Brit-pop bad girl Lily Allen has been talking about quitting the music business, marrying rich and starting a family for a while now, and her cyber-activity today seems to indicate she’s not joking around.
After telling fans, “I have not renegotiated my record contract and have no plans to make another record” on her anti-music piracy blog It’s Not Alright, she proceeded to delete the entire blog.
She hasn’t cut herself off entirely from the public, however. A few hours later she tweeted, “I’m proud of the fact that that I’ve been involved with this [music piracy] debate,” but said she had to “shut down the blog [because] the abuse was getting too much.”
The flack she’s receiving from fans comes on the heels of a Twitter feud between her and Perez Hilton, which got real nasty when she spoke recently about her desire to have children, and Perez blogged “Lily Allen + Motherhood = Disaster!!!” — knowing full well Allen had suffered a miscarriage just the year before.
Allen acknowledged that suffocating publicity played a role in her decision—her post mentions the “slagging” she has received for her music, her persona and the family connections some people claim are responsible for her fame.
“The days of me making money from recording music has been and gone as far as I’m concerned,” she wrote, which sounds like a fairly final decision, although one her publicist doesn’t seem to agree with. He told NME.com, “She is not quitting pop music. She is not thinking about her next album right now because she is still in the middle of promoting her current record.”
What do you think? Is Lily Allen really done with the music biz? Do you believe her or her spokesman? If she does quit, how much of a role do you think negative press coverage played into her decision? And if it turns out she really is done after a mere two albums, do you even care?

I enjoy Lily Allen’s music. I was lucky enough to see her in concert this year when her tour opened in San Diego. She’s a great song writer, and an amazing performer. I really hope she stays in the biz. I understand her wanting to start a family and live a “normal” life.
How about this;
Perez Hilton + decency = Disaster
I care! I care! Although her second album wasn’t as good and fun as the first, she is a great musical talent.
ENOUGH EW with the expanding ads. It’s bad enough to deal with the giant drop-down front page ads. Now we have to deal with these ridiculous bottom-of-the-screen promos that don’t fully close?? My screen is starting to look like a 24-hour cable news channel.
I like Lily Allen, she shouldn’t get discouraged cause trash like Perez Hilton throws some insults her way. I hope she comes out with another album, cause her first two are terrific.
I love her music and she is great live. However from her posts it seems like she is onlyin it for the money not for the love of music and that is disheartening.
Her music is great. I bought both her albums and loved them. I hope she makes more.
I’ve bought and thoroughly enjoyed both of her albums — I’d say it is a shame that she seems to care more about whether or not she’s successful and what other people think of her than about simply creating music for the joy of it.
Maybe if she were to drop out of sight for a while and then come back, she might feel differently. But even if she were to never make another record, she would be leaving behind two very good ones.
Oh dear! poor deluded souls that you are! lol
Ms Autotune didn’t even sing on the first album, it was a session singer! A close friend knows one of the runners who worked on the album for a crappy 100 GBP a week! Let’s hear her ’sing’ without pitch correction… go on Lilly…. i DARE ya! lol
Good bye and good riddance to a spoilt little self deluded ignorant bunny boiler!
Do you actually think anyone believe this? ‘A close friend’? Please.
Not true. A radio station in the DC area (WTGB)interviewed her backstage at Bonnaroo, and and the end of the interview she sang Smile with only a keyboard for accompaniment. She has a lovely voice.
I LOVE LILY ALLEN she is a great person!!!!
Lily’s an astroturfed manufactured pop princess with a silver spoon in her mouth. Her MySpace page had us believing she was some kind of working class girl with a deprived childhood, when she’s actually public school educated & the daughter of a very successful actor, Keith Allen, who pulled strings to get her a deal with EMI. She doesn’t represent any of the struggling independent artists who benefit hugely from filesharing: she’s a sock-puppet for EMI, who really need to move with the times & change their business model. IMHO EMI are scared silly that control of what people get to hear will once again go back into the hands of the public. They need to take a look at what Kristin Hersh (Throwing Muses) and Donita Sparks (L7) have been doing with CASHMusic – releasing CC-licensed music for fans to remix, perform themselves, re-write even, as long as it’s atrributed to them & they get a copy to put up on the website, and similarly license the remixes etc. They finance this with an optional subscription fee, which entitles subscribers to varying value-added extras from original artwork up to (if you pay thousands) having Kristin come play in your livingroom. That way everyone benefits, nobody loses out, and nobody gets sued.
That’s a contradiction of everything that happened. Lily Allen wasn’t groomed by her record company at all. She took fifty five thousand pounds for her first deal, & only made money off of doing live performances. During a family holiday in Spain, she stayed behind & met George Lamb (her first manager) Lily Allen”s father had nothing what so ever to do with her getting into the record business, because he left them when she was 4 years old & did not return. She did live in a council estate until she was 9. You’re bitter because all pop stars fall into that stereo type, Lily Allen is one of the few people that did not.
Why does it seem like it’s always the wealthiest and/or most popular artists who are crusading against piracy?
1. Who cares? She has contributed very little at best.
2. Most people don’t even know who she is.
3. Sounds like a ploy for sympathy.
4. She is definitely leaving the door open.
She’ll probably change her mind when she sobers up.
when when you sober up you’ll realize that she doesn’t have a drinking problem
Well, It’s really not OK, its just not fair! She was supposed to care!
Oh well, apparently its all over.
Good.
