Daughtry tops the albums chart, outsells Michael Jackson

Chris-Daughtry-Leave_lFor the past three weeks in a row, Michael Jackson’s Number Ones has been the biggest-selling album in the country. Each time, it’s been disqualified from Billboard‘s flagship Billboard 200 chart, along with all Jackson’s other releases, due to its age.

That unusual run of asterisked Billboard 200 chart-toppers is now over. Which artist put an end to Jackson’s posthumous flummoxing of the Billboard rules, you ask? The answer is Daughtry, whose Leave This Town bows atop the chart with a very nice 269,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

That’s actually a bit of a drop-off from the 304,000 that the first album from American Idol alum Chris Daughtry’s band sold when it hit shelves in 2006, but it’s more than anyone else could muster in this sales frame — yes, even Michael.

And so for the first time in a month, the No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 is actually the No. 1 selling album in the U.S., no tricks, no fooling. (Number Ones, meanwhile, sold another 192,000 this week, landing it handily at No. 2 on the Top Comprehensive Albums chart, which counts catalog albums alongside new ones. So don’t think that MJ’s sales have dried up just yet.)

Other Billboard 200 debuts this week came from the Dead Weather’s Horehound at No. 6, demonstrating that at least 51,000 devotees can be counted on to buy any side project Jack White dreams up; R&B singer Joe, who shows up at No. 7 after signing over 49,000 units of his Signature; Twista, who fast-talked his way into 45,000 sales and a No. 8 bow; and Christian power-pop teens pureNRG, who squeak in at No. 20 with 22,000 copies sold.

What do you think about Daughtry’s big week? Any albums you’d have liked to see place higher (or lower)? Have at it in the comments section below!

Colbie Caillat, ‘Fallin’ for You’: Watch her new video here

Once the number-one unsigned artist on MySpace, Malibu native Colbie Caillat became one of the breakout stars of 2007 with a string of hits from her highly accessible debut, Coco. (If you have somehow managed to avoid the nearly year-long ubiquity of the jaunty-sweet single “Bubbly,” her duet with Jason Mraz, “Lucky,” no doubt nailed you somewhere between the mall, the car, and every adult-contemporary station in the land.)

Now, the 24-year-old Caillat is back with the first single from her upcoming second album, Breakthrough (hasn’t she already broken?), out August 25. Here’s a brand-new video for its first single, “Fallin’ for You,” featuring Saturday Night Live‘s Bobby Moynihan, Jello shots, a beach-side DJ dream sequence, man-Uggs, roller skates, and other shenanigans you’ll just have to watch for yourself below:

As Colbie herself told EW,  “There was never a dull moment with Bobby on set. Watching him learn how to ride a Segway was an SNL skit in itself.” What do you think, Music Mixers — are you falling for Caillat and her new video lover-man?

Jeff Mangum, Guided By Voices, Will Oldham join Chris Knox tribute

I’ve just learned via Pitchfork that Chris Knox, of lo-fi New Zealand oddballs Tall Dwarfs, suffered a stroke last month and is currently recuperating at home. “It looks like it could be a long recovery process, but Chris is still Chris,” writes a friend in a statement posted online. On the bright side, that same statement says that a tribute album titled Stroke is already in the works, with covers of Knox’s tunes by artists including Jeff Mangum, Will Oldham, Guided By Voices, Yo La Tengo, Lou Barlow, the Mountain Goats, Bill Callahan, and Jay Reatard.

That’s a pretty awesome list. But the name that’s really jumping out for me is that of Jeff Mangum, the intensely private genius behind Neutral Milk Hotel. It’s no secret that Mangum is a friend of Knox’s: One of his rare public performances since NMH went on hiatus ten years ago was a 2001 gig with Knox in Auckland under the name World of Wild Beards Incorporated. You can hear a great live recording of Knox and Mangum covering John Lennon’s “Mother” at that show below. (Side note: I saw these two share a bill four years later when Tall Dwarfs opened for the reunited Olivia Tremor Control, who featured guest vocals from Mangum. During the Dwarfs’ set, Knox raced through the audience and inadvertently shouldered me in the ribs. This did not hinder my enjoyment of the show in the slightest.)

New Muse song, 'United States of Eurasia': Will 'Twilight' fans flock to it?

Filed under: YouTube Delights and tagged: ,

Sweeping Brit rockers Muse are coming back this September 14 with The Resistance, their first new album since 2006′s Black Holes and Revelations — and now, no doubt, have a whole new audience to contend with, after the mammoth success of the Twilight soundtrack, on which their appropriately gothtastic “Supermassive Black Hole” appeared.

How do they sound after a three-year absence? Stream the anthemic rock opera “United States of Eurasia” (paging Freddie Mercury! And also Thom Yorke!) sneak-peaked below, and judge for yourself:

Paul McCartney gives Citi Field a first show for the ages

Tonight, Paul McCartney will play the final date of a three-night stand at Queens, N.Y.’s Citi Field. This is my review of the first of those shows, which took place last Friday, July 17. Watch a clip from that night featuring special guest star Billy Joel below, then read on (full text is after the jump) — and let us know in the comments section if you were at any of McCartney’s recent performances, and what you thought.

