Mike Posner: The next white mixtape star?

Fresh-faced suburban white kid loves hip-hop, goes off to higher ed and makes mixtapes on the side, lands major-label record deal before graduation. The Asher Roth Story? Au contraire!

Well, actually, it is the “I Love College” rapper’s tale, in a nutshell, but it’s Mike Posner’s, too. The 21-year-old Southfield, Michigan, native is about to start his senior at Duke University, where he majors in business and sociology and possibly beer pong (yep, he’s a frat boy); he’s also got a newly-minted contract with J Records, collaborations with Kid Cudi, Kanye protege Big Sean, and Wale under his Abercrombie belt, and an official debut due in 2010– as well as another mixtape to follow his first, this spring’s A Matter of Time.

Vocally, he also sounds a little bit like Macy Gray and Jason Mraz had a baby. But that is neither here nor there! Judge Posner’s lyrical skills for yourself below:

What’s your call, Music Mixers — Great White Hope, or gone in a minute? He’s  up to nearly three million plays on his MySpace and touring through nationally through late October, so clearly, somebody’s listening…

This kid got a deal off this song.. I mean Roth is pretty Nasty so I can see where his appeal is butI don’t know about this guy. That beat was whack. The only thing he had going was a catchy hook. I know whit kids in Staten Island who are mking better records then this..Check out Dukes Mike Checks, and Incite on myspace.

Personally this isn’t my favorite song of Mike’s – just YouTube some of his other stuff and I guarantee you’ll love it

Yeah, because you get cosigned by Don Cannon AND Mike Boogie, Bun B, Wale, Kanye and Big Sean by making wack beats.

This article fails to mention that Mike’s a killer producer and that while he enjoys performing he doesn’t pretend that he’s got a great voice (that’s where Eric Holljes comes in). Other than that, glad to see more press and more people getting exposed to Posner!

I agree with B3. I’ve been bumpin a Matter of Time for months now. I like better than Asher Roth. He’s a great young producer, but everybody seems to be sleeping on that part since he’s got his deal.

this kid is wack. he cant sing. no one wants a fake white tpain. no one is gonna want to listen to this for a whole album. Saw him at SOB’s. bad show

Posner is dope and entertaining as anything. I agree with B3, as this fails to mention how good a producer he is. There are so many great songs he’s been on by different artists: like “Who Knows?” by Big Sean (also on his first mixtape)and “Wonder Why” by Wale. Plus his cover of “kiss me through the phone” topped the original and his remix with kid cudi of that 3OH3 song made it listenable. Can’t wait to hear more. Just downloaded a new remix he is on with XV and Bun B.

First off, Mike is not necessarily a rapper. He is an Urban Singer who ventures in to both hip-hop and po genres. The dude is amazing. It’s unfair to compare him to the likes of Asher Roth or anyother white rapper, because he does not rap. He has a unique, refreshing style all his own and I have been listening to him since he dropped A Matter of Time (Top 10 mixtapes of 2009 IMO)Has worked with all the new up and coming artists from Big Sean,Wale, XV and Kid Cudi to underground rappers like Saigon and better known rappers like Bun B. The dude is also one of the hottest producers out. Don’t sleep on my man Mike P.

i’ve been listening to his stuff for a while now and i really like it. i like him more than most of the mainstream rap out there. hope he gets bigger

He’s one of my best friends and since age 14 there wasn’t a doubt in my mind that he would be dominant in the music industry one day. Definitely a “great white hope” if you will.
