Juliette Lewis, 'Uh Huh': A Music Mix exclusive stream

You may have to wait another six weeks to see Juliette Lewis on the big screen in the Drew Barrymore roller-derby flick Whip It!, but you can still catch the actress/singer/fashion maverick on the road right now with the Pretenders and Cat Power.

And you, special Music Mixer, can also get a sneak peak at a bluesy, sprawling track from her upcoming third full-length (the first without backing band the Licks), Terra Icognita, produced by the Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and due in stores September 1. Stream “Uh Huh” below:

What’s your take, readers — do you like Julia best on celluloid or in rock-girl mode? What do you think of her Licks-less new sound?

TLC's T-Boz and Chilli to reunite at Justin Timberlake show

The two surviving members of TLC will perform together at an Oct. 17 “Justin Timberlake and Friends” concert in Las Vegas, People.com reports. This marks the first time Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas have played a U.S. show since 2002, the year when bandmate Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes died in a car crash.

Considering just how hugely TLC’s music loomed over the R&B scene in the ’90s, this is a pretty big deal. I know I still miss TLC a little bit every time “Waterfalls” or “No Scrubs” comes on the radio. So what do you make of this news? Are you scrambling to get tickets to Vegas already? If the October show goes well, do you think that T-Boz and Chilli should keep the reunion going — either as a duo, or with a new third vocalist? Weigh in below.

Animal Collective's Panda Bear on new album, ATP fest and more: An exclusive Music Mix Q and A

This year marks the 10th anniversary of All Tomorrow’s Parties, the annual alt-bro bonanza curated by invite-only artists like Thurston Moore, Belle & Sebastian, and Matt Groening (yes, that one).

The Flaming Lips have been anointed the deciders for the 2009 U.S. lineup, taking place in New York’s Catskill mountains this September 11-13 (ticket link here!), and they’ve selected quite a smorgasbord: Headliners include Sufjan Stevens, Animal Collective, the Jesus Lizard, Iron & Wine, Panda Bear, Shellac, the Boredoms, Super Furry Animal, Deerhoof, and of course, the Lips themselves.

Only one man, however, is so nice they booked him twice: Noah Lennox, a.k.a. Panda Bear, of both psych-pastiche champions Animal Collective and his own much-lauded solo output. From his home in Portugal, the Maryland native talks with EW exclusively about his double duties at the upcoming fest, work on the long-awaited follow-up to Person Pitch, and why Sade’s Love Deluxe is the jam.

Entertainment Weekly: Are you ATP experienced, or will this be your first time? Who are you most excited to see?
Panda Bear: We played ATP in the U.K. a year or so ago. It was nice and the vibe around seemed sweet, but I remember we had to go right after we played because it was the start of a tour for us.  I’m actually not the kind of person who goes to see music all that often, and I’d say that has a lot to do with the fact that I’m doing it so much or thinking about it so much that when I’m not involved in it, I’d rather be away from it if I can. I feel like it’s kind of a lame answer, but the things I’m most into at the ATP coming up are the performances by people that I know at least a little bit. So: No Age, Atlas Sound, Grouper, Black Dice, Four Tet and Oneida. Besides those bands, I’d be psyched to see the Boredoms, Boris, and Deerhoof.

Guilty Pleasures, Round One: Hall & Oates (6) vs. Poison (11)

EW’s Music Mix is searching for the Greatest Guilty Pleasure Musical Act of All Time. Note: In case of a tie, please select the artist you feel more ashamed to adore. Thank you.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: The role of Savage Garden will be played by Poison for the remainder of this competition. Savage Garden were forced to drop out due to an unfortunate combination of astute reader response pointing out that somehow we totally forgot to put any hair metal on the list — a truly egregious oversight we hope has now been sufficiently remedied — and because certain proprietors of the Guilty Pleasures game could not come up with anything interesting to write about Savage Garden. The Music Mix regrets any confusion, and encourages fans of Savage Garden to leave their aggravated feedback about how the band is so totally not a guilty pleasure in the comments anyway.

Don Was on his new 'Outlaw Country' radio show, having Brando for a neighbor, and touring with Paula Abdul. An EW Exclusive!

DON-WAS_lDon Was is not the most obvious choice to host a country radio show. True, the Grammy-winning producer has worked with Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson (whose Was-masterminded album Closer to the Bone is out September 29). But the Detroit-born musician admits that he is “truthfully, an r&b guy” and, in many quarters, he is still best known for his idiosyncratic pop-funk outfit Was (Not Was).

