Glenn Beck: You'll never guess who his favorite band is

You probably know Glenn Beck as, for better or worse, one of the nation’s most popular right-wing commentators. But were you aware that he’s also a total alt-rock fan? Via Stereogum, we learn that the Fox News host played “Uprising,” the current single from the pretty solid British band Muse, on his radio show last Friday. Beck’s website even refers to “Uprising” as “a new, powerful song from one of his favorite bands.” Who knew!

And so Beck joins Twilight author Stephenie Meyer in the apparently crowded ranks of famous Muse heads. I guess this revelation means I should revise my longstanding personal opinion of this guy: While I’ve always thought of him as a hate-spewing loser, now I’ll have to consider him a hate-spewing loser who has decent-ish taste in music.

Check out “Uprising” below, and let us know: Are you surprised to learn how much Glenn Beck loves Muse? What do you think it is about Muse’s music that makes so many celebs dig them?

I feel like I could have been happier not knowing this news. But I won’t get too combative…Beck and I finally have something in common!

  • megan

funny how glenn beck is a “hate spewing loser” and yet keith olbermann say same thing just from the left perspective and people think he is just reporting the news!! The majority of the left are hypocrites.

    • Steve Dupuis

So, do you believe that Beck is reporting the news? Beck is such a phony

    • BK

If it comes down to believing John Stewart and Keith Olbermann versus Bill O’Reily and Glenn Beck, I’ll take the ones with humor and a heart any day of the week.

  • Mojo

Who would have F***ING thought!! Although im happy he didnt say radiohead because as we ALL know they are better than MUSE.

  • topazbean

Well, they are a band who inspire obsession, but this is deeply depressing. Also…I’m assuming he just doesn’t listen to the lyrics since half of Black Holes and Revelations was patently anti-Bush

    • Blinonat

If you knew anything about Glenn Beck, you’d know that he is not a “Bush fan” at all.

  • shakespeare

Muse sucks anyway! There just a BIG rip-off of RADIOHEAD mixed with some U2!

  • TJ

Although Beck is overdramatic at times, I think it’s a bit of stretch to call him a “hate-spewing loser”. In fact often his arguments are pretty on point…you just have to ignore the theatrics.

    • David M

Actually I think he’s brilliant with the theatrics. It’s his logic that’s lacking. I don’t watch his fox show much but I listen to him every morning. I love his style but his substance is nonsensical.

I can’t say I’m too familiar with Muse, but this song wasn’t too good in my opinion. But I can see how Beck would respond to it, with its vague depictions of refusing to succumb to dark forces. This song probably runs through his head as he imagines himself overcoming racism and totalitarianism.

Next we’re gonna hear that Rush Limbaugh is major Jay Z fan!!!!!

    • Alex

Jay-Z is just this side of C-Murder,just this side of the bars-on his knees.

  • Charlie

Radiohead?!? No, Muse hardly sounds like radiohead at all. If people would only listen to their songs they’d see that radiohead is very airy and decidedly more down-to-earth. Muse is completely off the face of the planet, they make a much greater sound (which is also completely DIFFERENT).

    • S.O.

agreed. The singer alone somewhat sounds like Thom Yorke but MUSE overall sound is nothing compared to Radiohead. I find MUSE more comparable to the likes of Queen, ELO, a few other bands that try to sound more theatrical.

  • bwilder

Funny, I would have thought his favorite band would have bee Tears for Fears?

  • Melissa

As I began to read this post I was hoping that I wouldn’t read that he was a Muse fan. Based on their last album and its content, I wonder how Matt Bellamy feels about this news.

  • Brady

I’ve noted for some time Glenn must be a Muse fan. He’s used Muse riffs as ad-to-show fill music in his radio program for several years.

  • rbk

Beck trying to be cool with the kids. That’s all. The sooner this hyper-spastic piece of excrement is off-air the better.

  • Joe

Yeah…this is pretty much Beck trying to be hip and edgy…he doesn’t get Muse or what they’re about. If he did, he wouldn’t be listening. Muse is arguably the best band in the world and Beck is definitely one of the biggest wackos out there!

  • Oliver Jenord

I wish i had never read this article Glenn Beck is a fascist idiot, don’t know much about him because i live in england but he sounds like a noob. Muse rule

    • Kevin

Do you even know what a fascist is? (you should, England is full of them) You are a complete moron! Listen to yourself…”Glenn Beck is a fascist idiot, don’t know much about him …..”. Shut the he** up and don’t pass judgment on others until you educate yourself. Now go back upstairs, I think your mom’s calling you.

      • Ed

Couldn’t agree more Kevin. I’m not the biggest Beck fan by far but that’s due to the dramatics and not his message but these idiots have no clue what they’re talking about, have never listened to him and are only doing what the media tells them to do. Thanks Kevin
