Lil Mama on VMAs run-in with Jay-Z, Alicia Keys: 'I did not mean any disrespect'

Categories: Jay-Z, Lil Mama

Lil Mama has issued a statement to explain why she ran on stage during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards. “I did not mean any disrespect towards Jay-Z or Alicia Keys,” the rapper/America’s Best Dance Crew judge says. “I admire them and look up to them as role models. ‘Empire State of Mind’ had my emotions running high. In that moment I came up on stage to celebrate my two icons singing about NY.”

So there you have it. Lil Mama ran on stage because 1) “Empire State of Mind” is a very dope song (true) and 2) it made her want to celebrate two of her icons…by randomly popping up next to them in the middle of a live television performance. Okay!

Does that explanation work for you? Personally, I think MTV might want to invest in a moat around the stage before next year’s awards, just in case anyone else wants to do any impromptu icon-celebrating. Re-live the head-scratching moment again, below, then let us know what you think.

Categories: Whitney Houston

The Oprah Winfrey Show‘s 24th season is premiering as we speak with the first part of Oprah’s highly-touted exclusive interview with Whitney Houston. It’s the first time the singer has given such a major interview since her infamous 2002 sit-down with ABC’s Diane Sawyer.

Lord knows she’s got a lot to talk about this time. “No topic is off-limits,” Oprah has promised. We should start seeing how that works out in a matter of minutes.

Are you tuning in? What do you think of their interview so far? Let us know in the comments below.

'New Moon': Hear the Death Cab for Cutie single in full

We’ve given you the build-up and the song snippet; now the first single from The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack—Death Cab for Cutie’s “Meet Me on the Equinox”—is finally streaming online.

Singer Ben Gibbard croons about the romantic futility of love (“Let our bodies intertwine/But always understand/That everything, everything ends”), which is sure to be revelatory to anyone under the age of sixteen. Listen below:

What do you think? Is this new Death Cab song worthy of their catalog? Does it suit Twilights vampire angst as well as Paramore’s “Decode” did? Will Twihards start popping up at DCFC shows, to the annoyance of the indie crowd?

Lil Mama: Why was she on stage during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' VMA performance?

Categories: Jay-Z, Lil Mama, MTV, What the...?

You know how you can tell this year’s MTV Video Music Awards were extra-crazy/special? Somehow Kanye West vs. Taylor Swift wasn’t even the only unexpected person-leaping-on-stage event last night. No, there was also the odd spectacle of Lil Mama climbing up during Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ show-closing “Empire State of Mind,” attempting to join the performance (?), then standing there awkwardly beside Jay and Alicia in a B-girl stance when the song ended.

The incident promptly became a trending topic last night on Twitter. Shout out to tweet-happy rapper Fabolous for making the #lilmamais hashtag happen. “#lilmamais JayZ’s hypeman, she jus got there late,” joked Fab. “#lilmamais the bird that flew outta Lady Gaga’s nest on her face!!” And so on. But all the hi-larious Twitter punchlines in the world got us no closer to what we all really want to know: What on earth was Lil Mama doing on stage at that moment?!

We’ve reached out to Lil Mama and Jay-Z’s camps to see if they can clarify just what happened there. (UPDATE: A representative for Jay-Z tells EW she has “No clue how it happened.”) (UPDATE 2: Read Lil Mama’s explanation for last night.) In the meantime, watch the encounter again after the jump. Lil Mama’s appearance begins around the 5:07 mark. Warning: You may LOL when you see Jay-Z’s understated yet surprised-seeming body language.

What’s your take? Did you appreciate Lil Mama’s unexpected cameo? New Yorkers, would you have done the same to show your city pride if you’d been sitting in the front rows?

Janet Jackson single-handedly saves MTV VMA tribute to Michael Jackson

There’s no way MTV would have (or should have) presented the 2009 VMAs without a tribute to the late Michael Jackson, the man who perhaps more than any artist ever, raised the business of making music videos into a rare and delectable art form. But while I can’t be sure how it looked live from Radio City Music Hall, I found the opening three and a half minutes of last night’s celebration played somewhat tepidly from my living-room couch. The hyper-fast cuts of the MTV cameras and the presence of a giant video screen playing “Thriller,” “Bad,” and “Smooth Criminal” made it difficult to focus on the actual dancing taking place on the stage. Yeah, I realize that by playing MJ’s greatest hits in the background, we were able to see just how lovingly his choreography was being recreated right there on the VMA stage — and today’s yoots who may have been unfamiliar with Jackson’s oeuvre (gasp!) got a glimpse of his genius — but the overall effect left me wondering why MTV bothered with the live dancing at all. Seriously, why not just replay a highlight reel of Michael’s most iconic dances?

Thankfully, though, at the 4:15 mark, Janet Jackson came to the rescue, shattering through a safety glass screen to recreate that classic “Scream” dance-off with her big brother. The woman whose “first name ain’t baby” may not have been 100% in sync with the video screen behind her, but so what? She worked that stage harder than an underpaid assistant doin’ overtime, and as tributes go, this was as energetic as it was heartfelt. I predict “Scream” on repeat on my iPod as I head to work this morning.

