Another day, another Billboard record smooshed by the Black Eyed Peas. This week, the BEPs’ “I Gotta Feeling” has matched Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” for longest No. 1 stay this decade (Mimi’s 2005 smash spent 14 non-consecutive weeks on the charts).
If you’re keeping track at home, that’s 26 weeks straight at No. 1 including “Boom Boom Pow”‘s 12-week run, making them the second act ever in the 51-year history of the Hot 100 to remain at No. 1 for more than six months in a one-year period.
Usher, the other member of their Very Special Persons’ Club, achieved his record in a more diffuse, if not equally impressive way, spending 28 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 in 2004 with four songs (“Yeah!,” “Burn,” “Confessions Part II,” and the Alicia Keys duet “My Boo”).
If they do break the record next week — which looks likely — 2009 will officially be the Year of the Pea. And this is, of course, only the second track to be released from their June album, The E.N.D. Which song would you choose for the next single: “Meet Me Halfway”? “Imma Be”?
Or do you wish that all this too, would Boom Boom Pass?

I don’t listen to the radio, so I am not sick of the song, but I would rather have “Imma Be” as the next single.
“Imma Be”, definitely….
gross
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
i thought ‘imma be’ was released and failed big time (like it should have). Meet Me Halfway is a good single
Why is this song still number one? With new tracks by Madonna, Britney, Mariah, Janet, Whitney, Alicia Keys, paleeze.
@ Mary – I’m pretty sure you answered your own question. Well as far as POP music goes.
“Missing You” deserves to be a single. NOW!
They’ve already selected “Meet Me Halfway” and it’s already flying up the charts.
I love the Black Eyed Peas, but The E.N.D. is their worst album. I’m really not a fan of it. Even the songs I liked at first (which were very few) I have since gotten sick of after just a handful of listens. I was very much looking forward to this album before its release, but it was definitely the biggest musical disappointment of the year.
Meet Me Halfway debuted at #75 on the Billboard Hot 100. It jumped to #47 in its second week. The reason the Black Eyed Peas are breaking all kinds of records is that people all over the World love to listen to them. For those who don’t like their music – well this is decmocracy, nobody is forcing you to listen. Turn off the switch!
They should definitely release “Imma Be” next. That’s a hot track.
Just remarkable that Black Eyed Peas have had 26 consecutive weeks with two #1 hit singles off their new album! I’m noticing that I Gotta Feeling is cooling down a bit on the radio stations, so its reign will end soon. They know how to make solid records. Will.i.am is just superb with the music he makes for the group. There hasn’t been a song that has dethroned it yet, not even the Pitbull hit, not even Mariah Carey’s single, not even Miley Cyrus’ Party in the U.S.A. Those singles have peaked at 2 and 3. Those songs on their album are good, but I love Showdown the most and it should be the next single or the fourth or fifth! It has that stadium sounding feel and big beats and grooves that will rock airwaves everywhere! Anything on their album has a chance to be a hit!
I remember Usher’s 28-week reign in 2004 with his 4 consecutive Number One hits! Just remarkable songs with multi-format success! It’s something that his follow up album, 2008′s ballad heavy Here I Stand, never accomplished. It’s hard to follow up a huge selling album like his Confessions did. I think that Black Eyed Peas might do it with later singles but not at the pace of Usher. There are other artists that want to take the top spot now.
Well, the BEP have finally been knocked off their perch. BTW Preston, Usher’s record is 28 weeks over a one calander year period. It was done with 4 NON-CONSECUTIVE #1s. If Meet Me Halfway, which has climbed to #32 this week, makes it to #1 the BEP may have a crack at breaking that record too.
Good day! I just wish to give a huge thumbs up for the good data you could have right here on this post. I will be coming again to music-mix.ew.com for more soon.
