (as far as we know). Instead Cocktail aims to capture those bygone days through the use of interactive liner notes and other bonus content sold through the iTunes store.

That Financial Times story is light on details, but Apple and the labels would like to start selling albums with extensive liner notes — lyrics, photos, video clips — as soon as this September. All of which sounds pretty cool, as far as it goes. Still, I’m not quite sure whether this is going to be a particularly massive money-maker. Lyrics, photos, videos, and a wealth of other information about every artist under the sun are already available for free, whether they’re on official artist sites, fan communities, YouTube, or any number of blogs. You just have to be willing to do a little online leg work to find them.

So: How much would you pay for the convenience of having all those things in one place? Do you think this Cocktail of bonus content could have a shot at rescuing the labels’ bottom lines? The recreated heyday of the album awaits your answers.

Blake Lewis in the studio with Rodney Jerkins: A Music Mix Exclusive!

Tagged: ,

It’s no secret I’m excited about Blake Lewis’ upcoming Heartbreak on VinylI blogged last month about my geeky enthusiasm for the season 6 American Idol runner-up — and the release of lead single “Sad Song” has only made me more wound up for the beat-boxing Seattle singer’s sophomore set. (Ch-ch-check out my pal Annie Barrett’s “Sad Song” review here.) Now, to complete the trifecta of This Month in Blake Lewis Blogging, we’ve got some exclusive footage of the man himself in the studio with megaproducer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. (Am I the only one who can’t hear that dude’s name without thinking of Toni Braxton whispering it during the opening strains of “He Wasn’t Man Enough“? Probs.) Anyhoo, it’s fun to learn a little bit about Lewis’ songwriting style (lyrics come last) and see the way Jerkins tries to build a Top 40 hit around the singer’s nifty bag of human sound effects. Press play below and enjoy it for yourself!

Lil Wayne's 'Rebirth': Will it ever come out? Exclusive new details

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Whatever happened to Lil Wayne’s Rebirth? The rock-oriented follow-up to last year’s astronomically successful Tha Carter III was originally scheduled to hit shelves in April of this year. It’s since been pushed back repeatedly with little explanation; meanwhile, lead single “Prom Queen” peaked months ago at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Prom Queen” co-writer Shanell set tongues wagging anew this week when she told an interviewer that Rebirth‘s release had been shuffled yet again, from August 18 to some time in September, adding, “When it’s perfect, you guys will receive it.”

Well, after talking to Cash Money Records and Universal Motown Records, the two key industry entities that are responsible for releasing Lil Wayne’s music, the Music Mix can reveal that perfection may be farther off than expected. “Cash Money just changes their dates whenever they want to,” says a Universal Motown rep. “It’s definitely not August. I have no idea why it was moved, and I’m not anticipating a September release. Right now I’m looking at closer to October.” A representative for Cash Money tells the Music Mix even that estimated date is likely too early: “It’s not going to be ’til the end of the year. We’re talking about holiday [season].” You read that right: Rebirth might not be on shelves until December 2009.

What’s going on here? Tha Carter III‘s success established Wayne as one of the biggest contemporary artists in any genre. The man sold a million records in a week, and two million more in the months since. We’re not talking about some new artist struggling to make his or her name. And according to Cash Money, Rebirth‘s recording stage is “pretty much done,” though it’s still awaiting the final mixing and mastering process. How is it possible that this project is still on ice at this point?

Jill and Kevin video: adorable viral clip of wedding dancers unexpectedly sparks Chris Brown sales

Four-plus months after the assault against then-girlfriend Rihanna that derailed his career, Chris Brown finally apologized on video — and the world said “meh.”

Then, this cutie-patootie video of Minnesota couple Jill and Kevin Heinz and their wedding party dancing ecstatically down the aisle to his 2008 smash “Forever” went viral this week, and suddenly the disgraced singer finds himself climbing the singles charts on iTunes (no. 19, as of this posting) and Amazon (no. 29) once again.

Watch below:

Is the pure joy and happiness of this clip helping to redeem Brown’s image in a way his taped mea culpa just didn’t? Do the warm fuzzies inspired by a group of goofy, chapel-boogying St. Paulies make you feel more forgiving of him, despite yourself? Do tell, in the comments section below.

UPDATE: As of Monday, July 27, the song has now reached no. 7(!) on iTunes.

Avril Lavigne in the studio: An EW exclusive!

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

Avril Lavigne didn’t mean to start recording a new album. “It just happened,” she says of the still-untitled November 17th release. “I made a record without even feeling like I made a record.”

Sitting in a studio in Tarzana, Calif., with her feet — clad in a pair of vinyl hightops — propped up on a mixing board, the now 24 year old pop-punk princess barely looks a day older than she did when “Complicated” took the airwaves by storm in 2002. “I’m sitting on the piano writing in the foyer, and he’s in the studio, and it’s like, ‘Hey. I like that.’”

“He” is Lavigne’s husband (and Sum 41 frontman) Deryck Whibley, who has used the couple’s home studio to produce eight of the nine tracks she’s recorded so far. “I think this is taking the spirit of what she’s done on previous records so much further,” he says. “It’s way more meaningful, has more of an impact, more emotional. It makes me feel something more than the other stuff. And I wanted to match that musically with the track.”

Lavigne seems thrilled to have such a crack in-house production partner. “He knows me. We spend a lot of time together,” she laughs, in her habitual cackle. “And the cool thing is, if he’s recording something and I don’t like it, I can be like, ‘No, no, no, I don’t like that. More like this.’ Or I can walk in and be like, ‘Love it. Keep going.’”

Friendly Fires: Mercury-nominated Brit rockers debut video for 'Kiss of Life'

One of my favorite imports from beyond the pond, electro-rockers and newly minted Mercury Prize finalists Friendly Fires, have just the released the video for single “Kiss of Life.”

While I enjoy the song’s light and uplifting melody, what I don’t quite understand is lead singer Ed Macfarlane’s attempt at dancing. Is he showing us how to swim on shore, or paying homage to Shakira in a really British and gangly way? Either way, love the song.

What do you think Music-Mixers? Are you feeling the video? Are Ed’s pelvic thrusts English-sexy, or tropic-awkward? What do you think of FF’s chances for the Mercury?
