Lil Mama on VMAs run-in with Jay-Z, Alicia Keys: 'I did not mean any disrespect'

Lil Mama has issued a statement to explain why she ran on stage during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards. “I did not mean any disrespect towards Jay-Z or Alicia Keys,” the rapper/America’s Best Dance Crew judge says. “I admire them and look up to them as role models. ‘Empire State of Mind’ had my emotions running high. In that moment I came up on stage to celebrate my two icons singing about NY.”

So there you have it. Lil Mama ran on stage because 1) “Empire State of Mind” is a very dope song (true) and 2) it made her want to celebrate two of her icons…by randomly popping up next to them in the middle of a live television performance. Okay!

Does that explanation work for you? Personally, I think MTV might want to invest in a moat around the stage before next year’s awards, just in case anyone else wants to do any impromptu icon-celebrating. Re-live the head-scratching moment again, below, then let us know what you think.

Lil Mama just wanted to be in the spotlight, and chose her way to do it after not having been invited to do so…

    • Ella

Yeah, if she really just loved the song, she could have just demonstrated her approval by, you know, CLAPPING or something. Like a normal person.

      • Cristela

        LOOLL true

  • Danny

Lil and Kanye need mental help. They have self-awareness levels lower than all the 2 years of the world.

  • paige

    security was really bad there…

    • pam

      it was nonexistent!!!

  • Virgo

I just think that Lil’ Mama got carried away….if you ever hear her talk…all she ever says is how she reps Brooklyn…I guess she figured she could be up there because of her being from NY…hot mess!!!!

    • RZ

Yes. i have seen her cry and act like an idiot on dance crew when brookln is brought up. But having the nerve to get on stage with JayZ and Alicia?? She needs to control herself. Just because she works on MTV as the worst judge on ABDC doesnt give her the right to do what she wants. Especially after Kanye already acted like an idiot. Diddy reps new york too.. u didnt see him gettin up there. She is an idiot.

      • BX

        Diddy is from Mount Vernon.

Not exactly part of NYC is it now?

I dont see Tom Cruise reppin NYC. Syracuse is as much a part of NYC as Mount Vernon.

  • SYR

Jay should have her knee-capped for that. Total disrespect!

    • mscisluv

He even asked her to stand down and she STILL struck a pose with them at the end.

  • PeterBilt The Nature Boy

She is a no talent hack and had no business even getting close to those two. Trashy little scallywag

    • hoops

lil wayne would have shot her lol

  • LipGlossKing

If she was smart she’d wait for Lil’ Wayne, Lil’ Boosie and Lil’ Kim to be on stage…then it’d be a meeting of the Lil’ people :)

    • Charade

      LOL!! Good one :-)

    • diamond Cee

you is so right!you seen what she had on?everybody was looking ok even lady gaga but not lil mama

  • BJohnson

I guess she missed what Kayne’s stage jumping did for him the rest of the night. You looked like a fool. You just were smart enough not to take the mic like Kayne did. We all know that we would have witnessed a serious beatdown, from Alicia…y’all forget she hood too, don’t let the makeover fool you. She’d go straight back to them cornrolls and baggy clothes real quick. LOL

    • JoJo

Alicia Keys isn’t ghetto, she’s from Long Island!

      • cj

Um she’s from hell’s kitchen. Thats far from long island

  • whoisthat

  • Mimi Sunshine

  • renaton

    She was probably high.

    • Tori

can you blame her? that was the only way to fully enjoy this years’ BORING vma’s

      • DanThaMan

        lol true that

  • Allie

I’m sorry, but I have no idea who this person even is, and I consider myself to be somewhat knowledgeable about pop culture. Why are these no-talent celebrities so intent on making everything about them?

    • Steve

Amen! Her claim to fame I believe was doing a remix of “Girlfriend” with Avril Lavigne. I didn’t even know she was on SYTYCD but then again maybe I would if I watched that show.

      • Fatima

She’s NOT on So You Think You Can Dance, she’s on America’s Best Dance Crew. And rather than the Avril remix, she’s more known for her two top 10 hits “Lip Gloss” and “Shawty Get Loose.”
This was a dumb move, but I still will preach that Lip Gloss is a fantastic song that you will only like if you are smart enough to appreciate and recognize the intentionally ludicrous.

  • Andrew

You would think that there would be some kind of security there. One person is bad enough. After that you say, “maybe we should step it up”, then a second person? jeez

    • mscisluv

The funny this is it’s the celebrities that are posing the security risk! All of those fans who went on stage with Green Day were perfectly fine!
