Radiohead 'definitely' planning new album in 2010, says guitarist

Here are six words to warm any Radiohead fan’s heart: “WE WILL BE MAKING AN ALBUM!” That’s what guitarist Ed O’Brien seems to have told (or shouted at) the NME, according to an interview in the latest issue of the U.K. magazine. Of course, we’ve known for some time that the band has been busy in the studio this year. It’s still very nice to get such direct new confirmation, especially after a widely-circulated interview with The Believer this summer in which frontman Thom Yorke appeared to be implying that the band might stick to one-off singles and such from now on.

O’Brien assures the NME that Yorke was “misquoted,” promising that the studio sessions Radiohead has booked for this winter will “definitely” lead to a full-length physical album in 2010. Hallelujah! In fact, he goes on at some length about how much he and the other band members love the tangible artwork that comes with vinyl and CDs. Given the gorgeous packaging that has accompanied each of Radiohead’s releases for the past decade and a half, I can’t say that’s a shock.

Is it too early to start speculating about what Radiohead’s LP8 might sound like? O’Brien tells the NME that this summer’s free single “These Are My Twisted Words” isn’t necessarily an indicator, which is too bad since I really love that song. Clearly Radiohead’s creative juices are flowing right now, though — just look at all the fantastic new material Yorke played at his recent solo shows. I trust them to come up with something mind-blowing once they get back into the studio.

So, are you looking forward to Radiohead’s next album as much as I am? What direction do you hope they’ll take? I’ve reached out to Radiohead’s camp for any more information they can provide, and I’ll update you if I hear anything. In the meantime, chime in below.

As long as the Best Band of the Decade makes another album as good as “Kid A”, “Hail To The Thief” or “In Rainbows”, it should be amazing.

  • Soulman1057

The best news I’ve heard all year. These guys don’t produce a bad album. In fact every album seems to improve upon the last. In Rainbows has become one of my favorite albums ever. Bring on more Radiohead!

  • couchgrouch

thanks for the warning…I’ll be sure and carry some No-Doz in case I hear one of their aural sedatives while driving.

  • crispy

In Rainbows was mind-numbingly boring. The most exciting thing about it was the distribution model.

    • Eba Kay

Hey, no offense, but I disagree. Not that I’m trying to correct you, your musical taste is your own to have, but I’d like to express mine as well.
In my mind, In Rainbows is perhaps Radiohead’s best. Unbelievably moving and in depth music. Not easy at first, but it grows on you like cancer (-:
Have a good one crispy (-:

Simon is my new go to for Radiohead/Thom Yorke info. HA. I cannot wait! I love them so much.

  • God

I like everything they have released. That being said, I hope they go back to being less frenetic, like The Bends or OK Computer. I listen to those albums in their entirety. It would be refreshing for them to release an album where you don’t want to skip a track.

  • Patrick Calsetta

I couldn’t be more excited for it.

  • S.O.

Any release by Radiohead is GREAT news. Who cares what it could possibly sound like, I can trust these guys to make a great effort. Even it was an all Reggae sounding album, I would go for it.

  • Kalie

Fantastic news! I’m obsessed with “In Rainbows”.

  • Me

Wrong. Ed is the new lead singer for Radiohead with Brian Eno as producer. Thom and Nigel and run off with Flea to form that other band.

    • Mike T

good thing there are artists like Taylor Swift and Daughtry out there for you…might be a good fit for your own shallowness

  • Samantha Delynne

I like their 1993 song Creep.Thats the only song I like by Radiohead.I dont care for their new songs.

    • Curley

      You suck, Samantha.

    • alex

      thats kinda ignorant Samantha
considering they have released near enough 200 songs

Creep being the bands’ least favorite performance piece now..

The band are so diverse that their sound has changed dramatically through each and every album.

Which is personally why i can really listen to them as often as i do lol (it’s kinda bizarre).

Anyway my point is, that although there are a couple of iffy tracks they have released, to say that you only like one song that the band has ever written is just stupid, and begs for someone to take you down for it.

But to be honest you’re obviously not a fan and i don’t suppose a random-er is really going to change your mind.
So don’t go looking for articles on bands you don’t really like just to point out your retarded opinions…

      Peace =]

      • Eba Kay

He he he…. You da man Alex!

  • jen

I don’t care about you Samantha lol.I’m glad their back at making music! Hope they never stop!

  • TT

I’m going to play devil’s advocate. Maybe NME is mis quoting ED? NME is not always a reliable publication. And ED doesn’t always know what he’s talking about. He didn’t even know that EMI was re-releasing Radiohead LPs.

  • Dilbo Fagginz

“I like their 1993 song Creep.Thats the only song I like by Radiohead.I dont care for their new songs.”

    LOL! Fantastic quote!

No doubt you love the pop ditty like a good bird.

Can’t wait for whatever strangeness the lads have in store/

  • Brandon

I hope that Ed us not being misquoted and if it comes out later that they AREN’T planning a new album then I may just lose it completely! I am going to believe it because it makes fricken sense. They love the album format, they love the album art and so I am taking this as real. Thom better not change his mind!!!!!!I may have to quit them. Nevermind. I can’t quit Radiohead.
