All-American Rejects play the Warped Tour 15th anniversary party: An EW exclusive video!

On September 6th, a group of artists gathered in L.A. to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Warped Tour, everyone’s favorite annual experiment in the conflicting relationship between black hoodies and hot asphalt parking lots. Warped vets including blink-182, the Aggrolites, Bad Religion, Ice-T, Katy Perry, NOFX, and Rise Against played a show that both raised money for Musicares and feted the enduring tour, known for its uncompromising conditions, rider-free artist living, and confirmed status as a fertile breeding ground for all things trending in rock/emo/punk. The whole thing was filmed for a one-night-only theatrical release this Thursday, September 17th, at movie theaters around the country — but Music Mix readers can get a preview right now. Check out the All-American Rejects doing “Swing, Swing,” and then let us know in the comments: Will you be heading to the multiplex to see the whole film? Hey, it’s the closest Warped Tour will ever come to being air-conditioned…

Patrick Swayze: What's your favorite musical moment in his movies?

The late, great Patrick Swayze, who passed away yesterday at the age of 57 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, began his career, famously, as a dancer.

But he also managed to score a 1987 pop hit with the ballad “She’s Like the Wind” from Dirty Dancing, and many of his most iconic stage and screen appearances hinged on musical moments, aside from Dirty D‘s multiple song performances — “Love Man,” “Johnny’s Mambo,” “Love Is Strange” (“Sylvia! Yes Mickey? How do you call your lovvvverboy..”) and, of course “I’ve Had the Time of My Life.”

And what girl didn’t ask for a pottery wheel for Christmas after Ghost‘s infamous extracurricular late-night lesson in bowl-making to the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody”?

Over the years, he busted some pretty sweet moves-on-wheels in 1979′s Skatetown U.S.A.seduced Kelly Lynch to Otis Redding’s “These Arms of Mine” in Roadhouse, (alas, this clip is altered for copyright), took it (nearly) all off to Loverboy’s “Working for the Weekend” as a Chippendale-hopeful with Chris Farley on SNL, and even hoofed his way through a West End run of Guys and Dolls in 2006.

But you tell us, readers, what’s your favorite Swayze moment, musically? Watch him pull baby out of the corner one more time, below:

Taylor Swift talks Kanye West on 'The View': 'Cool haircut!'

the-view-taylor-swiftTaylor Swift just appeared on ABC’s The View to talk about her controversial encounter with Kanye West at the MTV Video Music Awards this past Sunday night. So what new angles were the talk show’s hosts able to wring out of this already fairly exhausted story? Well, they had the singer walk them through her thought process in those fateful moments after her Best Female Video VMA win was announced. “Wow, I can’t believe I won,” Swift recalled thinking, followed by, “Oh, Kanye West is here!…Cool haircut!…What are you doing there?!…Ouch.”

The hosts then asked Swift if she would like to meet with West. (Unclear what they think such a meeting would accomplish — maybe he could offer up a third or fourth apology?) “Sure,” she replied, adding that West has not reached out directly to her since the VMAs.

Though Swift remembered feeling “rattled” at the time, she was all smiles this morning. Now that we’ve heard from her, an apologetic Kanye (twice), Jay Leno, and even President Obama, I think it’s time to start asking: Are we ready to move on from this pseudo-scandal yet? Chime in below.

UPDATE: A rep for The View says that Kanye West called their studio to apologize directly to Taylor Swift during her appearance on the show this morning.

Kanye West/Lady Gaga full tour dates announced; poor timing?

After an initial tour-date lineup last week, the full North American Kanye/Gaga schedule for November through January has been announced (see complete list after the jump).

But the better question right now, perhaps, is whether Kanye’s outburst at the VMAs  (you may have heard about it?) will affect fans’ desire to see the hip-hop star on the road.

Watch his widely-discussed mini-breakdown on Jay Leno last night, and tell us, is your desire to see the pair’s Fame Kills tour at all affected by the VMAs fallout? Or altered by his subsequent (and on Leno below, seemingly genuine) mea culpas?

Regina Spektor feat. Joshua Bell, 'The Left Hand Song': A Music Mix exclusive stream

Fans of winsome folkie Regina Spektor may already know the song below; it’s been popping up in her live sets for years (where it’s often referred to as “The Meatball Song” or “‘A Lesson In How Fleeing Preservation Is”), but remains unrecorded — until now.

