Vampire Weekend give away new song 'Horchata' as free download

Vampire Weekend will reward patient fans with a new record at last on Jan. 12, 2010, almost two years to the day since their self-titled debut arrived and lit the indie world afire. Those who can’t wait that long can head right now to the band’s official site, where they’re giving away the first track from Contra as a free MP3 download. Huzzah for “Horchata”!

It’s a fun little tune, this “Horchata,” with some cool percussive polyrhythms built into a bleep-bloopy laptop backdrop that reminds me of VW side project Discovery. This must be part of what frontman Ezra Koenig was talking about this spring when he told me the band’s next album would feature “new sounds.” Lyrics-wise, “Horchata” features all the abstruse allusions you’d expect from a Vampire Weekend song, rhyming the titular beverage with such useful Scrabble words as balaclava, Aranciata, and Masada.

I think that places “Horchata” without a doubt in my personal all-time top five songs about woolly headgear, tasty thirst-quenchers, and Israeli landmarks. How about you? Download the song from vampireweekend.com and report back.

GREAT song. Finally EW covers something of worth that doesn’t involve Lady Gaga or vampires.
