Taylor Momsen from 'Gossip Girl' has a band, and it's not half bad!

For a band fronted by a 16-year-old, the Pretty Reckless has already accomplished plenty: Star-studded gigs, Twitter feuds with Courtney Love, the works. Did I mention that the Pretty Reckless’ teenaged frontperson is in fact actress Taylor Momsen, best known as Gossip Girl‘s Jenny Humphrey?

So, okay, this fact likely accounts for much of the attention that the Pretty Reckless has received thus far. But! They are also a totally okay band on their own merits, as evidenced by the two new demos just posted on their MySpace. “He Loves You” and “Zombie,” both solidly serviceable tunes, share a catchy grunge-pop vibe. I’m particularly partial to the latter, though that might have something to do with the way its chorus shamelessly shoplifts from Stone Temple Pilots’ “Sex Type Thing.” (Or not: Momsen was born almost an entire year after that song came out. Scary, isn’t it?)

Click over to the Pretty Reckless’ MySpace to give the demos a listen, then weigh in: What do you think of this Gossip Girl‘s musical future?

An EW Exclusive: Maroon 5's Adam Levine goes digital in 'Band Hero'

This November, the nice people who brought you Guitar Hero are upping their game with Band Hero, a slightly more all-ages version of the plastic guitar time-waster diversion, featuring some new technology — especially enticing is “Party Play,” in which folks can jump in and out of songs without worrying about saving world tours or characters or whatever — and tracks far flung from the usual hair metal/radio rock repertoire. Along with music from Jesse McCartney, the Go-Gos, and some chick named Taylor Swift, players will be able to jam out to Maroon 5′s “She Will Be Loved” while a dramatically lifelike Adam Levine performs on screen. (See above. Nice ink!) “It was really a surreal thing going through the whole process,” says the M5 frontman. “They put you in this amazingly dorky suit with lights all over it, which makes you kind of look like what’s-his-name in Running Man, the big fat guy that lit up like a Christmas tree?” [NOTE: No one could remember this dude's name. Please help.] “It’s really surreal lipsynching to your music in a concrete warehouse, with video game programmers staring at you and laughing,” Levine continues. “It’ll be pretty cool to play myself. It’s the height of video game narcissism, being your own avatar.”

Although Levine admits he was originally a bit of a button-pushing naysayer, this version of the franchise appealed to him because “it’s starting to venture out into various genres,” he says. “I’m a fan of so many different types of music, and I just thought it was cool that they were extending beyond their standard rock n’ roll tunes, and going into new areas. Basically, with the record industry being in the state it’s in, it’s nice to have a new and innovative outlet for your music.”

Speaking of, the next Maroon 5 record is still on track for 2010, and it’s currently being recorded in an undisclosed location. (Sorry, ladies.) “I don’t want to spoil it too much,” the frontman says. “But they always say you have your whole life to make your first record, and five minutes to make your second, which is kind of true. I like the second record a lot, I’m very fond of it. I think there are maybe things I would do differently now, if I had a chance to go back. But I think the third one is really great because it’s kind of taking the best elements of both the first and second one, and kind of striking a balance. I always think whatever record we’re putting out is our best one. So this one’s our best one. And our fourth will be better and so on and so forth until we finally reach Wyld Stallyns status.”

R. Kelly feat. Keri Hilson, 'Number One': Yet another crazy sex metaphor

R. Kelly has a new music video out, and you know what that means: Another super-catchy jam built around a ridiculous extended metaphor that somehow involves sex.

Actually, coming from the man who gave us such masterpieces as “Sex in the Kitchen,” “Sex Weed,” and “Sex Planet,” Kells’ new single — “Number One,” a duet with the lovely Keri Hilson — might qualify as subtle. “Having sex with you is like making hits,” he sings to Hilson, adding, “I’m in your mix like a No. 1 record.” Considering how much time R. Kelly probably spends each day thinking about either songwriting or lovemaking, I’m kind of surprised it’s taken him this long to arrive at a concept that unites his two favorite hobbies so neatly. And hey, at least he’s not comparing himself to a Jurassic “Sexasaurus” this time, right?

Watch the “Number One” video below, then let us know: What do you think? How does this measure up to R. Kelly’s most absurd tunes?

Paul Oakenfold on Madonna: new material is 'the sound of tomorrow'

Categories: Madonna

British DJ and remixer extraordinaire Paul Oakenfold would like to clear something up: He has never been naked in a recording studio with Madonna. “That was a joke,” he laughs, referring to Madonna’s April 23rd tweet via manager Guy Oseary’s account (@guyoseary): “paul oakenfold is running around the studio naked.. because i wont put the air on.. its hot in here.. but the music is hotter!!!! -M.”

But Oakenfold, who recently released Perfecto: Vegas, a two-disc set celebrating his popular residency at the Palms Casino, from which he recently took a break to join Her Madgesty’s Sticky and Sweet Tour in Europe, is dead serious about getting people on the dance floor with “Celebration.” The song, which he co-wrote with Madonna for her upcoming greatest hits package (in stores Sept. 29), is he says, “meant to be positive in the respect that you can do it, let’s have a good time, let’s enjoy ourselves.”

And while the song, which leaked online in July, has a party-time feel, Oakenfold tells us that he and “M,” as he calls her, were all business during their first in-studio collaboration. “It was very focused, very professional,” he recalls. “When you step up to this level, it’s an interesting process because you’re on someone else’s time, and you respect that. And that’s really what it’s about. So I was extremely organized when I went in there with the team that I had.”  And he’s pretty proud of the result: “It’s definitely the sound of tomorrow. Which always becomes the sound of today.”

Music Mixers, what do you think — is “Celebration” the music of tomorrow, or a blast from the past? Watch below as a stadium full of fans wish her a happy (51st!) birthday at a concert earlier this week in Poland, and tell us: Does Madge still have what it takes to — with the help of friends like Oakenfold — make the music that helps the people come together?

Harvey Danger Farewell Tour Diary: Chapter Two

You can read Chapter One of Sean Nelson’s farewell diary here. Our story continues…

August 8: Bell House, Brooklyn

You start in a van. If you’re lucky, you progress to a bus, and onward to multiple buses, trailers, semi-trucks. The goal of a touring band, presumably, is to be big enough that making a personal appearance requires a fleet of vehicles and a staff of dozens to make sure your sound is properly dialed in, your sets fully assembled, your spotlight correctly trained. But the real gold standard for band travel is by air. While the road crew is still tearing down the gear and humping it into the ground vehicles, the “talent” is already sleeping on Egyptian cotton sheets in the next town on the itinerary, having soared there immediately post-show, either privately or, if they insist, commercially.

I would like to tell you that is what our trip from Boston to Brooklyn was like. In fact it was like this: Finish show around 2 a.m. Hang out talking to people till 3:30 a.m. Load out and decamp to the very bizarre Days Hotel (not to be confused with the Days Inn, which is a little more deluxe than our budget allows) — whose lobby is bumping with drunken teenage Italian figure skaters (true) — at roughly 4:30. Attempt to decompress from post-show adrenaline until circa 6:30. Lobby call at 7 a.m. to fly to JFK. We flew because we got a deal on tickets and figured it would be worth it to save three or four hours of driving time in exchange for nap time before the show. This was not the Eagles on a Lear Jet. This was five exhausted Seattleites on a Jet Blue shuttle. Regardless of what it was, we were despairing of our decision not to just drive when we made it to New York nine hours later, just in time for sound check. I’ll spare you the details.

Sean’s tour diary continues after the jump…
