MTV's famous 'TRL' studio in Times Square: R.I.P.?

Tags: , , News

According to a New York Post business story today, MTV may be saying goodbye to its famous Times Square studio, the space that served as a home to flagship shows like TRL.

Landlord SL Green has reportedly put the one-million-square-foot-plus space on the market after MTV parent company Viacom failed to renew the lease. TRL, of course, shuttered its doors last November after a decade-long run, but the loss of the studio would definitely signal the end of an era.

What will you miss if the famous spot is no more, Music Mixers? Did you ever stand on the sidewalks below with other superfans, waiting for your most cherished Backstreet Boy/former Beatle/Tokio Hotel porcupine to arrive for a guest appearance? Did you draw cursive “Mrs. VJ Jesse Camp” loops in your Trapper Keeper?

Tell us your memories in the comments section below (Mariah meltdown circa 2001! Taylor Swift chatting up Rihanna and Verne Troyer on the studio couch in ’08!), and enjoy Miley Cyrus below on TRL back in 2007, all young and innocent and not humping a pole:

Saw it last September for the first time (last time I was in NYC was in ’94) hopefully whoever rents the space does something interesting with it.

I will be in agreement with you. Time Sqauare doesn’t not need otehr big store or big giant restrant chain. I think museam of pop cultrure will be good in that places.

I remember being there last August when Tokio Hotel was there. Best experience EVER. It’s too bad that I’ll never be able to have that same experience again. :(

I got to see TRL in ’06. Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth, and Rosario Dawson were on. Pretty fun. Got to see Superman for free in the WB building.

I will miss the TRL studio!!! I am so thankful that I was a part of the studio audience for Tokio Hotel week back in August last year!!! Definitely, one of the best moments of my life!

When I was younger, TRL was the show I’d watch as soon as I came home from school!

Perhaps, MTV will replace it with an even better music-based show!!!

I remember the first time I went to New York City’s famous Tim Square I walked by the studio, and happened to run into Train. I also remember when Carson Daily ran the show not the VJ’s or DJ’s, and coming home from school missing the first some odd minutes of the show. The last time I went to New York City I walked by the TRL studio to find it empty sincerely of disappointing. I guess that is what happens when reality shows beat actual music, and the music being released gets worse.

  • hotels Times Square

they will continue to build hotels or convert buildings, in this case to accommodate the large number of people this area attracts.

Great Post as always. I must admit I have popped in a read a good number of your blogs but I have no idea how to post a response over there, so I’ll tell you now how good you are at describing the stuff your at – I must admit I find it insightful to read your blogging. Keep up the good work.
