Fabolous on 'Chelsea Lately': Sex, drugs, and Twitter

Some time in the last year, E!’s Chelsea Handler quietly became the best hip-hop interviewer on basic cable — or at least the funniest. Take Fabolous’ visit last night to her show, Chelsea Lately. Handler opened by attempting to call Fab out on the unorthodox spelling of his stage name. Then she misread the tracklist of his No. 1 album, Loso’s Way, asking him about the song featuring Kobe Bryant (no such collab exists). Those exchanges might have been annoying coming from anyone else, but Handler makes them work by turning her own cluelessness about all things rap into the punchline.

She can pose real questions, too, though. After chatting about the joys of Twitter and the perils of unprotected sex, Handler asked Fab about the February incident in which cops alleged they found a staggering 500 pounds of marijuana on his tour bus. I give her props for bringing that issue up so directly, much like she did with T.I. and his gun charges earlier this year. Fabolous, quick on his feet, asserted his innocence before getting in a quick LOL. “It’s completely ridiculous,” he deadpanned. “Like, anybody who knows me knows I would put the 500 pounds of weed on an airplane. I would never put it on a bus.”

Indeed. Watch their interview segment below in case you missed it (clip via Nah Right). Then let us know: Anyone else catch Fabolous on Chelsea Lately last night? Are there any other rappers you’d like to see swing by Chelsea’s studio?

DJ Quik and Kurupt, 'Hey Playa (Moroccan Blues)': an EW exclusive stream

You may remember old school rappers DJ Quik and Kurupt as pioneers in West Coast hip-hop and old friends, too, having worked together since the days of The Chronic with Dre and Snoop. But it wasn’t until their album June ’09 Blaqkout that the duo officially collaborated on a full-fledged album.

Below, watch EW’s exclusive premiere of the video for the track “Hey Playa (Moroccan Blues),” shot in Los Angeles and the Adelanto desert. Believe it or not, both the music and video was actually inspired by a recent trip the Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmern took to Morocco.

“When he [Zimmern] went to a restaurant,” says Quik. “There was a man playing music, the house musician. He had this little stringed instrument and was strumming it so in-tune with the environment — it was crazy. So I sampled it and put a beat to it and later, Andrew even liked it and let me put it in our music.”

Take a listen, Mixers, and tell us whether or not you’re feeling the latest video from the pair:

Brooks & Dunn call it quits. (Cowgirls, commence crying!)

Categories: Country, Y'all!

brooks & dunn

Late this afternoon, venerable country duo Brooks & Dunn posted the following to their website:

To Our Fans:

After 20 years of making music and riding this trail together, we have agreed as a duo that it’s time call it a day. This ride has been everything and more than we could ever have dreamed …. We owe it all to you, the fans. If you hear rumors, don’t believe them, it’s just time.

We will release our #1s … and Then Some on September 8th and come see you all one more time in 2010, with The Last Rodeo Tour (dates to be announced).

Brooks & Dunn

It’s not often that a group goes out while still ever so much on top:  Kix and Ronnie’s most recent single — the Reba-enhanced “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” — was, in my opinion, just another fine addition to this twosome’s long and gloriously melodic history, stretching all the way back to their incredible 1991 debut, Brand New Man, and those lonesome high school Saturday nights when I’d lie in my bedroom and sob while listening to “Neon Moon” on repeat.

I’m trying to get one of these gentlemen on the phone in the coming days, but until then, watch the video of my favorite Brooks & Dunn track (“My Maria,” which I know is a cover, but it’s so good) and share your favorites and your memories in the comments. Sniff.

The Used, 'Born to Quit': A Music Mix exclusive stream

Categories: An EW Exclusive!

Fiery Utah-bred rockers the Used have been working for months on Artwork, their fourth full-length due August 31 — in fact, it’s their first studio album in over two years. (And an aggro cover of the Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House” on the recent Tranformers: Revenge of the Fallen soundtrack doesn’t count for new, superfans).

But why should you have to wait, Music Mixer? You are a special person, with special access to special things, like this track “Born to Quit,” streaming exclusively here, before its wide release tomorrow.

So what do you think, readers? Are you ready for Artwork?

Pop-chart deja vu: When artists' hits sound a little too familiar

Who doesn’t love a great pop hook — one so deliciously catchy, clever and (let’s face it) lucrative, maybe an artist couldn’t resist using it twice?

Today, Stereogum links to a splice (thanks, Final Cut Pro!) of laconic, Darth-voiced ’80s rapper Tone Loc’s two biggest hits, “Wild Thing” and “Funky Cold Medina” — revealing that they are, essentially, the same song.

Clearly, he’s not the first to get stuck on repeat, as last week’s kerfuffle over Beyonce’s “Halo” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Already Gone” handily proved (for the record, I’m sticking with Not So Much Alike At All on this one — same generic backbeat + different chord progressions, divided by two entirely divergent flavors of belting diva); so did the various plagiarism lawsuits against Coldplay for “Viva la Vida.”

Mostly, this entire post is an excuse to run this vintage (i.e. circa 2007) treasure: See Nickelback’s hits “How You Remind Me” and “Someday” in stereo, below — your Canadian goose is cooked, Chad Kroeger!:

But you tell us, readers: Which artists do you think have accidentally (on purpose?) Xeroxed their own hits — or pilfered best bits from others?

Lollapalooza '09 scene report: Arctic Monkeys, Killers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and more!

Another year, another Lolla — and this time, we’ve got our man on the scene, Burhan Hamid (EW tech wizard by day, alt-fest poo-bah by night! Or at least weekend!) with a full scene report. Read his recap of the long-running annual indie-culture band bonanza below, now narrowed to a one-0ff three-day event in Chicago. Says Burhan:

“The problem with festivals like Lollapalooza is that you have to make difficult decisions throughout the day. Important things like: do we go see Rise Against or TV on the Radio? Tool or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? Santigold or Glasvegas? Use a Porta Potti or…I’ll let that one go. Here’s a recap of some of the bands that my buddies and I got to see on a scorching hot Saturday and even hotter Sunday at Lollapalooza in Chicago’s once beautiful Grant Park:

What's your favorite John Hughes music moment?

The filmography of the late John Hughes is peppered with memorable music moments. Matthew Broderick miming along to the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout” in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Jon Cryer goofing around to “Try a Little Tenderness” in Pretty In Pink. Judd Nelson raising a defiant, “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”-accompanied, fist at the end of The Breakfast Club. Jim Belushi performing “You’re Nobody ’til Somebody Loves You” in Curly Sue.

Okay, so maybe the last one isn’t quite as memorable as the others. Regardless! What’s your favorite John Hughes music moment? How much did the late director’s work influence your own musical taste? And isn’t it about time for a Yello revival? Oh… yeah…
