Jason Mraz's 'I'm Yours' smashes Billboard record, remains totally unkillable

Categories: Let's Argue!, News

The four-minute ditty that Jason Mraz dubbed “his happy little hippie song” shattered a pretty serious record this week — at 70 weeks, it’s now the longest-running song on the Hot 100 chart in Billboard’s 51-year history. Suck it, LeAnn Rimes! Your 1998 monster ballad “How Do I Live” now takes sloppy seconds.

According to Reuters, it’s also the only track to reach No. 1 on each of the following four radio-based charts: Mainstream Top 40/Pop Songs, Adult Contemporary, Adult Top 40, and Triple A. It has also found its way to charts for Latin Pop(!) and Smooth Jazz, and debuts this week at Rhythmic. (Admits the singer: “Perhaps the song is genre-less. The first two and a half minutes have so little production you could almost classify it as spoken-word.”)

Reader, are you finding Mraz as m-rad as you did nearly one and a half years ago? Do you think it deserves to take the spot from LeAnn and other long-runners like Carrie Underwood (“Before He Cheats,” 64 weeks), Jewel (“Foolish Games/You Were Meant for Me,” 65 weeks), Lifehouse (“You and Me,” 62 weeks) and, Lord help us, Los del Rio (“Macarena,” 60 weeks)?

One more time, lest you have forgotten (or your copy got so hot that it melted), here it is:

“I’m Yours” was a great song the first time I heard it and I’m still listening. Been a Jason Mraz fan a long time. Glad he’s getting the recognition.

  • sfday

I loved the first time I heard it, and even now, after all this time, every time I hear it start I think I’m going to be sick of it, but find myself loving it just as much.

  • Joey Jo Jo

Jason Mraz is a hack. I’ve never liked anything he did and this song in particular makes me change stations immediately.

    • Riss

I would like to see you write a song that does as well as one of Jason’s! If you don’t like him, why are you reading this article?

  • Heather

After hearing this song for about 4 years now (it’s that old) I’m getting tired of it.

    • Casey

Yeah I liked the original version of the song that was out about 4 years ago or so. I can’t believe the song’s longevity.

I prefer his older stuff, especially the material he did before his first studio album.

  • Philly Girl

Didn’t really care much for his music until this song came out. Liked it the first time I heard it and still love it. I leave it on the radio and turn it up everytime it is on.

  • beb

The song slides down to #29 this week. I give it four more weeks on the Hot 100 (per chart policy, the song will be removed once it falls below #50).

    • Dark Dot

But two weeks ago it was in the 30s and the remix has now brought it to urban radio; I’d say 4 weeks is underestimating…

  • Veronica

Not a huge Mraz fan, but he sure did it with this feel good song. It is like Sara Lee. Nobody doesn’t like it…and if you say you don’t, you are probably just trying to be cool, but are really just a douche.

    • Jane

Love your logic: if you don’t agree with the majority, then you are a douche. Grow up. That song is grating.

      • Veronica

Sheesh! I kid, I kid, I make a little joke. The world needs miserable people too to keep it all interesting. Thanks for representing.

      • PJ

Veronica, love that response! People can’t take a joke in this country anymore…it’s a lost cause…

      • Brian C.

Veronica – don’t quit your day job to become a comic.

  • Angela

Love the song and love the album. I still listen to it when it comes on the radio. It’s def. one song that I don’t actually get tired of listening to.

  • Tim

Further reason to turn OFF your radio.

  • Rick

    I love this song!

  • Korina

Jason is a rare talent. Listen to some live versions of any of his songs and you’ll be so glad you did!

    • Gary

Being an old geezer (68), the first time I heard I’m Yours was on Today Show, 8/7/09. Since then I’ve been playing and replaying the clip from MSNBC. Best version I’ve come across.

  • Bobbie

I liked it the first few times, but then it just simply drove me crazy, every time I turned on the radio, there it was, annoying me like a neighbor that when you meet the first few times you think what a lovely person, and then the more you get to know it the more you realize you are sick of it.And for those who say that they listen to it now and feel like they still love it,be honest, you know that it drives you crazy too, even a little bit.

    • matthew reiter

      Um, no

    • Laura

Can’t admit it. I love it. Love him! He’s a great singer with wonderful, positive energy.

  • Todd

He totally deserves it. Rarely does a song make me feel happy the instance I hear it, but this one really does.

  • Jay

This song is the only one that deserved this amount of time on the charts.
Those others are… well… I have serious doubts about the publics musical opinions based on those other songs that lasted on the charts.

    Carrie Underwood??? Jesus! what crap!

  • JP

He wrote it and played the instrumentals. This song became popular because it’s good. Not like that “Before He Cheats” crap that gets shoved down everyones throat.

  • argem

I Love everything Jason Mraz!!! Specially when he sings live. If you didn’t like Jason before, listen to any song sung live and you’ll be hooked. Now I’m onto his live version of “If It Kills Me.”

    • Sailor

Argem – Check out “If It Kills Me” (from the Casa Nova Session. Brilliant.

As far as Jason goes, he is super talented and I am glad that he is getting recognized.
“I’m Yours” is a great song to hold this title. Very positive message.

  • sarahp

Happy that this song broke the record. I really liked it when I first heard it, and it remains as one of my top-played songs on my iPod. It makes me feel happy right away, and I assume that some other people might feel the same.

  • kennedyDC

you mean his knock-off of “don’t worry, be happy?” i think it sucks.

  • Levente

Jason Mraz is more talented than well more than half the artists out there. His live shows are amazing and he really is a wonderful singer/performer/artist. I am so happy this song exploded for him. Now if only people would pick up on the other great songs from this cd (or an older one for that matter). Details in the Fabric, anyone??? It’s gotten me through some rotten days.

    • Tiff

I agree Levente, ‘Details in the Fabric’ is a fantastic. song. This also raises a question, why isn’t James Morrison a bigger draw here in America. I saw him here a couple of years back and he was fantastic. And his follow up CD ‘Songs for you, Songs for me’ was great if not better that ‘Undiscovered’.

  • Jean Genie

I love the song. I think JM makes beautiful music. But I also think this record isn’t going to last forever, so I’m not that excited. Congrats to the star anyway.

  • Snarf

I first heard it last summer (so I naturally thought that’s when it came out) If I ever get married, this is THE song.

  • Shelley

I really like this song myself,it was my ring tone for a looongg time. I think it is the lyrics that make it so meaningful to me. It is just a damn good song.

  • Tom in STL

I don’t think I will ever get sick of this song. It came out a few months after I went on vacation in Hawaii and it takes me back to that trip every time I hear it.

  • Jimmy Willis

Been a fan of Jason Mraz every since his first CD dropped. I am glad that he has had success and hope that Butterfly gets released as a single…b/c it is sweet!

  • annie

It’s a happy, sweet song and he is sexy.

  • The Book

I bet he gets a lot of chicks with this tune. Lucky bastard.

  • JackJack

The ‘Hawaiian’ version by “Ten Feet” is way awesome and a nice little change-up from the original. It’s on youtube and on iTunes in the “world” genre. Plays on Hawaiian radio non-stop. I was tired of the song but then heard it this way and I like it again!!

  • The Book

The song is not good. Did you also see how much money Transformers 2 made? There is no accounting for taste.

  • ben

    This song is so gay.

  • hannah

Its a happy song. I like to listen to it when I feel down. It usually brightens my day. It could very well be genre-less. I can’t quite call it a pop song, R&B, alternative rock, or much of anything else. Its just a good song.
