Pavement reunion: It's on!

Well, isn’t this just a unicorn wrapped in the Easter bunny and rolled in a Yeti!

A breathless report from Pitchfork today (via a BrooklynVegan post last night) claims that the heretofore-impossible is finally happening: indie-rock godheads Pavement are reuniting for a benefit show at Central Park SummerStage on September 21, 2010 — nearly 11 years after their final live appearance at London’s Brixton Academy on November 20, 1999.

Both articles cite “reliable sources”;  we were justifiably skeptical at first, but now we’ve got confirmation (if not many details) from a very reliable source as well. As more information comes, we’ll keep you posted here (cuz we’re your fact-checkin’ cuz).

Even as recently as 2008, Malkmus himself told EW, “Something small in 10 years like the Zeppelin thing sounds good to me.” Apparently, his timetable has accelerated.

Now, the question is: Is the idea of seeing Stephen Malkmus and co. together again completely Wowing your Zowee, or are you underwhelmed? Me, I’m tentatively letting it Brighten the Corners of my Wednesday morning, but reserving judgment for the real thing, if and when it comes…

In the meantime, watch the band play extras in the movie adaptation of the sequel to their lives (and with that, no more fan-ball refs, we swear), below:

Pavement are the worst act in the history of recoirded sound. They’d have to improve at least ten thousand percent just to completely suck. Please, in the name of all that is even remotely listenable, let this be a false rumor.

What are you, about 16 maybe 17 years old? You are probably used to hearing the instantly recognizable radio riffs of Kings of Leon or Paramore to know what listenable, talented musicians would even write about let alone lip sink. Its not your fault though. Singer song writers don’t exist in this generation, so how could you know what good music was. I hope you figure it out for all our sakes.

Grover, you’re confusing Pavement with the Silver Jews. Malkmus contributed to a couple of their albums, but the blame for the Jews’ infinite suckiness rests solely on David Berman. Thankfully Berman disbanded the Silver Jews this past January. Hopefully he’ll have the decency never to stage a reunion.

That’s a lot of unjustified hate for a great band that pre-dates Pavement. Why not step out of your bubble and see that both bands were great? RIP Joos, welcome back Pavement.

Grover, wow, you must listen to some really dumb music, everyone knows pavement is one of the most influential bands of the nineties, influencing every indie rock band today.

    • Cole9219

WOW. While some people may disagree, I think Pavement was the BESt band of the 90s!!! How could they be the worst act in history?!?!?!?!?!? They were (and still are) one of the coolest things around!!!!

  • UncleWalty

I saw Pavement on the Crooked Rain tour, and they were the best, the absolute BEST live band I have ever seen. They rule.

I agree with Grover 1. Pavement are the worst band ever and suck. I love Rock and Roll and hope that you all understand that Gene told me that Rock and Roll-over would be re-released and I can continue to hate heady indie rock. Peace-out dudes!!

The Silver Jews are awesome. WTF? Every song doesn’t have to be Tennessee. I would bet that Grover skips tracks on albums a lot, and skips to the next song after “the good part” is over.

    • Wagstaff

Tennessee is only a tolerable song when compared to any track off of Tanglewood Numbers. God, what an abortion of an album that is. I’m relieved that poor little rich boy David Berman has moved on to other ways of rebelling against his big evil corporate lobbyist daddy. Too bad his poetry and his comics are just as awful.

    • Wagstaff

Also, since you mention Tennessee, David’s voice is only tolerable when compared to Cassie’s. I know that it’s deliberate, but that doesn’t mean it’s not crap.
