Lil Mama has issued a statement to explain why she ran on stage during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards. “I did not mean any disrespect towards Jay-Z or Alicia Keys,” the rapper/America’s Best Dance Crew judge says. “I admire them and look up to them as role models. ‘Empire State of Mind’ had my emotions running high. In that moment I came up on stage to celebrate my two icons singing about NY.”
So there you have it. Lil Mama ran on stage because 1) “Empire State of Mind” is a very dope song (true) and 2) it made her want to celebrate two of her icons…by randomly popping up next to them in the middle of a live television performance. Okay!
Does that explanation work for you? Personally, I think MTV might want to invest in a moat around the stage before next year’s awards, just in case anyone else wants to do any impromptu icon-celebrating. Re-live the head-scratching moment again, below, then let us know what you think.

Amen! Her claim to fame I believe was doing a remix of “Girlfriend” with Avril Lavigne. I didn’t even know she was on SYTYCD but then again maybe I would if I watched that show.
She’s NOT on So You Think You Can Dance, she’s on America’s Best Dance Crew. And rather than the Avril remix, she’s more known for her two top 10 hits “Lip Gloss” and “Shawty Get Loose.”
This was a dumb move, but I still will preach that Lip Gloss is a fantastic song that you will only like if you are smart enough to appreciate and recognize the intentionally ludicrous.
