Jay Sean's 'Down' dethrones the Black Eyed Peas at last on the singles chart

And they said it couldn’t be done! The Black Eyed Peas’ record-breaking 26-week consecutive stay at the top of Billboard‘s Hot 100 singles chart — first with “Boom Boom Pow,” then with “I Gotta Feeling” — has come to an end at last. Say hello to the new No. 1 song in the country: Jay Sean’s “Down.”

The British singer‘s dance-pop single, which features a guest shot from his Cash Money labelmate Lil Wayne, has been climbing the charts since this summer, but I never expected it could pull this off. Hey, after the year they’ve had, I’m not sure I expected anyone to dethrone the Peas, ever.

Did you? What do you think of “Down,” anyway? Would you say it deserves to replace “Boom Boom Pow”/”I Gotta Feeling” as the biggest Auto-Tune jam of the moment? Check out Jay Sean’s smash after the jump to refresh your memory, then let us know.

AWFUL! Not that BEP is good. This sounds like our Canadian crap, like Sean Desmond etc… Also is there anything Lil Wayne won’t whore himself on, he is shameful gross, and needs to come out of his closet already!

I am a little disappointed that the Black Eyed peas are so successful with this autotune crap. I meani Like the Black Eyed PEas but they don’t need to put autotune on Fergie’s voice. She is an amazing singer. I felt when i heard the album that they are just following a fad. And a lame fad at that. But now that it is so successful they are probably going to do it every album. Why is the autotuner so successful. Don’t we want to hear singers not people singing into machines? Pop music sucks. I’ll stick with Rock

I’ve not really been a fan of Jay Sean and his music over the years (he’s been around a while in Eng), but at the same time, as Brit Asian, I can’t help but feel pleased for him :) esp as the American market is so hard to crack for British Artists, this is quite an achievement and hopefully his success continues..talking of which, maybe this is a good time for Anoop Desai to come out with something :D

I like the new crop of Asian pop singers breaking with US releases this year. BoA’s album is good, very close to Britney Spears’ dance pop sound. Jay Sean has a solid single that hit No.1. They tend to go with US producers like Sean Garrett, Brian Kennedy, Christopher Stewart, Rodney Jerkins and others, yet actually pull it off on the songs. They’re going for that same kind of pop sound, yet have their own thing.

I love Black Eyed Peas, but I was hoping for another song to dethrone I Gotta Feeling at No. 1 and it was Jay Sean. But I noticed that BEP’s Feeling was playing a little less in early October and Sean’s song was playing more, so that led his song to reach the top. It has an Akon-kind of groove, but it fits for Jay. But remarkable that Black Eyed Peas stayed at No. 1 for 26 weeks! It’s about strong songmaking that kept their 2 songs at No. 1. And as for Auto-Tuned songs–I like them if you’re creative with the songs. Radio programmers like the convenience of the effect on pop songs.