The crowd loses it the instant Paul McCartney takes the stage at the New York Mets’ shiny new home just before 9 p.m. For a minute or two, as approximately 40,000 fans scream their lungs out, you can almost imagine that it’s August 1965 and the Beatles are arriving at Shea Stadium, the now-demolished Mets ballpark that had opened just next door the previous spring. Many in the sold-out stands, though by no means all, are surely old enough to remember that historic show. Tonight, however, McCartney is kicking off a six-city American tour by playing the very first concert Citi Field has ever seen. The look in his eyes says he’s determined to make it another night to remember.

New Beastie Boys featuring Nas, 'Too Many Rappers': Hear it here

It came as a shock to learn yesterday that Adam “MCA” Yauch of the Beastie Boys has cancer in his left salivary gland, forcing the trio to nix a summer tour and push back the release of their next album, Hot Sauce Committee Part 1. A reassuring statement from Yauch’s publicists said the cancer is “very treatable” — Yauch even drolly referred to his diagnosis as “a pain in the neck,” get it? Anyway, here’s hoping for a full and speedy recovery. We’re pulling for ya at the Music Mix, MCA.

Meanwhile, this news is no reason to stop being excited about that upcoming shipment of Hot Sauce, whenever it may end up arriving. New Beasties tune “Too Many Rappers,” a collaboration with Nas, hit the Web over the weekend, much to the delight of New York golden age hip-hop heads like yours truly. It’s an unapologetic throwback, all chop-shop beats and “on and on, to the crack of dawn” rhymes. This thing could have been recorded in, like, 1986, and I love it. Check out “Too Many Rappers” below (some NSFW language), and let us know how it sounds to your ears.

Florence and the Machine, Kasabian lead Mercury Prize short list

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

florence-kasabian_lFinalists for the U.K.’s presitigious album-of-the-year award the Mercury Prize have just been announced, and amongst the lesser-known names (Sweet Billy Pilgrim, the Invisible, Led Bibb) and surprise omissions (Lily Allen,Doves) are several acts already well-known to Stateside indie fans.

The alleged frontrunners?  Anthemic rockers Kasabian and Kate Bush-y art-pop acolytes Florence and the Machine and Bat for Lashes (both perennial Music Mix favorites), though strutting Scottish outfit Glasvegas and electro duo La Roux may just steal the title as well.

Since its establishment in 1992, the prize has gone to names like Portishead, Pulp, and PJ Harvey, as well as Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Antony and the Johnsons, and last year’s winners Elbow.

Click here for a full list of Mercury nominees and odds, and tell us what you think, Music Mixers — are these the best acts that the U.K. had to offer this past year? Who would you cast your vote for?

Dirty Projectors at Brooklyn Pool Party: A live report

With the Manhattan skyline in the distance and a light breeze cooling down the late-afternoon heat, the arty rock jams of Dirty Projectors provided the ideal soundtrack for yesterday's pristine summer Sunday.

EW's Must Indie Experimenters played for more than an hour at the second of this year's JellyNYC Pool Party concert series (named after the old venue, which was an actual — albeit empty — pool), translating their innovative indie pop-rock from one of our favorite new releases (June's Bitte Orca) to an even more satisfying live experience.

The Brooklyn-based band sounded less precise live — a little looser (except for the tight harmonies of the band's female members), a little more melodic, a little easier to dance to. The group started their set slowly with the stripped-down ''Two Doves,'' featuring only band mastermind Dave Longstreth and multi-instrumentalist Angel Deradoorian, but picked up once the rest of the band hit the stage for ''Cannibal Resource,'' followed by a mix of old and new material. Highlights included the breezy, anthemic re-imagining of Black Flag's ''Rise Above,'' and the melodic '90s R&B-over-an-indie-rock-beat of Bitte Orca's first single ''Stillness Is the Move.''

Did anyone else catch the Dirty Projectors yesterday (or at any point during their summer tour with TV on the Radio)? How did you think the band fared live? You can cheat by watching a YouTube clip of yesterday's "Stillness" performance below:

New Coldplay video for "Strawberry Swing": Watch it here!

Coldplay, no strangers to conceptual clips, have taken Viva La Vida's "Strawberry Swing" in a whimsical, animated direction in the song's new video.

Watch! As Chris Martin the costumed superhero fends off projectile arrows from a giant mad squirrel with a rainbow umbrella. Shriek! As he battles an army of skulls perched atop single lady-legs, armed with his trusty boat paddle. Marvel! As he floats through a cityscape in what look likes an outfit torn straight from the Garanimals catalogue. (Seriously, who wrote this treatment, Willy Wonka?).

Anyway, enjoy it all below, and tell us how it holds up in the Coldplay video cannon, on the continuum from "Yellow" (rainy-beach Handycam simplicity!) to "Viva La Vida" (rococo, painterly high-art!):

UPDATE: You can chase fan-posted clips of the video on YouTube as EMI continuously removes them, or you can see "Strawberry" in full, sanctioned form right here on the official Coldplay website.
