Chris Brown apologizes for assaulting Rihanna

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Four weeks after pleading guilty to assaulting former girlfriend Rihanna in a February incident, Chris Brown has issued his first public apology in a video statement first obtained by TMZ. Addressing the camera directly while wearing a simple red shirt, the singer makes statements including the following:

  • “I’m not going to sit here and make any excuses… What I did was inexcusable.”
  • “I wish I had the chance to live those few moments again, but unfortunately I can’t.”
  • “I am very sad and very ashamed of what I’ve done. My mother and my spiritual teachers have taught me way better than that.”
  • “I have told Rihanna countless times, and I’m telling you today, that I am truly, truly sorry that I wasn’t able to handle the situation differently and better.”
  • “As many of you know, I grew up in a home where there was domestic violence, and I saw first-hand what uncontrolled rage could do. I have sought and I am continuing to seek help to ensure that what occurred in February can never happen again.”
  • “What I did was unacceptable, 100 percent. I can only ask and pray that you forgive me, please.”

Watch the video (below) to see what Brown has to say for himself, then let us know: What do you think of his apology? Are you ready to forgive Chris Brown for beating Rihanna?

Pearl Jam's new single, 'The Fixer': Who's ready for a dance party?

Filed under: News and tagged:

Pearl Jam’s new single “The Fixer” got shipped to radio this morning. It’s the second song we’ve heard off their upcoming Backspacer“Got Some” debuted at the same time as Conan’s Tonight Show — and it’s quite possibly the poppiest thing the band has ever done. Like, try not to bounce up and down in your chair.

Michael Jackson: Sony nearing deal for feature film using rehearsal footage

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

There's a bidding war going on for big-screen rights to Michael Jackson's final rehearsal footage, and according to reports in Variety and the Los Angeles Times, Sony Pictures is close to sealing the deal with an offer of over $50 million. AEG Entertainment reportedly has up to 80 hours of footage from Jackson's rehearsals for his planned "This Is It!" comeback concerts, which he continued working on through the day before his June 25 death. In addition, the feature film — which could be out as soon as this fall — would reportedly include interstitial videos shot for the concert series. High School Musical director Kenny Ortega, who helped plan the concerts and shot the footage, is rumored as the feature film's potential director; he's also set to direct "a prime-time television special based around staging and choreography that Jackson personally created" for the concerts, according to the Times.

Given the quality of the brief rehearsal clip that was released early this month (below), this sounds to me like a movie worth watching. One of the saddest things about Jackson's untimely passing is that it robbed us all of the chance to see what he had planned for those London dates — something that a well-done film edited down from that mountain of rehearsal footage might help address. But what do you think? Would you pay to see a movie based on Michael Jackson's last rehearsals, wait until it hit DVD, or skip it altogether? Tell us why in the comments section.

New live track from Gloriana, 'The Way It Goes,' streaming exclusively on EW's Music Mix!

gloriana_l

I promised I’d always be honest with you, Mixers, and I don’t intend to quit now: Gloriana’s cloyingly perky first single, “Wild at Heart,” makes me want to stab Care Bears.

So how surprised was I by this laid-back live version of “The Way It Goes,” a track off their upcoming Aug. 4 debut? Very. Decided it would be wrong not to share it with you. Also because I suspect no matter how many Care Bears have to die, this photogenic country foursome is on its way to next-big-thingism.

Recorded while on tour with Taylor Swift — that’s gotta be a coveted opening slot — this live cut is one of three bonus tracks listeners can find on the deluxe version of the self-titled album, available for pre-order on iTunes this coming Tuesday.

Give a listen below, check out the official video after the jump, and let us know in the comments: Should Little Big Town start watching their backs?

'New Moon' soundtrack: Will Thom Yorke and Kings of Leon contribute? And who else should?

Yorke-Twilight_l Speculation about who will appear on the New Moon soundtrack heated up this week after director Chris Weitz dropped a few big names to a RottenTomatoes.com interviewer: “The criterion will still always be what’s right for the movie at that given moment, but Thom Yorke is interested; we might, if we’re very lucky, get Kings of Leon to do something.” Well, well!

But don’t get too excited just yet. Yorke’s camp would neither confirm nor deny the Radiohead frontman’s reported involvement to EW at this time. The Kings of Leon connection, meanwhile, seems even more tenuous. “Not as of right now, no,” KoL lead singer Caleb Followill tells EW’s Whitney Pastorek when asked if his band will contribute to the Twilight sequel. “I haven’t had any time to write any music, we’ve been so busy… I would have to write a song in my hotel room, which I think we might could do, but I don’t know. As of right now I’m more focused on getting some rest and writing another album.”

Oh well. For now, at least, sounds like the New Moon soundtrack field is still very much wide open. It’d be a choice gig for any up-and-comer, considering how successful the first Twilight film’s soundtrack was. So whose tunes would you like to hear in the next teen-vampire flick this fall? Sink your fangs into some suggestions in the comments below.

Open Happiness: Best supergroup ever! Except for the product placement!

openhappiness_l

Wow. Have you heard this awesome new collaboration between Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy, Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco, Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes, Cee-Lo, and the wonderfully spacey Janelle Monae? The band is called Open Happiness, and their self-titled debut single can be heard on their MySpace page; it’s got Flaming Lips guitars and a catchy singalong chorus buoyed by verses from each of the members, all of whom are totally capable of selling American-Idol-winner’s-single-worthy lyrics like “the bridge between us is a rainbow.” Open happiness, indeed! Tinted Windows, you just got served!

Wait.

Is this a Coke ad?

Crap.

Okay, I’ve been successfully duped — and subsequently a little disappointed. What about you, Mixers? Do you mind the corporate crossover, or just hope this quintet cuts another single soon? And is this a better song than “I’d Like To Buy the World a Coke” (or the criminally underrated “I’m a Pepper”)?
