I have to tell you, Music Mixers, I am loathe to post this new clip from the Backstreet Boys.
And not for the reasons you think — I’m not at all averse to wanting it that way; Lou Pearlman‘s Orlando pop factory produced some fantastic stuff. But this “comeback” below is giving me a major case of the sads.
First of all, they all look like uncomfortable dads who got dragged to an all-you-can-grab sale at Wilsons Leather. Second, they seem to be making a semi-desperate play for the current vampire saturation in pop culture (also, major shades of the opening club scene in Blade), what with the fangy teeths, red eyes, and Day Walker lore. And third — I don’t know, but their hearts just don’t seem in it.
So yeah, I’m not sure the transition to Backstreet Men is quite a graceful one. But you tell me, readers — especially all you who came out to represent the Boys in our Guilty Pleasures poll –is this the Backstreet evolution you hoped for?

The song isn’t half bad and the fact that now there are only 4 B’Boys can only mean the evolution process is causing their numbers to dwindle.
…are they singing at a biker bar? FAIL.
i liked it. but then i have a soft spot for boy band music.
I’m a huge Backstreet fan, and it makes me upset when people always knock on them. Yeah so there older, WHO CARES! Nobody makes a big deal with other groups whose members are much older, like the Beastie Boys, they’re white rappers and nobody makes a big deal that they’re in their 40s maybe even older. I love this song and they have been making great music for 17 years, longer than most music acts have even been around. Obviously they still have a great and very dedicated fan based on that fact that thousands of their fans voted for them as their Guiltiest Pleausure and plan to keep on voting for them and more importantly listening and buying their music for years to come. I mean if Justin Timberlake can stalk his ex-girlfriend in a video and it be ok, why can’t the Backstreet Boys wear leather jackets and gasp! be in a bar singing? Seriously, and Leah only 2 of them are dads, for future reference check your facts before you post and how you would know if their hearts are in it? The more I’m writing the more upset I get, so I’m just gonna stop.
Holy crap, are you their mom? Anyways, Leah only said they LOOKED like a bunch of uncomfortable dads, and “I DON’T KNOW, but it SEEMS like their hearts just aren’t in it” (attempt at emphasis via capslock is mine, not hers). She never presented any of that as fact; it’s just her opinion. She’s welcome to it, as are you to yours. Personally, I don’t care that they’re making a comeback, but I’m glad they have fans to support them. I was just kind of startled by the intense passion of your post.
well Katja, thats the kind of passion you are going to get from fans who have the boldness to post. Deal with it. Same goes with any artist’s fanbase.
Oh my god. I think this girl is straight from 1997.
For the last time… probably not, but I would hope it’s the last time, THIS IS NO COMEBACK. They never went anywhere. They’ve had albums in 05, 07, and now in 09 and have been touring for the last couple years straight. Obviously their hearts are in it if they’re still doing it. Kevin didn’t leave because of dwindling fan numbers, he left to have a baby and be with his family. And if you include Kevin than that would mean three backstreet dads.
I like it!!
OMG I’d forgotten about the back street boys, I didn’t think they were still performing. *sigh* I still remember fondly the year of “I want it that way” and my obsession with those guys. Now they are a part of my guilty pleasures, ones I loved but don’t admit and sadly I still have most of their songs memorized, seriously when I’m old and senile I’ll still be able to sing “I want it that way” and “Back Street’s Back Alright!”
Ahh what fun I had, that being said it’s time for the BSB to quietly fade away, most people have moved on from the pretty boy icons they used to be.
that is the dumbest thing ive ever heard. what are you doing here on a POLL comment section if you arent a fan?
Well… the millions of fans globally for 17 years & counting, truly enjoy listening to Backstreet Boys vocals & yes, watching them in concert and in videos. Didn’t our huge turnout here, tell you ANYTHING? Not everyone has to enjoy the same kind of music, and preferences are purely subjective. WHY do you feel compelled to force your beliefs on any readers you have here? You are quite biased and unfair.
*Sigh* She’s not forcing her beliefs on anyone. She presented her feelings on the subject, provided access to the video in question, and asked your opinion in response. That’s called opening a dialogue. I might personally be more on Leah’s side of this discussion (I really don’t like the attempt at riding on the coattails of this tweetacular vampire pop culture fetish), but I appreciate that there are true and loyal fans who are very excited about their return, so I’m happy for said fans. I just hope their future endeavors are more original.
Haa oops that was supposed to be “tweentacular” since “tweetacular” doesn’t really make any sense!
BACKSTREET BOYS THE BEST
THE SONG IS PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!
I actually like the video. So if you look your age, and are over 25, you should hang it up? Did anyone tell Mick Jagger that cause I could swear I saw him and the rest of those old guys in concert last year. Of COURSE they aren’t the same as the Backstreet Boys-different genre, different completely BUT I don’t measure someone’s ability to perform artistically by what I think they should do but by what THEY want to do-and then I like it or not. I watch it or not. I happen to like this song. I think the video flows well with the song. Their dancing is in context with the story, not a distraction from it. In fact the Boys themselves blend so well INTO the video itself that they do lose a little of the “star” quality. But that isn’t a bad thing. No, not at all. I give these guys 4 out of 5 stars!!! Why not the 5? I want to see that hot new body of Nick Carter and I hate to pout.
That’s exactly what I was trying to say in my response. I didn’t mean to come across as one of those fans who cry and faint at the mere thought of them, because I’m not. I was merely venting, I just found it frustrating that the whole tone of the article was one of reluctance and of “loathe”. Yeah, Leah is entitled to her opinion, she is after all the author of this article.
YEAH THIS IS THE EVOLUTION !!!
This is what entertainment weekly thinks about the Backstreet boys…very sad by the way…
There are plenty newspapers who were more then positive,,,,they have been around since 1993….best boyband ever,,,and this album is already number #1 in japan, Italie en venezuele….other countries will follow….mark my words…KEEP THE BACKSTREET PRIDE ALIVE!
Don’t call it a comeback…they never went anywhere! I’m a HUGE Backstreet Boys fan and I absolutely LOVE this song. The video, on the other hand, leaves something to be desired.
@ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
I had forgotten something..haha you said they are older…yeah duuuuhhh….that is a natural proces…plenty enough artist who are over 40..perhaps rolling stones over the 60….wo wear things at all you can grab sale…
I must be honest..i think this article is written to provocate the
backstreet boys Fans,,,beacuse someone saw the poll and have seen the boys won with more then 72 %….let the evolution come babyyyyyyy
Wow. Was that AJ sporting some serious male pattern baldness? Yeah, that’s not a good look. The song is kind of hot, typical BSB, but when your video is biting off of a decade old Wesley Snipes movie, then something is seriously wrong. And did they really need the whole Vampires for Dummies intro? People who are probably going to be into a BSB comeback are old enough to be familiar with the Blad movies or pick up the general gist from watching the video. And kids young enough to be unfamiliar with one of Wesley’s finer outputs (because the orginal Blade movie was awesome!) are so not trying to hear about the Backstreet Boys. Color me underwhelmed.
I’m totally into their new stuff and I was born in the 90s. Not all BSB fans are old – and I may not be familiar with “Wesley’s finer outputs”, but I am still “so trying to hear about BSB”
The video is cliched, but the song is great. That’s all that really matters. I’ll buy the album when it comes out.
I voted for BSB in the “Guilty Pleasures” poll, but I don’t feel guilty about playing this song. Now that they’re no longer massively popular, putting their newer songs on a playlist is kind of cheeky. Not that many people would think about doing it.