Yet, on Saturday, August 29, at 10pm ET, Was will broadcast the first in a series of weekly shows called The Motor City Hayride for Sirius XM’s Outlaw Country channel. According to host Was, however, this isn’t going to be the most obvious of country showcases. “I’ve got an Iggy Pop song and a Conway Twitty song on the first show, so it’s pretty broad,” he explains. Was also intends the show to highlight Detroit, a city that, he says, is more of a country-loving burg than you might imagine. “It hasn’t spawned a lot of artists that have gone on to national fame in the country and western field,” he admits. “But there’s a huge audience for it. After World War Two, people flocked to Detroit from the south looking for gigs in the auto factories. I just want people to know that the city keeps going. It’s experiencing an economic disaster. But people are having fun and it’s actually a really nice place to live.”

After the jump, Was recalls having Marlon Brando as a neighbor, backing Iggy Pop, and the time Was (Not Was) made the mistake of supporting Milli Vanilli and Paula Abdul.

Jay-Z disses Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh in 'Off That' featuring Drake: Hear it here

Categories: Drake, Jay-Z, Leaks

So you think you’re all cool and hip, huh? Well, you are not as cool as famous rappers Jay-Z or Drake — and you are certainly not as cool as Jay-Z and Drake together. This is the central thesis of “Off That,” the newly leaked Drake collab from Jay’s upcoming The Blueprint 3, and it’s hard to argue with. Just accept it: Whatever cutting-edge trends you think you’re inventing, Jigga and Drizzy already discarded as played-out years ago. Facts are facts.

The fizzy beat behind “Off That” comes from Timbaland; while he and Jay-Z have done more ground-breaking work in the past, those two are evidently still incapable of creating a bad track when they team up. Drake’s contributions to the song are limited to the hook, which he handles competently. And Jay? His ever-changing flow is on point as per usual, and he even sneaks a few smart lines into what is essentially a silly flossing anthem: “Please tell Bill O’Reilly to fall back/Tell Rush Limbaugh/To get off my balls/It’s 2010, not 1864!” I love party jams that come with stealthy political undertones, so I just about stood up and clapped when I heard that verse.

Listen to the leaked version of “Off That” below (some NSFW lyrics), and tell us: How do you like it? What do you think of Jay-Z’s latest lyrical shots at right-wing talking heads? Does this leak make you more or less excited for the Sept. 11 arrival of The Blueprint 3?

UPDATE: If that’s not enough Jay-Z/Timbaland action for you, another new Tim-produced Blueprint 3 cut called “Reminder” just leaked. Despite a somewhat irritating hook, it is possibly even catchier than “Off That.” Don’t miss Jay’s jabs at “all rhymers/with Alzheimer’s”!

Karen O and the Kids' 'Where the Wild Things Are' track debuts on MySpace

They may no longer be a couple, but director Spike Jonze and Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O continue to collaborate. Their latest project? His much-anticipated live-action film version of the classic children’s book Where the Wild Things Are, due in theaters October 19.

O’s first song for the soundtrack, “All is Love,” bows today online (you can buy it digitally on iTunes starting tomorrow), and you may be familiar with a few of the Kids along for the ride: among them, YYYs bandmates Brian Chase and Nick Zinner, Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox, Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age, Aaron Hemphill of the Liars, and Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs, the Dead Weather). Plus, some real lower-case kids in the choir.

Stream the track now on their MySpace, and watch the preview (with its Arcade Fire “Wake Up” accompaniment) below. What’s your take on the whole enterprise, readers — childlike wonder or childish one-off?

An EW Exclusive video: Band of Skulls gets 'Honest'

Band of Skulls! Two out of three music supervisors recommended that band to EW when we surveyed them to discover your next musical obsessions, so you know they’ve gotta be good. Now the Music Mix is pleased to bring you this performance video from the British trio: It’s a pared down version of their bittersweet ballad “Honest” (off July’s Baby Darling Dollface Honey), and it comes from the kind folks at Yours Truly, intrepid young bloggers who’ve been seeking out and shooting video of terrific under-the-radar acts. Might we have an U.S. equivalent to London’s Black Cab Sessions or the great French Take-Away Shows on our hands at last? One hopes. Dammit, this is America!

Check out the video below, then visit their blog for lots more from Loney Dear, Wavves, Cut Copy and the always precious John Vanderslice. Hooray, internet. And skulls. And bands!