What did you think of last night’s MJ memorial? Were you touched by Janet’s appearance? And did anyone else get a case of the eeries hearing the line “Oh my God can’t believe what I saw as I turned on the TV this evening” in the wake of Michael’s death?

Kanye West apologizes for interrupting Taylor Swift at the VMAs: 'I'm not crazy...I'm just real.'

Categories: Kanye West, Taylor Swift

Kanye West didn’t even wait until the next morning to apologize for his bizarre behavior during Taylor Swift’s Best Female Video win at tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards. “I’M SOOOOO SORRY,” the superstar wrote in a characteristically all-caps entry on his personal blog, posted before the VMAs broadcast even ended, adding, “I’M IN THE WRONG.” While acknowledging that the 19-year-old Swift is “VERY TALENTED,” West also sought to explain his actions, writing, “WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!!!! EVERYBODY WANNA BOOOOO ME BUT I’M A FAN OF REAL POP CULTURE!!!”

West’s apology post read as follows in full: “I’M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM. I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD’VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED! I LIKE THE LYRICS ABOUT BEING A CHEERLEADER AND SHE’S IN THE BLEACHERS! …………………… I’M IN THE WRONG FOR GOING ON STAGE AND TAKING AWAY FROM HER MOMENT!…………….. BEYONCE’S VIDEO WAS THE BEST OF THIS DECADE!!!! I’M SORRY TO MY FANS IF I LET YOU GUYS DOWN!!!! I’M SORRY TO MY FRIENDS AT MTV. I WILL APOLOGIZE TO TAYLOR 2MRW. WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!!!! EVERYBODY WANNA BOOOOO ME BUT I’M A FAN OF REAL POP CULTURE!!! NO DISRESPECT BUT WE WATCHIN’ THE SHOW AT THE CRIB RIGHT NOW CAUSE … WELL YOU KNOW!!!! I’M STILL HAPPY FOR TAYLOR!!!! BOOOYAAAWWWW!!!! YOU ARE VERY VERY TALENTED!!! I GAVE MY AWARDS TO OUTKAST WHEN THEY DESERVED IT OVER ME… THAT’S WHAT IT IS!!!!!!! I’M NOT CRAZY YALL, I’M JUST REAL. SORRY FOR THAT!!! I REALLY FEEL BAD FOR TAYLOR AND I’M SINCERELY SORRY!!! MUCH RESPECT!!!!!”

What do you think of West’s contrite words? Do you think that this makes up for his outburst at the VMAs?

Kanye West interrupts Taylor Swift's VMAs moment: What was he thinking?

Is Kanye West the new “Soy Bomb”? Moments after Taylor Swift’s win for Best Female Video (“You Belong With Me”) was announced tonight at MTV’s Video Music Awards (check out our live blog), a furious Mr. West ran onstage, grabbed a mic, and interrupted her acceptance speech to announce his belief that Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” deserved that award instead.

Now, we can argue all day and night about whether or not Beyonce was robbed — hey, I like both videos in question — but that was a pretty uncool move on Kanye’s part. We’re talking about a 19-year-old. Let her have her moment! I’m sure an artist as poised and graceful as Beyonce wouldn’t have approved of such obnoxious behavior. And what happened to “I don’t get offended anymore,” Yeezy?

Of course, for all we know we’ll find out tomorrow that this whole thing was a publicity stunt. It sure looked real, though — a whole lot realer than, say, the Bruno/Eminem encounter from this year’s MTV Movie Awards. What did you think of what went down?

Jay-Z 'Answers the Call' in NYC with help from Rihanna, Beyonce, Kanye West, John Mayer and the rest of his Rolodex

“If you’ve ever been to a Jay-Z concert in your life, you know how it goes,” Shawn Carter told New York City’s sold-out Madison Square Garden last night. He was instructing us on the proper pronoun-shouting pattern to employ while he performed “Jigga What, Jigga Who,” but he might as well have been talking about the night’s overall entertainment. Anyone who’d had the pleasure of seeing Jay-Z in concert before knew what they were in for: Back-to-back-to-back hits, a sick live band, and best of all, the supreme master of ceremonies himself. It doesn’t matter if Jay is rapping to a sweaty little club or, in this case, a huge sporting arena plus a live television audience. Either way, he moves the crowd without fail.

Jay-Z's 'Answer the Call' concert: Are you watching the live broadcast?

Categories: Charity, Jay-Z, Television

In just about half an hour, Jay-Z should be taking the stage at New York City’s Madison Square Garden for his “Answer the Call” 9/11 charity concert. Jay invariably brings his A-game to big events like this — and this one’s for a good cause, too, with all proceeds going to the New York Police & Fire Widows’ & Children’s Fund. But don’t despair if you weren’t able to snag a ticket when they sold out in under a minute earlier this week: Fuse TV is broadcasting the whole thing live, starting at 9 P.M. Eastern/8 P.M. Central.

Are you tuning in tonight? Check back on the Music Mix tomorrow for my full on-the-scene review (update: read it here), or post your thoughts during the televised show in the comments section below.
