Lil Mama: Why was she on stage during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' VMA performance?

You know how you can tell this year’s MTV Video Music Awards were extra-crazy/special? Somehow Kanye West vs. Taylor Swift wasn’t even the only unexpected person-leaping-on-stage event last night. No, there was also the odd spectacle of Lil Mama climbing up during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ show-closing “Empire State of Mind,” attempting to join the performance (?), then standing there awkwardly beside Jay and Alicia in a B-girl stance when the song ended.

The incident promptly became a trending topic last night on Twitter. Shout out to tweet-happy rapper Fabolous for making the #lilmamais hashtag happen. “#lilmamais JayZ’s hypeman, she jus got there late,” joked Fab. “#lilmamais the bird that flew outta Lady Gaga’s nest on her face!!” And so on. But all the hi-larious Twitter punchlines in the world got us no closer to what we all really want to know: What on earth was Lil Mama doing on stage at that moment?!

We’ve reached out to Lil Mama and Jay-Z’s camps to see if they can clarify just what happened there. (UPDATE: A representative for Jay-Z tells EW she has “No clue how it happened.”) (UPDATE 2: Read Lil Mama’s explanation for last night.) In the meantime, watch the encounter again after the jump. Lil Mama’s appearance begins around the 5:07 mark. Warning: You may LOL when you see Jay-Z’s understated yet surprised-seeming body language.

What’s your take? Did you appreciate Lil Mama’s unexpected cameo? New Yorkers, would you have done the same to show your city pride if you’d been sitting in the front rows?

    • luke cage

i had no idea who lil mama was until sunday. i feel she ruined the moment and that mtv should have had better security to prevent her or anyone from pulling a stunt like that. she was out of line and rude. she is now up for meatball of the year.

    • NoCanDo

OMG was this the most strangest VMA or what? First Kanye and his vile attack of Taylor, now Lil Mama jumping on stage like she was a crazy fan?

  • Teresa

Jay-Z looked defensive, like he thought she was going to attack him or something. Lil Mam looked like an idiot. It was hella-AKWARD for all us– even those watching…ewww!

    • nyisha

soo true!! it was awkward for all of us…gotta admit it was pretty funny!!!

  • brandi

Do they not have security by the stage? Seems like they’ll let any idiot up there who isn’t supposed to be there.

  • BadDay

Where are the Bouncers – its a wonder how these celebrities can protect themselves during their performances or their time on stage. Glad it was just an idiot move rather than someone trying to hurt the performers

  • Tom Brazelton

Who cares if New Yorkers would have “done the same to show their city pride?” This is EW. Not Gawker.

  • dclady

Lil Mama was/is so irrelevant. Jay-z’s performance was great! Alicia Key was more amazing than I had anticipated. The ending wouldve been so fly without Lil Mama jumping on stage, looking like a crazy teenage fan. To top it off, Lil Mama had the ugliest outfit on (if you can even call it that). She looked like she jumped out of a 7th grade dance in ’98.

    • Leah

Lol!! I swear I said the same year to my bestfriend… 7th grade in 98! But no really, she ruined it =/

  • tammy

LOL! Jay-Z looked @ her like, Really?! And she looked right back at him and was like Yup!

    • CG

She should have repped from her seat. I can understand why she did it; when else would Lil Mama EVER be on stage w/those two? But it was so uncalled for and selfish on her part. Everybody just wants to be seen, regardless if they’re ruining someone elese moment. I don’t have a problem w/social disruptivness/anarchy when you’re truly making a statement against a real injustice or if you’re bringing attn to an ignored plight.. but this??? C’mon

  • Lou89

As a proud New Yorker I would have clapped, sang along, probably danced within the perimeters of my seat..but never embarrass myself and New Yorkers by going up uncalled for

  • Randi

She’s always awkward. I mean, have you seen America’s Best Dance Crew? JC and Shane just sit there and laugh at her the whole time as she mispronounces people’s names and babbles incoherently. She makes me so uncomfortable that I have to watch the show on DVR just to fast forward through her commentary.

    • Shari

YES!!!! that is sooo true i be like you are a baby telling your peers or older people what to do like she even kno what she talking about.

  • Alicia

I was shocked and confused by Lil Mama’s actions. I don’t she is near he level of Jay-Z or Alicia Keys. Her presence ruined the entire performance.

  • harry

ha ha ha that is sooo funny!!!

  • Toarra

That was the best performance of the night!!!!!

  • graeme

My question was…where the heck is security? She never should have made it on stage, and after she did, security should have been up there immediately.

    • Tori

word is she came up the same route as Kanye did