Now, the track has both an official name, “The Left Hand Song” (being that it was composed using, well, Spektor’s left hand), and an official release — on star violinist Joshua Bell‘s upcoming Sept 29 album At Home With Friends (other “friends” on the disc include Sting, Josh Groban and Kristin Chenowith) Listen below:

What do you think, Music Mixers — how does it compare to the concert version you’re used to?

President Obama calls Kanye West a 'jackass'

The Kanye West/Taylor Swift scandal has now reached the White House. While giving an interview to CNBC today, President Obama reportedly called Kanye West a “jackass” in regard to West’s behavior at the VMAs. ABC reporter Terry Moran overheard this portion of the interview, which was supposed to be off-the-record, and immediately tweeted it. He wrote, “Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a “jackass” for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT’S presidential.”

ABC then issued an apology stating, “In the process of reporting on remarks by President Obama that were made during a CNBC interview, ABC News employees prematurely tweeted a portion of those remarks that turned out to be from an off-the-record portion of the interview. This was done before our editorial process had been completed. That was wrong. We apologize to the White House and CNBC and are taking steps to ensure that it will not happen again.”

What do you think Music Mix-ers? Has the Kanye backlash gone too far? Or is he getting what he deserved?

Kanye West on Leno: Did Jay go too far?

Categories: Kanye West

Kanye West just offered a pretty heartfelt apology on Leno‘s kickoff episode tonight, before joining Jay-Z and Rihanna for a phenomenal run through Jay-Z’s recent single “Run This Town.” During the brief interview segment, Leno asked West what the rapper’s late mother would have said about the Taylor Swift incident, eliciting a long, emotional, and excruciatingly awkward pause. I can’t defend Kanye’s awful behavior at the VMAs, but it seemed like a bit of a low blow, especially coming from nice-guy Jay Leno.

What did you think? Did Kanye deserve that kind of grilling, or is bringing up his mother a bit unfair?

All Tomorrow's Parties Rocks the Catskills

The roving international event All Tomorrow’s Parties took place Sept 11-13 in the Catskill Mountains, and it was essentially a perfect weekend. Curated by The Flaming Lips and nestled within The Shining-esque Kutshers Country Club in Monticello, the event, featuring the likes of Animal Collective, Sufjan Stevens, Nick Cave and of course the Lips themselves, provided one mesmerizing set after another. Below, a few highlights:

Nick Cave made a surprise appearance Friday night by joining the Dirty Three (whose Warren Ellis is a member of his Bad Seeds) and apparently he also gave a hotel-room performance to six incredibly lucky fans the next day.

Saturday officially began with indie-pop maestro Sufjan Stevens, who went easy on audiences by playing his gentle Seven Swans album from start-to-finish, because he said it worked well as “an early-afternoon hangover special.”

Black Dice, who followed a few hours later, were markedly less considerate toward anyone with a headache. Its three members embarked upon a 45-minute electronic noise freakout, playing so loud you could actually feel the bass vibrating the tips of your eyelashes. When a sampled guitar riff made an appearance during their set, it was almost sad to be torn from their absorbing underworld and reminded that structured music exists.

Saturday found Bradford Cox pulling double duties, performing first solo as Atlas Sound and then later with his group Deerhunter. The Atlas Sound set was a disappointment—he spent as much time fussing over tech issues (he joked he was worried his guitar sounded too close to Dave Matthews) as he did playing songs.

Kanye West apologizes to Taylor Swift, again: 'I feel like Ben Stiller in "Meet the Parents"'

Categories: Kanye West, Taylor Swift

It’s deja vu all over again for Kanye West, who has just apologized a second time for interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards. Perhaps sensing that his first, all-caps apology didn’t go over well in all quarters, the star stuck to a few brief, conventionally capitalized sentences this time. “I feel like Ben Stiller in Meet the Parents when he messed up everything and Robert De Niro asked him to leave,” West wrote on his official blog. “That was Taylor’s moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry.”

Now that’s an apology. What do you say? Is Kanye’s latest “sorry” enough, or do you want another round? If nothing else, I hope we can all agree that Meet the Parents is a hilarious movie.
