Patty Griffin sings Cy Coleman (plus details on her next album): It's an EW exclusive!

She teased us with guest spots on two country records this year, backing Dierks Bentley on “Beautiful World,” and Jack Ingram on “Seeing Stars,” and proving herself to be precisely the earthy collaborator these country boys need to cut through Nashville’s oft-oily sheen. But for rabid Patty Griffin fans like yours truly — sitting here waiting since 2007′s Children Running Through for new music – that’s not enough. Thankfully, details on her upcoming gospel album are finally starting to sneak out: Recorded in the Nashville Downtown Presbyterian Church, the current title seems to be, appropriately, Downtown Church. It was produced by Buddy Miller, it’s slated for an early 2010 release, and the folkie’s dream list of guest vocalists includes Buddy, Julie Miller, Emmylou Harris, Shawn Colvin, Raul Malo, and Jim Lauderdale. Amidst the classic gospel songs and hymns, there will be two new songs penned by Patty. And if you head to PattyCentral.com, you can check out some live videos of her performing songs presumed to be on the album. (Hey, Radiohead‘s not the only band with minutia-obsessed fans.)

I’ve scored one more treat for all my fellow Patty lovers: A preview of her contribution to upcoming compilation album The Best Is Yet to Come: The Songs of Cy Coleman. The Great American Songbook composer finds himself lovingly feted by some amazing ladies — besides Patty, the album includes renditions of Coleman favorites from Fiona Apple, Jill Sobule, Madeline Peyroux, Sam Phillips, Nikka Costa, and more. It’s out September 15th, but you can stream Griffin’s mournfully minor-key reinterpretation of the title track right here, right now. Give a listen, and let us know what you think in the comments… and anybody got any more Patty scoop to share?

Backstreet Boys' 'Straight Through My Heart' video: Backstreet's... back?

I have to tell you, Music Mixers, I am loathe to post this new clip from the Backstreet Boys.

And not for the reasons you think — I’m not at all averse to wanting it that way; Lou Pearlman‘s Orlando pop factory produced some fantastic stuff. But this “comeback” below is giving me a major case of the sads.

First of all, they all look like uncomfortable dads who got dragged to an all-you-can-grab sale at Wilsons Leather. Second, they seem to be making a semi-desperate play for the current vampire saturation in pop culture (also, major shades of the opening club scene in Blade), what with the fangy teeths, red eyes, and Day Walker lore. And third — I don’t know, but their hearts just don’t seem in it.

So yeah, I’m not sure the transition to Backstreet Men is quite a graceful one. But you tell me, readers — especially all you who came out to represent the Boys in our Guilty Pleasures poll –is this the Backstreet evolution you hoped for?

The UK house-music duo Basement Jaxx return with their fifth studio album, Scars, in October.

Following up on first single “Raindrops,” the pair returns with “Feelings Gone,” featuring the vocals of flamboyantly charming and soulful-voiced Australian expat Sam Sparro.

Watch the clip for the song below, where an out-of-this-world Sparro prances around space ,spreading pop joy to the lonely stars in the sky:

An EW Exclusive: Stream three tracks off Rodrigo y Gabriela's '11:11' here!

Rodrigo y Gabriela: Mexican thrash metal acoustic guitar instrumentals, by way of Dublin’s busking scene. If you’ve ever seen this duo live, you know the power of their dual assault — his lightning-fast solos, her wrist-flailing percussive strumming — and you know what it does to a crowd, especially that “Stairway to Heaven” cover. (I put video of that after the jump.)

Their new album, 11:11, is due out next Tuesday. But what’s one of the privileges of having the Music Mix bookmarked? That’s right, class! You get to hear stuff early! (Without breaking the law!) So stream “Hanuman,” “Buster Voodoo,” and the title track below, and then let us know what you think in the comments.

Beatles reissues sold out at Amazon: Are fans screwed?

Tags: , News

For true Beatles obsessives, the Sept. 9 release of all the band’s albums as a lovingly remastered box set is a huge deal. Sure, it’s expensive, but this is arguably music’s greatest catalog, finally brought properly into the CD era, sounding better than ever, with awesome-looking packaging to boot. So I happily went to Amazon.com last week to file my pre-order — only to learn that I was already too late. “We have sold out of our initial allocation of Beatles stereo box sets,” the impassive emporium told me, “but we will be receiving more inventory after release date.” After release date? Are you kidding me, Amazon?! You expect me to spend 9/9/09 sitting around listening to something other than this box set?

Evidently I’m not the only one who’s been plunged into this nightmare. “Hard-core fans are freaking out,” reports Hits Daily Double. Yes! That is exactly what I am doing! And while the stereo box set that I attempted to pre-order will presumably be back in plentiful stock soon (right? right?!), Hits mentions rumors that its mono counterpart might be limited to a mere 10,000 copies made. Oh, the indignity for any mono-loving collector who failed to pre-order promptly.

Until further notice, I’ll be sitting here like a fool, waiting for that email Amazon.com promised to send me once the stereo box set is available again. Has anyone else been put in the same sad situation? How mad are you that you, like me, didn’t remember to pre-order sooner? Argh! (And if you were one of the lucky few who pre-ordered in time, feel free to make me even more miserable by gloating in the comments section below.)

UPDATE: A representative for EMI, which is issuing both box sets, offered a ray of hope when contacted by EW: “EMI is continuing to manufacture and supply retailers with more of these limited-edition [mono] box sets.” And how about the stereo box set? “Yes, additional supply is being manufactured.” The rep could not provide a timetable for when the boxes might be back on sale, but still: Hallelujah!

Lou Barlow, 'Take Advantage' video: An EW exclusive!

Let’s say you are indie-rock hero Lou Barlow. One morning, you walk down to your boiler room-slash-merch cellar, only to find one of your pals cold passed out underneath a pile of old Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, and/or Folk Implosion t-shirts. Do you mock, rob, or otherwise take advantage of this unlucky fellow? No! Instead, you prop him up with a mic and a set of headphones and get him to sing harmony on a gentle acoustic tune, perhaps coincidentally titled “Take Advantage.” Because you are Lou Barlow, and Lou Barlow is an all-around nice guy.

Now that I have spoiled the plot of the first half of Barlow’s new music video for you, take a look below. “Take Advantage” is one of the standouts from his excellent solo album Goodnight Unknown, due Oct. 6. Right now, the Music Mix is the only place where you can watch the video he shot to accompany it. I think it’s a pretty cool song and clip. Check it out and let us know if you agree!

Yo La Tengo, 'When It's Dark': An exclusive Music Mix video premiere

¡Arriba! New Jersey’s beloved alt icons return next Tuesday, September 8, with their 16th album, Popular Songs, on Matador. Guitarist Ira Kaplan, drummer Georgia Hubley and bassist James McNew have now been putting the Yo La in your Tengo for twenty-five years, which means, in etiquette terms, that you owe them at least a sterling gravy boat, or perhaps a nice keychain.

Instead, the band come bearing gifts of their own, in the form of a new video. And while some leaks from Popular — like the fruit-porny “Periodically Double or Triple” — have already hit the interweb, “When It’s Dark,” below, is both unheard and unseen until now. Stream the summer-pastoral clip below:
